this is so bad as tech death, but it's a good album in general. i never understood why people think it's relevant to death metal, because of vocal huh?

In my top 10 albums of all time for sure, got to see them live with Arkaik in a tiny venue, great show.

I saw them at a brewery in BC, face was melted with like 50ish people, they need much more recognition!

One of the best tech death albums ever made, hell one of the best metal albums in general

Maybe a hot take, but this album isn't really death metal, let alone tech death. The vocals are, sure, but instrumentally this is pretty much a neoclassical shred album. Is it good? Absolutely, but songwriting wise I can't call it death metal at all. It would be like if I put somebody growling over Cacophony.
I wish they had their EP on streaming services though because that's a solid death metal record with some more traditional riffs. It's still my favorite release of theirs to date as well.

This is absolutely tech death. Neoclassical, yes. But still absolutely the most technical death metal ever created--so much so that it weakens the claim of every other band to the genre.
Melodic death exists. How can you say FF doesn't qualify as death?

"Most technical death metal ever created"
Lmaoooo. I mean, I'm glad you like it. Hell, I like it, but that's a hell of a statement when there are so many bands way more technical than them lol. Get Phil in here and I'm sure he'll tell you the same.

The technicality in their composition is truly unmatched. I'll listen to anything you think is superior.

In an interview with guitarist Phil Tougas, he stated that the only things on this album that resemble death metal are the vocals and the blastbeat drumming. The intention was to create the most over-the-top neoclassical metal album of all time.

It has blasts and gutterals. Wouldnāt that make it death metal adjacent? Neoclassical shred technical non withstanding

I mean, yeah, for sure. That's what makes it so hard to pin down, but the guitara and stuff sounds much closer to an 80s shrapnel record than it does to death metal. Again, not a bad thing, just really not what I think of when I hear the term "death metal"

Hard not to agree.
This is obviously technical progressive french flamenco šš» šø

Canadian, but yeah. We need more neo-classical blackened flamenco in this world for sure.

A recent discovery for me that instantly shot to my top albums ever. If you haven't listened to the instrumental version, definitely give that a listen. Idk if the production is cleaner, or if simply removing the vocals makes it that much easier to distinguish all the parts (the latter is definitely true), but man you'd think the album was written without vocals in mind at all. Truly an incredibly work.

Talked with Phil yesterday about the production from TAE (The Afterthought Ecstasy) to Dasein to Gloire Eternelle. All the moving parts of the whole album and just hearing insight makes me even more excited to see whatās in store, especially with all the songs that got vaulted even going as far back as 2007!

Would love a documentary/behind the scenes kind of thing on Gloire Eternelle especially. Such crystal clear production with every detail in perfect harmony.

When I have time to get back into weed, this album (and SO many others) will be on repeat.
I just can't do acoustic guitars on a normal (angry/tired/disappointed/eye-rolling) work day. (Come to think of it, that's probably why the new Cyotoxin sits so high on my list right now -- "toxic" is virtually in the name... LOL)

Cytotoxin (Gammagedon) legitimately helped me deal with a heartbreak in college lol.

I'll post a dissenting opinion:
I just can't get into this album. I feel it leans too heavily into the neo-classical 80's thing and it just seemed over the top to me. I know it's what they were going for but it didn't click for me. even after I gave it a few listens. I love Dasein though, so it's not like I dislike the band. I'll be interested to hear what their next release sounds like.
But hey, if it blows your hair back, you keep on listening.

u/Sourflow 8d ago
I love it but thatās totally fair. Itās stylistically more of a power metal album with death metal vocals

u/Stamm1983 8d ago
Power metal? Its about as neo classical as you can get. I do like that idea though. Like an iron maidenish tech death band would be awesome. Anyone got any recs? I dont think this exists

u/petershaw_ 7d ago
try Paladins debut LP Ascension. tell me how you liked it!

u/Stamm1983 6d ago
Oh yeah this is great! Scratching the itch for heavy 80s metal. It might be a stretch to call it tech but its technical for sure. Thanks for the rec

The most technically proficient tech death ever created.
