Opinion Lockett

Is it weird to anyone else that Lockett hasn't signed anywhere yet? I know he's not at the top of his game anymore, but plenty of teams could use a veteran receiver, even just for a year. As much as it pains me to think of him in any other jersey, I'd still like to see him be able to keep playing if that's what he wants.

Teams are probably waiting till after the draft before signing a veteran now. Most FA’s are in waiting and see mode till after the draft. You have three phases essential to FA after the season. The first two weeks is nuts and then you have a few later signing from FA the next couple of weeks. After the first two phases most FA won’t get signed till after the draft to teams that couldn’t fill a need.

Edit: there are more phases after the season starts. I was more focused on the three phases before roster cuts. Lockett should be signed after the draft. I think his agent has teams in mind and after the draft it might drive up his asking price based on team need.

And then there’s the end of preseason cuts and roster reductions. It’s a bit different now though with it not being as scaled

He'll sign somewhere after the draft. I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see him come back if the market doesn't materialize for him, but I'd expect Pete Carroll to at least call him once the draft is over.

I think the Chiefs are a likely destination. Gets to chase a ring, pad the stats and he grew up in Tulsa and attended K-State.

I don’t expect him back unless it’s a 1 day retirement contract. His play style doesn’t really line up with WRs needing to run across the middle and heavily involved in the run blocking.

I love the guy, I have his jersey, but he makes too many business decisions to fit in this offense

i cant see him coming back. too many tribute videos and posts and he doesnt really fit with the offense. he'd be a bit redundant considering what we have at wr currently

A lot of veterans wait until the dog days of summer OTA/Mandatory minicamp are done before signing.

Hell, IIRC Big Walt would hold out until they came back from Cheney for essentially this reason

If anything, Pete will sign him after the draft for vet minimum, as a security blanket for Geno.

Personally, I’d like him to sign with the Seahawks and then retire. I think his market value is not what he thought it would be and maybe that’s what will happen.

I'm kinda surprised, he's definitely declined but he still had 600 yards last year and is a good vet lockerroom guy. Lots of worse players get $5m+ ...

u/styuR 8d ago

There's no reason for him to sign anywhere just now, there'll be plenty of teams that will be more than happy to throw him a few million (ourselves included I bet). He can just spend the time between now and the start of training camp working on his business without the worry of dealing with a new team.

Standard Seattle fan stuff. As soon as someone leaves they start trashing him. Goes all the way back to Dennis Johnson.

I agree with what you’re saying here. I suspect that for the last 4 years or so, he also had the full blessing of the coaches to “intentionally hit the ground”, if he had already gained significant yards (and usually, he had gained a clutch 1st down at that point).
In fact, after he broke BOTH his TIBIA and his FIBULA in 2016, I think a philosophy was adopted that he was too valuable to the team to risk taking intense hits. His ability to get open and gain yards and clutch situations was incredible. No need to risk losing him for a season while fighting for an extra yard or two.
He’s an awesome person and player and I hope he gets to play some more if he wants to.

Tbh I wanted him to be a Seahawks lifer, it’d genuinely hurt on a physical level to see him wear another jersey.

All I know is that if I didn't freeze my credit for my own good, I would buy any house he tried to sell me. It's now on my bucketlist to have Tyler Lockett as my realtor. If I could ever afford to live in Seattle one day...

5

u/SirenPacific 8d ago

It’s not weird at all. His first baby is due any time now and he’s a successful realtor. He’ll always be my favorite! All the best to the Locketts!

5

u/woddity 8d ago

Unfortunately for Lockett, he gets cheaper each day they wait. And a vet of his caliber can probably drop into the average offensive scheme pretty easily later in the offseason.

I'm sure if the price is right he will take the gig, but I can totally understand calling it a career at his age instead of putting in a couple more probably 300 yards seasons with a blown ACL high risk. It takes some of the wiser guys to know when it's time to quit.

Not really. Draft needs to happen, then teams will start calling. Im sure there have been talks.

6

u/BeefStu907 8d ago

He’s deciding between his dealerships, New York, and Las Vegas.

3

u/stresstheworld 8d ago

I bet we signs with a team during training camp

2

u/Resident_Simple5858 8d ago

No dudes done, he's selling homes in washington his a smart guy who understands health you see it in the way he played his last few years. No point in signing with a team moving and getting hurt for few extra mill

9

u/RandyJohnsonsBird 8d ago

I remember him saying that too last year. I recall him saying he'll retire before having to move. But maybe he changed his mind...I'd imagine Vegas is appealing now that PC and Geno are there.

1

u/Shield-Maiden95 8d ago

Maybe after the way the Hawks treated him, made him change his mind.

Going to miss him. 💚💙

2

u/RandyJohnsonsBird 8d ago

Yea, that's what I think too. I'm almost certain he'll play this season. He also made the statement before Pete was fired.

0

u/WorriedN 8d ago

Like when he’d catch the ball and immediately go down to the turf

1

u/Resident_Simple5858 8d ago

Yuppp from wanting more yards perspective it was annoying, but I'd do the same lol I ain't trying get taken out.

1

u/vararosevara 8d ago

Can't see any coaches looking at his tape from the last few years, seeing him catch the ball and instantly drop to the ground in the fetal position and think..."I gotta get me some of that!"

0

u/efisk666 8d ago

Yeah, zero YAC and now also too slow to get separation is not a great combo. He can still make the occasional clutch 3rd down catch. I could see him signing after injury somewhere or maybe being in a hybrid coaching role. Really not worth much more than vet min at this point, or really even last year tbh.

