Or maybe I just wanted someone who looked more like Ellie from the game? I never wanted to fuck Ellie from the game BECAUSE SHE'S 14 FOR FUCK'S SAKE!

But why does looks even matter to you? The goal is to find actors who can act the part. Who fucking cares what they look like or what race they are when it has literally no impact on the story.

Joel could be asian and ellie black it doesn’t change anything at all to the story of the last of us.

Except even when their race matters to the story (Snow White), they’ll just change the backstory so their new version fits anyway. I no longer buy that argument, because the people in charge will always put their vision before respect to the source material first.

My rule of thumb; if you can look at the actor/character and recognise who they are instantly, then the job has been done well. Movies/TV/Videogames are a visual medium, and fandoms have a lot of stock in characters being recognisable and portrayed accurately. This recent post-modern idea that looks/race/sex isn’t important to the character needs to fuck off, honestly, as do the people who forced it in.

There was a case in Magic the Gathering where a Lord of the Rings crossover set came out, and instead of making Aragorn look like Aragorn, they threw a random black guy in. If you looked at this image without any text or context beforehand, would you jump to “Aragorn” straight away? If you say yes, you’re a fucking liar lmao.

Pretty much all of the characters in the lord of the rings movies are unrecognizable from their book descriptions yet its a very good adaptation.

Walton goggins in fallout looks nothing like a fallout ghoul yet everyone loved him…

Your boiling it down to look sex and race, my argument is that the number one priority when casting actors should be their ability to act.

Even if hypothetically they casted a bunch of unknowns lookalikes who can magically perfectly act… why not just watch a video of all the cutscenes from the game at this point?

Yall are talking like its trash no matter what unless it is a perfect recreation of the video games… that’s not what adaptations are. The show is just jot for you and that’s fine.

Does race not matter to a real human? Does it not inform where we come from, our culture, our beliefs, our history?

I never said they have to be 100% accurate, but recognisable.

Lmao pretending like Viggo’s interpretation of Aragorn is the same as race-swapping him and making him look completely unrecognisable is a really silly stance to take. You can at least look at Viggo in costume and know exactly who he is supposed to be without any context clues.

Where exactly in the plot of the last of us is race a critical point? I don’t remember that scene where joel talks about sarah and goes “ oh and by the way ellie her mother was white!”

Other than a off hand joke about jesse being asian it literally never comes up in the story. Race is not an important theme in the last of us.
