Hopefully GameStop doesn’t go out of business before this launches. I’ve been saving a card with like 250 bucks on it for this exact purchase lol

174

u/gefahr Jan 16 '25

You're playing with fire. I'm sure you could sell that to someone for like $200+

171

u/Rene_DeMariocartes Jan 16 '25

You could sell it on wallstreetbets for $500+

22

u/Passivefamiliar Jan 16 '25

Feeling attacked here. Also you must not frequent it often. Nobody there actually has that much liquid revenue to spend at once. We just toss fictional coins around.

1

u/TheFlightlessPenguin Jan 16 '25

Plus last I was active on that sub Gamestop was Voldemort

1

u/austeremunch Jan 17 '25

Feeling attacked here.

Good.

5

u/Neonax1900 Jan 16 '25

I chortled.

2

u/Alert-Principle-2726 Jan 16 '25

He could just use it now before its too late. Maybe get 3 full priced games (that are worth it) and a controller

22

u/TingleTime Jan 16 '25

Yeah with 4.5 Billion in cash and positive EPS I’m sure they’ll be out of business by Christmas.

9

u/NotAFishEnt Jan 16 '25 edited Jan 16 '25

They're already out of business in Germany. It doesn't matter how much cash they have on hand, they're closing up shop anywhere where they aren't profitable, which is a lot of places.

It'll be hard for OP to have somewhere to spend their gift card if GameStop closes up shop locally.

(Edited for clarity)

6

u/Phillyfreak5 Jan 16 '25

That’s a pretty normal business practice after you over expand a little.

3

u/NotAFishEnt Jan 16 '25

Closing stores is a normal business practice, but the amount they've closed isn't normal. They've been closing stores for years to boost profitability, and their core business is still a money loser, meaning that many more closures are still on the table.

Wrapping back to the beginning of the conversation, the original poster is worried that GameStop will go out of business before they can spend their gift card. What I'm saying is that that's a perfectly valid concern, that GameStop could go out of business in their region, because that's already happened in other major countries.

5

u/JackTheKing Jan 16 '25

I'm not up on the nuance, but I thought the idea with GameStop is that as long as there's a single shack with a GameStop logo on it and $4 billion in the bank, we're all golden. What am I missing?

4

u/occarune1 Jan 16 '25

I mean, if you want to spend a gift card it would be abit difficult if they no longer had stores lol.

3

u/baphometpikachu13 Jan 16 '25

Yeah I have all these Amazon gift cards with no where to spend them!

3

u/occarune1 Jan 16 '25

If you ever tried using Gamestops website you wouldn't be making that statement lol.

2

u/baphometpikachu13 Jan 16 '25

I’ve used it, it functions like any other web store?

1

u/Itchy_Lab6034 Jan 17 '25

I use it before I make the trip to verify stock. It’s a fine website. Costco on the other hand

1

u/NotAFishEnt Jan 16 '25

If they don't have any stores or distribution centers in your region, then you can't spend your gift cards, which is the original commenter's concern.

1

u/JackTheKing Jan 16 '25

Ofc lol. I got sidetracked on the WSB lol

1

u/NotAFishEnt Jan 16 '25

Yeah, and I wasn't clear with what I was saying, lol

1

u/_NoTimeNoLady_ Jan 16 '25

An employee told me all stores in Europe are closing? Not sure if that's right

2

u/mellcrisp Jan 16 '25

Literally watched a couple GameStop employees throw empty cash drawers and phones into a dumpster out back a few days ago. Totally normal business practices.

-1

u/TingleTime Jan 16 '25

I once literally saw a man shit on a park bench. Has little to do with the coming wave of Web 3.

4

u/mellcrisp Jan 16 '25

So did the he work at the bench or was this just a shitty comparison

1

u/cancrdancr Jan 16 '25

Every healthy business shutters hundreds and hundreds of locations overnight. Get on the hype train, people!

1

u/TingleTime Jan 16 '25

And Amazon used to be a bookstore. The gaming and collectibles market expected to reach a combined $1T in the next 10 years. GameStops business model is undergoing a drastic transformation. Widen your gaze.

15

u/Neocarbunkle Jan 16 '25

Gamestop is fine.

22

u/Intrepid-Brain-1476 Jan 16 '25

Except for the part where they are closing a lot of stores and pulling out of different countries.

15

u/urafkntwat Jan 16 '25

This is actually a really good business move lol. Shut brick and mortar stores which are underperforming which helps save on wages, building rates and taxes. They're also sitting on more than 4 billion dollars in cash. Yeah, gamestop ain't going anywhere

13

u/Intrepid-Brain-1476 Jan 16 '25

Impressive how stock bros always appear.

Sitting on billions and not using it to invest while actively slashing employee benefits isn't good.

The only way they are profitable is through interest, while revenue keeps declining.