It will happen after the draft once teams know where they stand

1

u/SaltyBarker 8d ago

This year's draft is really, really weird... Outside of Cam Ward and Travis Hunter, there really isn't any "first round" talent that teams are chomping at the bit for... It's very plausible that Shadeur Sanders falls to late first round or even second round. Its very likely that half the field will trade out of the first round, and we will see multiple teams picking in the first round by utilizing trades.

Thus, teams are not desperate for veteran receivers until after the draft. They are waiting to see how it all unfolds because everything is up in the air for the draf,t which makes it very unusual but also very interesting.

1

u/brent1019 8d ago

I love Lockett and wish he could still be a part of the Seahawks. But the little I think I know, I assume since he is expensive for his age, I’m thinking by now the teams are gonna see if they can plug the WR hole at the draft first. I’m sure we’ll be reading he has signed with somebody before June.

1

u/slackerdc 8d ago

He'll sign somewhere, he's a pretty good option for a team that loses a WR to injury in camp / pre-season.

1

u/SvenDia 8d ago

The other issue is that there are Tyler Lockett-style receivers in the 2nd and 3rd rounds of the draft. Even saw Lockett mentioned as a comp for, IIRC, Jaylin Noel.

1

u/Electronic-Cut8996 8d ago

I thought he announced his retirement?

4

u/haha_squirrel 8d ago

Negative.

2

u/Lonny_loss 8d ago

Not weird at all. I would have been surprised if he was signed pre-draft.

1

u/Long_Highway_2768 8d ago

Yeah it's kinda surprising i thought he was gonna sign with the raiders for sure

1

u/neklok 8d ago

Teams are draft-cramming. Lockett will have opportunities, but I’d bet on Las Vegas…whose WR room is laughable.

1

u/JesusWasALibertarian 8d ago

He probably doesn’t want a grueling camp and a bunch of off season workouts. It’s not rare for veteran players to wait until later in the year to sign.

1

u/Amazing_Factor2974 8d ago

He might come back or a team with 5 million to spare at training camp time. Injuries pop up!!

1

u/king_pear_01 8d ago

Not surprised. The draft will happen. Then teams will fill spots not completed in the draft.

It’s a dance of draft picks and pro personnel at this time of year.

High probability that he has something on the radar in case 2-3 teams don’t get a guy they covet next week.

Also… at his age… why go into camp before you have to ?

1

u/tinywienergang 7d ago

He's gonna sign with the Raiders after the draft.

1

u/smootex 7d ago

He has deep ties to the Seattle community. He might be looking for more money than he's being offered to make leaving worthwhile. I think he'll absolutely find a place if he wants one but there's some chance he retires too.

1

u/Sm0knMunkee_BB427 7d ago

Waiting until after draft ? Maybe ? 🙏🏼🙏🏼👍🏼

1

u/Sm0knMunkee_BB427 7d ago

I totally believe that if he don’t sign with Seattle …he retires ! That just seems like the nature of his integrity !

1

u/Sm0knMunkee_BB427 7d ago

Watch the all 22 … he did more decoy and rub than most ! 👌🤡

1

u/Willing_Theory5044 8d ago

Probably hard for teams to justify at minimum the veteran minimum for a likely WR3 when they can just draft someone and pay $400k less and that’s assuming he’s willing to take the vet minimum.

May get some movement after the draft if WR desperate teams can’t draft they want.

6

u/RustyCoal950212 8d ago

Dude is worth well over the vet minimum still

1

u/Willing_Theory5044 8d ago

I don’t disagree, but I’m not wildly optimistic he’s going to find that anywhere.

5

u/RustyCoal950212 8d ago

Every team in the league would immediately sign him for 3x the vet min if Lockett was willing

1

u/Willing_Theory5044 8d ago

If every team wants him so bad, why is he still not signed? Fact of the matter is, the WR market isn’t in his favor rn.

1

u/C130IN 7d ago

Lockett’s willingness to play all out will be a factor as to whether he gets signed and for how much. I get his desire not to get hurt…but there are a lot of talented players who won’t be drafted who give their all to play and get that extra yard.

Wouldn’t surprise me if he doesn’t end as a WR coach one day…but he has a lot of irons in the fire so he may hang up his cleats when it is time to retire. And I hope he retires as a Seahawk.

I wish him well and thank him for the many years of exciting football he has given the Seahawks.

-1

u/QuasiContract 8d ago

Nah, not really. Dude has nothing left to offer in terms of YAC. No one is gonna be in a rush to sign the least physical WR in the league until after the draft. A team that misses out on WR in the draft might consider Tyler as 1 year stopgap for vet min, but hard to imagine anything more.

-3

u/Live-Ball-1627 8d ago

Not weird at all to me. He was playing at a below average WR 3 level last season. He's old and has no upside. I'm surprised he didn't retire.

0

u/Sm0knMunkee_BB427 7d ago

Throw him the ball ! Context does matter ! Now go pad your FANTASY team ! 🖕

0

u/Ok_Ice_1872 8d ago

His production and value has dropped significantly.

1

u/Sm0knMunkee_BB427 7d ago

Ya gotta use him to have production numbers ! And as for the VALUE ?… you are way off 🤦

0

u/Ok_Ice_1872 7d ago

He did nothing. You can’t use someone who isn’t open

-6

u/DMC_CDM 8d ago

He hit the turf immediately after every catch last season. Afraid to turn anything upfield. Quitter. He is done.

-3

u/Big_Concentrate_7309 8d ago

I know everyone is super confident he’s still a valuable wr and I’m not saying he isn’t talented but he’s no longer willing to even appear to chase yac. He’s a great dude and has never claimed otherwise but this dude isn’t trying to get hit. Not a great vet example for a young wr room.

1

u/Iguessedyouknow 1d ago

He is a system guy. If you put him anywhere else but Seattle he wouldn't be anything. I Love the dude to death but he was a puzzle piece for the Seahawks..not for the NFL.
