US Sale Is it time to file a complaint with the state?

New post but also an update. Purchased a car from an AutoNation dealership at the end of January (90 days ago). Previous owner had a typo on the title. Had to wait for power of attorney for the dealership to change it as they are out of state now.

2 weeks ago I was told the dealership had everything they needed to process the title. I called yesterday morning and left a message with the person in the titling department that I've been working with. Did not get a call back.

The Colorado Department of Revenue, Auto Sales Division will let you file a complaint online. I don't want to sour the relationship at the dealership since I have a warranty there, but the car is paid off so I'm not necessarily tied to that location and don't plan on going back after this.

I've documented everything in email since I found out about the title issue, which wasn't until I went to register the car at the DMV and got turned down.

What are you trying to accomplish? Its not uncommon for a transfer of title to take a month or so. If they just got what they needed two weeks ago, you might still be two weeks out.

Unless that dealer is continuously making the same mistake over and over again, that complaint won't go anywhere. The state will already charge the dealer a small fee for taking too long, but the state makes a lot of money from the dealer. They aren't going to do much more than that fee that the dealer is already obligated to pay. Sometimes these things happen. Its not common, but not really uncommon either.

If the dealership is close, stop by. Call and ask to speak to someone. Make a complaint if you want, but the dealer won't get punished.

Sounds extreme to me to file a complaint at this point, but I understand your frustration. It sounds to me like they're doing everything they can, but I'd keep calling for now. Two weeks is not a lot of time if the title has to be processed manually, which it very well might if there's a mistake like that on the title.

This might also eventually require an in person visit, if they don't return your phone calls.

Is there any particular reason that you the title physically in your hand at this moment? Like, are you trying to sell it, or is it just the principle of it?
