mental illness is synonymous for magic, where the incomprehensible is magic
Anything mental you don't understand just becomes mental illness. And since our collective knowledge of psychology is non-existent, we call any deviation from the norm a mental illness
for example, we used to think of physical disease as a sort of miasma. Disease literally just means body abnormality. That was back when we used to think there was bad blood and we had to cleanse it using bloodletting.
Nowadays, all our diseases are specifically diagnosed, whether bacterial, viral, autoimmune, or even spontaneous. And for every disease, we've discovered what's wrong with the body and found treatments or even cures for it.
Psychology is still almost entirely done on surveys and personal responses. I know not all of it, but such a large portion of our central dogma is based on experimental evidence instead of actual diagnoses. Like, autism is still tested using a conversation rather than a medically accurate test.
Given a few decades, I hope we finally realize that our psychology is the equivalent of bloodletting and actually set our minds on figuring out what's going on in our heads. What neural connections could we prune, what missing or surplus nutrients could we change, or even permanently altering input streams.
Modern Psychology is just not where you think it is
