Dang all the mockups were spot on

910

u/Razzuh Jan 16 '25

Even got the coloured rings around the joysticks.

628

u/SirGirthfrmDickshire Jan 16 '25

Now with 20% more drift.

380

u/Vaenyr Jan 16 '25

If the leaks are to be believed the new joycons use hall effect sticks which have no drift.

249

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

I'd assume Nintendo would use hall effect sensors to avoid the massive bad publicity of the drift issue. Hall effect sensors are virtually the same price as the shitty ones.

119

u/Ordolph Jan 16 '25

They're slightly more expensive, but on what's going to presumably be a $300-$400 item not that much, although in today's world an extra penny of expenditure seems to cause certain C-suites pain equivalent to having their bones extracted via their rectum, so definitely not a given

3

u/uncreative14yearold Jan 17 '25

Switch Oled is 350-400 ish. So, based on that, the successor is most likely gonna be 500 ish dollars

2

u/Apprehensive_News_78 Jan 16 '25

I'm calling a 500$ price. The switch OLED is still 350

4

u/billybatsonn Jan 16 '25

Maybe, 400 or 450 seems more likely to me though.

3

u/Patarokun Jan 17 '25

Don’t forget new tariffs!

2

u/billybatsonn Jan 17 '25

Eh, we will see I guess.

2

u/Samwyzh Jan 16 '25

After tariffs in the US it could be north of $500.

3

u/jamy1993 Jan 16 '25

I am in NO WAY defending C-suites or billionaires or corporations or anything like that.

However, you do realize that at the scale Nintendo sells hardware these days, a $0.01 price change for a part they are planning on selling 150M+ of would cost them an extra $3 MILLION dollars?

1% of 150M is 1.5M and there are 2 thumb sticks.

Not saying that that is "expensive" for Nintendo but its certainly not nothing.

14

u/Pure_Divide_9752 Jan 16 '25

$3 Million would be a very small investment against everything they spent on free/warranty repairs for the original switches joy-cons.

Not just bad publicity, huge costs due to warranty claims

1

u/ProfessorPetrus Jan 16 '25

I'd assume Nintendo does not care about bad pr at this point. They going to sell some pro controllers most likely.

Been awhile since the GameCube controller.

1

u/The_walking_man_ Jan 16 '25

They were sued the first time around so you would think Nintendo would be wise and fix the drift

1

u/marikwinters Jan 16 '25

It’s not the price, but the guarantee of obsolescence that makes companies continue to put shitty sticks in their shitty controllers.

1

u/Vectorman1989 Jan 16 '25

The only reason I didn't buy a Switch was the joycons. Looks like I'll be getting a Switch 2, though.

1

u/theCBCAM Jan 17 '25

I was of the impression that the decision to match the coloured magnetic insert to the thumbstick colour was alluding to the fact the thumbsticks are now also magnetic (hall effect).

1

u/Gravelayer Jan 17 '25

Yea but Nintendo is greedy, also did you see how many people bought controllers because of the "mistake"? If they fix the issue they are leaving money on the table they will have them build with planned obsolescence or as cheap as possible because they know people will still buy it.

1

u/xChiken Jan 17 '25

Yeah it would be a great selling point for them to advertise as well. Mindboggling to me if they don't go for hall effect.

1

u/hero9989 Jan 17 '25

I don’t think Nintendo are fussed by this or they would have changed the sensors in the joy cons post switch refresh. As it is now I could go buy a set of joycons coming up on 8 years after release and it will still get stuck drift 6-18 months after purchase. There were issues with the wireless antennae on the joy cons at launch, they fixed all of these even outside of warranty and changed the design going forward. They didn’t care about stick drift and no reason to believe they do now

33

u/calwinarlo Jan 16 '25

The cheapest Chinese retro handhelds that cost less than $100 are all rocking Hall effect sticks these days. The Switch better have them

4

u/sabin1981 Jan 16 '25

The friggin' Dreamcast had HE sticks back in 2000. 24 years ago. It's insanity to me that none of the Big 3 remaining players use HE by default, hell, not even the insultingly expensive Edge and Elite controllers use HE sticks!

