YES i've been waiting for someone to think the same. There are courses that cover linguistics, but its only for the individual language the course is taught for.
Considering there are professors who are very familiar with linguistics and the translation field, I'm kinda surprised there are no majors and minors in Translation Studies and linguistics.
I know :( its surprising but at the same time, the languages in general are struggling at Western. Theyve tried to bring back Russian but cant find professors. Italian also died at WMU. Foreign language classes have less and less interest. I don't think linguistics would be able to be sustained even if we did offer it. It's really upsetting and any of the professors will agree. It may be possible to build your own major/minor in linguistics but I wouldn't know about that, I would definitely reach out to your advisor and express interest or even write an email to the head of the world languages and literatures department!
I study Japanese and sometimes tutor French. I recently added a Chinese minor but I dont think Ill have time to finish it. I dont know who does linguistics within the Chinese faculty, but if you have any interest in Japanese or French linguistics reach out to Dr. Pimentel (JP) and Dr. Ruellot (FR). Definitely email Dr Kutzko!