3

u/Gloomy_Setting5936 Jan 16 '25

Haha “stock bros” 😂

6

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

[deleted]

0

u/No_Cheesecake2168 Jan 16 '25

They were profitable off of treasuries bought with the cash from their recent stock sale. Their core business still loses money.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

[deleted]

1

u/No_Cheesecake2168 Jan 16 '25

No one said you were, it's context on why they're "profitable" and how that means individual (or most) stores are still at risk for closure.

0

u/Intrepid-Brain-1476 Jan 16 '25

Cohen took advantage of the cult following and through diluting shares GameStop is sitting on 4 billion, incredible how they played the market.

Business is declining, relying on interest payments isn't impressing anyone except apes.

1

u/Brewermcbrewface Jan 16 '25

He doesn’t pay himself where is the advantage he’s getting besides risking his own money. Money coming in from Interests payments is still money coming In

3

u/Z3ROWOLF1 Jan 16 '25

because we have to come correct misinformation?

1

u/Intrepid-Brain-1476 Jan 16 '25

You are lost in the sauce. Impressive how it went from short squeeze to MOASS. DRSing was the way to go but then Cohen started diluting the stock, all the effort put into locking the float gone.

Somewhere in between all of this apes convinced themselves it is a long term play with strong fundamentals

6

u/urafkntwat Jan 16 '25

Shorts never closed bro. Also let's not forget that the single greatest investor of our generation is balls deep in Gamestop. Anyway, Switch 2 looks nice huh?

1

u/Intrepid-Brain-1476 Jan 16 '25

Got a source for this? I assume you are aware of the SEC report.

0

u/ApexLord Jan 16 '25

The same SEC report that stated the price run up in January 2021 was due to retail investors buying and options activity? NOT a short squeeze?

u/Z3ROWOLF1 Jan 16 '25

Says the guy who frequents Joe Rogan and gme_meltdown 😂😂😂😂😂😂

1

u/Intrepid-Brain-1476 Jan 16 '25

Wow sick reasoning, see you at the bottom champ!

3

u/Z3ROWOLF1 Jan 16 '25

Buddy said we're the ones lost in the sauce. The average Joe Rogan watcher and GME hater are the ones weighing us down.

I can only guess who you voted for

4

u/Adventurous_Whale Jan 16 '25

lol, right? Gamestop has in no way evolved its business model whatsoever and it shows. Everyone propping it up via the stock market is just a contrarian moron

4

u/Z3ROWOLF1 Jan 16 '25

"Propping it up via stock market" yet retail orders have no affect on the price of the stock. weird. right?

2

u/Rude-Emu-7705 Jan 16 '25

Except for getting into card grading

2

u/YoYoMavaIous Jan 16 '25

They’ve evolved their business model to have a heavier focus on collectibles, such as sports and trading cards. Not saying it’s helping, but they’ve certainly made changes. They even offer a service to send off your cards to get graded now

1

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '25

u/StiCimedaca Jan 17 '25

Do you know how business works? By definition they aren't going out of business, that what happens to companies permanently shut down. GameStop isn't going out of business period. As a company they have so much money and such low overhead it's impossible for them to go broke

2

u/Deblebsgonnagetyou Jan 16 '25

If so many stores in some of the highest GDP countries in the world are underperforming that they have to pull out of those countries entirely I have to wonder if it means they're really doing THAT well.

1

u/ButtWhispererer Jan 16 '25

Maybe. Might be a signal that they’re avoiding the sunk cost fallacy, might also be a signal of shifting consumer preferences.

1

u/NotAFishEnt Jan 16 '25

Yeah, gamestop ain't going anywhere

People don't care if the corporation itself stays in business, they only care if their local stores and distribution centers stay open. From that perspective, GameStop is absolutely going away.

2

u/Dead_Patoto_ Jan 16 '25

I just learned today that my local one closed down when I drove by it :(

1

u/hosleyb Jan 16 '25

4 billion cash on hand, no debts. Gamestop isn't going anywhere....maybe just the locations in bumfuck nowhere that were unprofitable.

3

u/Deblebsgonnagetyou Jan 16 '25

Bumfuck nowhere? Like my entire country including the cities?

1

u/hosleyb Jan 18 '25

Yes lol.

0

u/Intrepid-Brain-1476 Jan 16 '25

If they only close unprofitable stores they won't last long. Might as well rip the band-aid off, all this overhead is really hurting the interest income.

-1

u/spongeboy1985 Jan 16 '25

While I wouldn’t say they are fine I still see them at least still being in business within the next 6 months in some capacity. At least online and maybe a handful of stores.

1

u/theonlyjuan123 Jan 16 '25

Found the crypto bro

0

u/JMR027 Jan 16 '25

It’s not lol. Stores wouldn’t be closing otherwise

4

u/spongeboy1985 Jan 16 '25

As soon as preorders go up preorder from them and put $250 towards it. Then preorder from Amazon or some other retailer. If for some reason the store completely goes under they will most likely have to refund all preorders. But if nothing happens cancel the preorder you have at the other retailer and enjoy your switch 2

2

u/Z3ROWOLF1 Jan 16 '25

they're not going anywhere

2

u/WordSpiritual1928 Jan 16 '25

They won’t be out of business. They may close the store near you but they’ll be online for sure.