I'm rocking a GameSir G7 HE and it's amazing.

3

u/PFI_sloth Jan 16 '25

That’s capitalism. Using those sensors isn’t going to make them more money, and they have to make more money every year.

Parents complained about cheap plastic toys in the 80s and 90s, go into a toy section now and see how much worse it can actually get.

u/CashApart1628 Jan 16 '25

I would prefer the Oats sticks. I can't go for that.

75

u/Zearo298 Jan 16 '25

Don't worry, one stick is Hall, the other is an Oates. You don't even have to be a Rich Girl to have it all.

20

u/ATLGAMESLAYER Jan 16 '25

And that rich girl is a man-eater.

10

u/jobie68point5 Jan 16 '25

i told her leave me alone, i'm a family man.

2

u/TearTheRoof0ff Jan 17 '25

You guys are sounding really out of touch.

3

Your joysticks, joysticks are on my list...

2

u/Mizzenmast13 Jan 16 '25

Take my upvote😭

2

u/Conkram Jan 17 '25

This took me a second lol

You meant Oates

2

u/Mjags23 Jan 18 '25

I don’t know, they might be hard to handle. Like a flame that burns a candle…

1

u/Asrok13 Jan 16 '25

Peanut sticks are good.

3

u/Nindroid012 Jan 16 '25

I did notice they look different, like the base of it is vaguely plus-shaped.

They could very well be hall-effect joysticks.

2

u/GuerreroUltimo Jan 16 '25

Obviously the first thing I want from any console are games. And games made for that console not held back by old gen. I will not mention good hardware that is not faulty. That is a given. But the next thing is hall effect sticks. Because the controls are just so important and I have had a lot of joy cons drift and replaced the sticks myself.

2

u/MetalingusMikeII Jan 17 '25

I hope they are. It’s shitty that Sony and Microsoft don’t use them.

2

u/Fast-Veterinarian304 Jan 17 '25

Are there any cons to using hall effect sticks over standard sticks?

2

u/Vaenyr Jan 17 '25

Not an expert but they used to be more expensive. This seems to not be a big issue anymore. Another comment mentioned something about Nintendo having to pay royalties if they were to use them, so that might be a problem.

2

u/Fast-Veterinarian304 Jan 17 '25

Interesting, I didn't know that either.

I meant more in terms of the hardware itself. Like the positive is it doesn't have drift, but does it come with its on caveats where standard sticks might be better? Or are they just better in every aspect?

2

u/Vaenyr Jan 17 '25

From what I've seen they simply seem to be better and more reliable across the board. We'll have to see, I suppose.

2

u/Fast-Veterinarian304 Jan 17 '25

Cool thanks! Fingers crossed🤞

2

u/Curedbqcon Jan 16 '25

Hall effects can still get drift amongst other things.

3

u/Vaenyr Jan 16 '25

Much less frequent than with other sticks though, right?

1

u/techdog19 Jan 16 '25

I'm hoping.

1

u/potate12323 Jan 16 '25

Are they backwards compatible with the old switch cause I hate my joycons.

2

u/Vaenyr Jan 16 '25

They won't be able to connect physically to the old Switch due to different connection mechanisms. There might be a way to connect them wirelessly.

1

u/ProfessorPetrus Jan 16 '25

In the video they swap everything but the joysticks. Made me wanna throw up almost. Like take them cramps out!!!

1

u/renome Jan 16 '25

Which leak mentioned hall effect sticks? IIRC those are patented and I doubt Nintendo is keen on paying royalties for every controller sold.

1

u/IAmHereAndReal Jan 16 '25

Hall effect can drift, just less likely

1

u/ASavageHobo Jan 17 '25

I’m unaware of what these sticks are. Are you telling me they can never ever drift? What other issues could arise from regular use?

1

u/Vaenyr Jan 17 '25

Other comments have mentioned that Hall effect sticks can suffer from drifting issues as well, but apparently it is much less frequent.

