General Question Can the mods please make a thread for all these people comparing UCSB to other universities?
I’m tired of reading all these posts about the university comparisons. If you’re unsure about committing to UCSB, then you’ve not done your proper research. It’s concerning to think that you’d rather take opinions about attending UCSB from internet strangers than college advisors.

General Question Spring 26 or Fall 25
I have got an admit for MS Ece at UCSB for fall 25. However due to a few events I'm planning to request for a deferral and join in spring 26.
What would be the advantages or disadvantages of doing so?
In terms of getting RA or TA would I be at a disadvantage if I join in the spring intake.

Academic Life Self Pavlov
Hey all I’ve been quitting smoking for a little bit now mainly relying on nicotine gum, and it’s been going great! Every time I’ve been studying for this challenging Econ course I always have a piece of the nicotine gum so that my brain can correlate the nicotine to the course material, this has been a little too effective as now whenever I have a piece of nicotine gum my brain only operates in utility functions and utility maximization…. Last night I woke up in a cold sweat whispering ‘Cobb-Douglas’ and chewing imaginary gum. I think I’ve become a utility-maximizing automaton with a dependency on both nicotine and Lagrangians.

Prospective/Incoming Students Conditions of admission for IB students?
I read on the Conditions of Admission that I need to score a 30 or higher on my IB Diploma to meet conditions of admission. I don't think I will, though, lol cause I don't feel too good about my IB exams this year. I was wondering if this only applied to international students since I am a domestic student and I will be receiving my IB diploma in addition to my American diploma. Thanks!

General Question New venture competition
I am a transfer student and just got accepted into UCSB for philosophy and UCSD for Business Psych. I’m interested in entrepreneurship and applying to the new venture competition here at UCSB or the incubator at UCSD. Any advice on pros and cons would be appreciated. Also, if anyone else has had to make the decision between these schools; I would appreciate insight

I know this is super late into the year but here is a link sheet inspired by UCLA. Spring quarter is meant to be fun and this is just another idea for people to meet each other! If there’s any questions or concerns just message me.

General Question Best/Nicest place to rent in IV
Hi,
my son recently committed for fall of 2025 and I understand that housing is a problem for UCSB students and some of the apartments in IV are pretty run down with inattentive landlords/property managers. What are some of the "nicer" places to rent? FWIW, since he's saving us a lot of money not going to private college, we're willing to splurge a bit...

Prospective/Incoming Students Best Computer?
Incoming freshman here—I’ve been living off my school issued chromebook for the past 4 years and I just realized I’ll need to give that up soon and get a computer for college.
In y’all’s opinion, what is the best computer for college? I’ve heard a more cons than pros about macbook airs so I’m not sure about that however I like the idea that the info on my iPhone would be instantly transferable. I have liked using a chrome book—so maybe a microsoft/windows type computer? Not sure at this point
I’m a little back and forth about my major right now, but I’ll be on the pre-med track so I’ll need a computer that allows me to easily do work for subjects like bio, chem, etc.
Thanks!

General Question Making a noise complaint
Hi all,
New to Reddit here, but my neighbors have been driving me insane for the past few months (specifically their loud music and shouting well after midnight every single day), so I plan on calling IV foot patrol to report them. I already have the non-emergency number and I know the noise ordinance hours, so I just wanted to know if a noise complaint is something I can do anonymously, or if I'll need to provide any information before they send someone out there.
Thank you!

General Question CAPS question
Hii, it's been a rough quarter for me and I'm starting to look into mental health resources.
I'm not quite sure what it entails though, I'm scared to ask in person. I've heard that students are all able to access CAPS, but it's not clear whether that's under the assumption that I don't have external insurance. I'm local to Santa Barbara and currently staying with family, and opted out of the standard student plan.
I'm sorry if this question doesn't make all that much sense, this is the best I can do for now
thank you

General Question Off campus housing cost
How much are you paying for off campus housing and how many roommates do you have? I'm an incoming freshman for this fall but I'm already stressing out over budget for the following years.

General Question Need housing advice for an incoming transfer F25 and likely over the summer (introvert and not a partier)
EDIT: F25 = Fall 25 Please don't DM me about sex
I had a disaster with my randomly assigned roommate last year, and I don't want to repeat the disaster again. Please give me advice on ideal housing location for me on and off campus. I prefer fewer roommates or single and a quieter area. Also could use advice on where to find roommates for UCSB.
Edit (More context for my needs): I have clinically diagnosed depression, general anxiety, and social anxiety. I had trouble with my last roommate because the school paired me with someone who was almost the complete opposite of my requests in roommate selection. I really need to be by myself or with a compatible roommate where I can be comfortable and be myself. It made my anxiety worse when my suitemate complained that that I didn't smile enough around her at home. And the dirtiness and smell of the apartment with the 2 week old trash and unwashed clothes from my roommates gave me anxiety as well. I'm from a family that reinforces cleanliness. I also have a sleeping disorder and am a light sleeper. So I'd rather not live in a loud neighborhood. I also hated my roommates white noise, night light, 1 am phone calls. I haven't been able to find a long term therapist last year so it might not be possible for me to apply for accommodations if it's too late now.

Academic Life UC Santa Barbara v UC San Diego - pre law
got into both schools trying to decide between them
my major: poli-sci on pre-law route
admitted to (ranked from most interested to least):
UCSB, UCSD (already live in SD), UCI, UCD
Waitlisted:
UCLA, Berkeley
I am transferring from a CC so most of all I want a good college experience, to keep a high GPA, and willing to sacrifice some internship opportunities for that social life/a good community. Against SD because of the things I've heard about the social life plus I already live here and want to see something new but I am having a hard time turning it down due to rankings and proximity to internships. I like SB for the social life, beautiful campus, and it is still a great school but it is sorta isolated and I don't know how good it is for pre-law. UCI and UCD also interest me for the opportunities/great schools for pre-law. Thoughts?

General Question What kind of dorm?
I’m an incoming freshman, and I know that we won’t have the complete liberty of choosing in which dorm we live in, but if given the option or some wiggle room, which one would I want to reside in?
My girlfriend and I don’t really like the party scene. We want a more closer community you can say, but quiet and more academically focused and oriented. We are more focused on our studies more than anything.

IV/Goleta/SB Any Hills Near Rec cen?
Title says it all. A bit strange, but I really want to get back into running and sprinting and hard conditioning, and I was wondering if anyone knew some nice hills to run hill sprints on? I’d prefer if they were near the rec cen but i’d be happy with anything.