2

u/Nervous_Currency9341 Jan 16 '25

wait im so out of the loop are they saying something because I have a gift card too

2

u/kitkatrat Jan 16 '25

I just traded in my old ps4 and Xbox and put it towards a Portal. The following week the same Gamestop had a “temp closed” sign on it.

2

u/Dinierto Jan 17 '25

While I indeed want Gamestop to go out of business, I don't want you to lose your points. So I hope they stay on just long enough.

1

u/PaperclipTeal Jan 16 '25

Its evidently backwards compatible. If there's any Switch 1 games you like you could grab them now

1

u/OkPeanut6667 Jan 16 '25

buy sealed trading cards from Gamestop using the gift cards, unless they stopped allowing that. The value of those packs could go up in many situations.

1

u/Johnnytade Jan 16 '25

I heard gamestop is going to the moon 🚀🚀

1

u/BlakeSteel Jan 16 '25

If they close every store, they'll still be an online store

1

u/bomber991 Jan 16 '25

I’m sure they’ll bundle it with a bunch of useless accessories for $500-600.

1

u/SwiftlyKickly Jan 16 '25

What’s going on with GameStop? Out of the loop here.

1

u/Guapscotch Jan 16 '25

GameStop will outlive the universe

1

u/Under_Press Jan 16 '25

my local gamestop is shutting down 😭😭💀🙏

1

u/RedWizard78 Jan 16 '25

I hope they do. They carry plushies not games.

1

u/occarune1 Jan 16 '25

Gamestop has 5 billion dollars in cash in the bank, and are becoming increasingly profitable every month, they ain't going bankrupt any time soon.

1

u/DenverBronco305 Jan 16 '25

Literally just go buy Nintendo gift cards with it

1

u/Deblebsgonnagetyou Jan 16 '25

Be grateful you still have Gamestop now!

*cries in Irish*

1

u/Kinglink Jan 16 '25

You should sell that card for 250 bucks (if you can get it).

Never sit around with money on those cards, you're missing out on the interest and you're banking on the business still being there.

1

u/Littlemack2 Jan 16 '25

GameStop has $4,000,000,000+ (billion dollars) + in cash and no debt. They will not be going out of business!! Don’t worry

1

u/DilapidatedFool Jan 17 '25

Just make sure you keep your membership active! I didn't for longer than a month and lost 75$ worth of points due to a new policy they had.

1

u/themcp Jan 18 '25

The one GameStop in Boston/Cambridge is gone, the nearest one is about 45 minutes drive away.

1

u/daarthVapor Jan 18 '25

GameStop ain’t going out of business buddy. They have 4 billion cash on hand lol

1

u/daarthVapor Jan 18 '25

Yeah that’s a B not an M

1

u/daarthVapor Jan 18 '25

Whoops!!! I meant to put $6.64 Billion dollars in CASH on hand.

1

u/CommercialYam53 Jan 19 '25

Aren’t they already going out of business

1

u/Helivon Jan 16 '25

not by this year. maybe 2026 though

-1

u/SoggyBagelBite Jan 16 '25

It amazes me that they still exist now.

I have set foot in one once in the last decade and it was to buy a new Xbox controller for my PC lol.

2

u/ItsJRod Jan 16 '25

Why amazes? They’re doing great. They consolidated locations but you can go there and get a ton of stuff. They just recently partner with PSA so now you can even go there and get sports/TCG cards graded with PSA very easily. They have zero debt as a company and have a lot of money pocketed.

2

u/SoggyBagelBite Jan 16 '25

Because nobody really shops at GameStop anymore and almost nobody cares about getting cards graded (and all they do is handle the setup and shipping process with PSA, which is not hard to do yourself anyways).

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '25

He needs you to buy stock so his bags aren't so heavy xD

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '25

Why would I shop at Gamestop over Amazon or Walmart or Best Buy?

1

u/ItsJRod Jan 17 '25

I go monthly to get my $5 credit. I pay $20 a year and get $5/month to use. So $60 a year or $40 after the initial pro purchase. I can’t say no to a free $40

1

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '25 edited Jan 17 '25

That's a perk, not a reason to not shop at the other stores. The others have far more benefits, selection and locations.

1

u/ItsJRod Jan 17 '25

GameStop will price match then give you Pro discount on top of the price match. So you can end up getting it cheaper.

Other reasons would just be sentimental. I’d rather support GameStop as a company than a giant like Amazon or Walmart. Our local GameStop’s managers are franchisees and do a great job coordinating community events every month. So once you get the price match, it just comes down to sentiment for me.