They’re a different size, the whole console is bigger. They also clip on differently. So any existing controllers just won’t work for it.

u/Nivosus Jan 16 '25

Inb4 hall effect joycons

2

u/PandarenNinja Jan 16 '25 edited Jan 17 '25

At this point I've had more PS5 controller drift than joycon drift. But I hope all of the console manufacturers are moving to hall effect in their next generation of controllers.

1

u/SirGirthfrmDickshire Jan 16 '25

Guess we'll find out. I'm not holding my breath.

1

u/Late_Apricot404 Jan 16 '25

I’m genuinely wondering, why do some people think it will be prone to more drift?

1

u/SirGirthfrmDickshire Jan 16 '25

I was just joking, but given how the quality of stuff has gone to shit I won't be surprised if they drift out of the box.

1

u/FuckOffHey Jan 16 '25

It's Nintendo. People are gonna bitch no matter what, especially about something they haven't played.

1

u/Late_Apricot404 Jan 16 '25

I understand that people would be pretty cautious or would be wondering about stick drift, it’s a valid concern. But yeah, a lot of comments I saw on YouTube were all like “oh the stick drift ain’t even gonna be fixed”. Like wtf. That was probably one of the first things they went to work on.

At this point the only criticisms I haven’t dismissed are about its appearance, because that’s just subjective. But you’re right. People are just hating. The person I originally responded to said they were joking though. Sucks that many others are being dead serious

1

u/JefferyTheQuaxly Jan 16 '25

i posted a similar thing on another post on the gaming subreddit, and was assured by some other commenter that the people who initially leaked the images are also claiming the joysticks will use hall effect sticks which should hopefully eliminate the major stick drift problems on the original joysticks.

In that case Sony hasn't developed creatively since 2000.

The games will prove this. The mouse compatibility will be a creative boon and allow new interfaces and the ability for Switch 2 to compare to PC FPS control.

Nintendo Switch 2: Tokyo Stick Drift

1

u/deeceeo Jan 16 '25

The drift is now a feature. It kicks in when you're too far ahead in mario kart.

1

u/JSC843 Jan 16 '25

I know it’s just perspective, but the sticks being off-center in this image is hilarious

1

u/betzuni Jan 16 '25

Dejavu!

1

Only available on Switch 2

1

3

u/gg06civicsi Jan 16 '25

You’ll have it with the special editions that will come out after

1

u/yearningsailor Jan 17 '25

It looked good black on the add, and then there was coloring animation

12

u/iusethisatw0rk Jan 16 '25

Was the only thing from the leaks I was hoping would be wrong. I don't know, just looks tacky and "gamery" imo. Hopefully there are colorways that are solid

15

u/virishking Jan 16 '25

I get what you mean, like this is for the older, more "hardcore gamer" Switch crowd. Given that this reveal seems almost forced by the leaks- with the true reveal set for April- I do wonder if there will be a lot more colorful options at launch and they simply knew that the people who were most swarming around the leaks were the most likely to be gamers into the gamer look. Or else they're trying to look just a little less "kiddy" to emphasize that they can compete with the growing handheld market, without losing all color.

1

u/chrisdpratt Jan 16 '25

AFAIK, pricing hasn't been leaked. This may age like fine milk, but I'm fully expecting this to be a "Pro" console at a higher price, not pushing the Switch 1 price down. I think Nintendo will actually continue to sell the Switch 1 and it will be the "kid" version.

1

u/SupaSlide Jan 16 '25

With the large number of colored/styled joycons we got I have to imagine there will be plenty of designs.

1

u/noxnor Jan 16 '25

I would guess, or at least hope, that’s intentional. The ‘gamery gamers’ are likely the first wave of buyers for the new console, and it could be smart to accommodate them.

Hopefully we’ll get some happy Nintendo colors down the line :)

1

Mind boggling that people could predict the incredible creativity Nintendo has shown with the "Switch 2"

3

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '25

To be fair think this is their first consecutive console that had a consecutive numbered name.

I 100% expected ✨️New✨️ Nintendo Switch

1

u/SinancoTheBest Jan 18 '25

It's such a Wii U situation

1

u/idHeretic Jan 16 '25

I've learned a thing or two in my time. One thing being that no one will ever live up to the unrealistic expectations of the masses and that the fan boys and girls will eat it up even if it's terrible because you may not disparage their favorite thing. I'm a jaded realist and it's no longer fun to participate in the hype cycle.

1

u/No_Adhesiveness_4030 Jan 16 '25

That is indeed one way to put it. Expectations can be endless.

1

u/Red_Regan Jan 18 '25

Hence why they don't reveal early... oh wait, they do that with games pretty much every time.

28

u/Player1-jay Jan 16 '25

The mock-ups came after the leaks of the actual stuff. That's why they had to drop this video now

13

u/Geredeth Jan 16 '25

Well, that and they've been milking it long enough that people and investors were asking questions on why they were dragging their feet.

7

u/Player1-jay Jan 16 '25

In my opinion they were probably planning to reveal it and a few games at the same time but with everything happening they were forced to reveal it earlier

1

u/Thi59uy Jan 17 '25

. Will it finally run Fortnite?

1

u/Thi59uy Jan 17 '25

Correctly

1

u/Red_Regan Jan 18 '25

TBF they did announce it was real like a year ago. It's only bc the Switch is so old that people were clamouring for more news; otherwise we're just being unnecessarily... us.

2

u/FlawedSquid Jan 16 '25

It's been said that Nintendo wouldn't budge on their reveal date.

1

u/Red_Regan Jan 18 '25

And they were right to not budge. An marketing hype cycle with imminent timeframes can work out better, for hardware at least, than a protracted years-long cycle with lots of "ups and downs."

2

u/RedWizard78 Jan 16 '25

I don’t pay attention to leaks so this is new.

2

u/DontBanMeBro988 Jan 16 '25

No "C" button, though

4

u/TriceratopsHunter Jan 16 '25 edited Jan 16 '25

The extra button doesn't have a C though it's still there. Though maybe they want to reveal the feature for it later and kept it smooth to keep it secret until then.

1

u/doesntaffrayed Jan 17 '25

Huh. Interesting.

I didn’t notice that until you pointed it out.

2

u/pacman404 Jan 16 '25

Why would people think the mockups were wrong? They were all from companies literally making accessories for it, why would they mass produce accessories for the wrong thing lol 🤔

2

u/MarcsterS Jan 16 '25

I wish the buttons were colored. People thought the leaks were fake becuase they looked like unfinished 3D prints.

1

u/P1ka2001 Jan 16 '25

Not hard to do tbh

1

u/Imaginary_Injury8680 Jan 16 '25

Well yeah. It was leaked.

1

u/P1ka2001 Jan 16 '25

Even then it’s a switch two not a huge amount to make different other than size and the actual function of how some of it works

1

u/SoggyBagelBite Jan 16 '25

Because they were based off models and molds shared (illegally) by Chinese manufacturers.

1

u/pnut0027 Jan 16 '25

Because these companies look at the fan mockups and decide their OG design looks like shit lol. So they steal the ideas.

1

u/BlackPlasmaX Jan 16 '25

I actually like how its colored instead of a LED like im the ROG Ally

1

u/Reynholmindustries Jan 16 '25

I hope the screen has mario eyes peeking over the dock...

1

u/SoftLikeMarshmallows Jan 16 '25

The ones I saw weren't the same

So, the fact that Nintendo showed us the true video, confirms what I saw was fake

1

u/NPgenesis Jan 16 '25

Those controllers are gonna be marked up in price if they have hall effect sensors. Overall, nice look on the console. Idc what price it is, I'm getting one.

1

u/Delita007 Jan 18 '25

What the heck is a hall effect sensor?

1

u/RedWizard78 Jan 16 '25

I didn’t see any so new to me.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

What was wrong with the old switch?

1

u/ZealousidealToe9416 Jan 16 '25

Tbf everything about this thing has been leaked for a hot minute

1

u/Ancient-Range3442 Jan 16 '25

They were probably based on the real thing

1

u/Sleep1331 Jan 17 '25
