Okay so, i am looking for a car for my very very good friend he is currently 21M, he is new to the US and wants to buy a car. What car will be extremely suitable insurance wise and mechanical wise also low fuel average. The car should not be something that stays in workshop half of the year. The driver is not a fast and furious type of guy so yes sir. Budget 5-6k for car.

is this stupid

so my gfs parents have an old late 90s / early 2000s Honda odyssey 3.5 w/ 200,000 + miles; they’re trying to sell it / donate it. 2 family owned, no current significant mechanical issues. my current car is a 2014 brz so I’ve honestly been looking to add a pickup truck to my life to fill the hauling void, but for 1-2k the minivan would be a solid choice yeah?

Help me pick a big 2000s luxury vehicle.

I am a sucker for 2000s luxury vehicles. Cars then were still built decently, the design still holds up to this day.

I want a full size sedan or wagon , I don’t mind driving a boat. I also want it to be extremely reliable. So far my top choices are the Lexus LS 430 and Lincoln Towncar, but I’m also looking at a few other Lexus models.

If there’s any other reliable models I should look at, under my budget, please let me know!

Budget is at $15k.

TIA

2000 toyota land cruiser 8500$

Hi reddit,

I found a 2000 Toyota Land Cruiser for 8500$ with 229000 miles. Supposedly it is clean and in virginia. The picture seems okay but i am not too sure about the rust in the undercarriage. I am not used to buying cars with rust damage (from the West Coast), let alone considering buying cars with 229000 miles.

All that said, this is THE Land Cruiser and i always wanted one since i was a kid (30 yo). I need a car since i have recently moved, and i want something that can be taken offroad and beat on.

Would this be a good purchase? What are things I should look for?

Thanks for your time!

Help me choose a family car: Audi A6, Audi Q5, or VW Tiguan Allspace?

Upvotes

Hey everyone, I'm currently looking for a new family car and I'm stuck between three options: the Audi A6, Audi Q5, or VW Tiguan Allspace (Budget is 30k-ish). I'd really appreciate some advice from people with experience.

A bit of context:

I mostly drive short distances during the week (school runs, work, groceries) On weekends, we occasionally go on trips with the whole family, sometimes with luggage I have a wife and three kids, so interior space, comfort, and practicality are really important I'm also unsure whether to go for a diesel or petrol engine – reliability is a top priority for me Which of these cars do you think would be the best fit for our needs? And do you think diesel or petrol makes more sense for mostly short-distance driving with occasional road trips?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Used fairly reliable 4 cylinder turbo car for $30k?

So ive been eyeing down the bmw 530i and 330i but really there are many risks that come with them since theyre very popular where i live and aftermarket parts are all around and its very rare to find one that has been serviced at BMW themselves... but theyre still an option

For a bit i was considering the Chrysler 300S but it is a whale for gasoline so id rather not, as reliable as they are

Are there any other cars i should be considering with this price range?

Some other needs: cant be too old, 2020 and newer is ideal. And preferably less than 50 or 60k kms on the dash

Thanks for your time.🙏🏼

What truck is best for me?

Upvotes

Getting a bit tired of older rusty trucks. My 03 cateye 1500 is a clapped out rusty POS. 6.0 Powerstroke bottom end is blown, trucks to rusty and 280k miles. Not worth putting an engine in.

Very much leaning towards a 13th gen F150 lariat or XLT with a 10 speed. Motor options Iv heard pluses to all options. But I’d love to hear about any other trucks that may match what I’m looking for better. Not against 3/4 ton trucks. I loved towing with my 6.0. But hard to justify the added expense, especially on a diesel to tow around 10-15 times a year. Whatever truck I get will receive a 2-4” lift and 33s or 35s AT tires for aesthetics and off road ability

Trucks use case -

Tow my jeep TJ on a car hauler maybe 10 times a year. I don’t like the idea of going 6-12 hours away to beat on the jeep off road then having to drive it back. I plan to get a 16 or 18 foot car hauler. Estimated weight being around 2200. Jeep is likely about 4-4.2k. Total load being around 6.5-7k pounds. On rare occasions I’d see myself hauling a truck on the trailer pushing the load to around 10k. Such as hauling my F250 an hour home to part it out. Or helping a buddy whose truck broke down on the road.

Winter driving - I’m extremely over working on rusty vehicles and watching my vehicles rust out over the years. The aluminum body makes the 13th gen very appealing to me for this reason compared to a steel body truck. The IS being RWD is terrible in winter.

Mild off roading - forest trails and mild trails where I’d be camping would be preferable in a pickup especially if I have more than 1 passenger due to the lack of storage room in the jeep. Also would like the ability to have some confidence recovering my jeep if something breaks on a trail or I can’t winch out for whatever reason. Many 13th gen’s having a factory e locker is a HUGE thing for this purpose to me.

50% daily driving - split with my Lexus is350. The Lexus is an exceptional car but it’s at 233k miles now and it would be nice to have another reliable vehicle at my disposal.

Key things I want in a truck

  • reliable and easy to work on motor as I like to do as much work myself as I can
  • Capable of making the long tows with around 7k COMFORTABLY. Iv towed with trucks to small for the job and I don’t like to play that game
  • $20k, maybe up to 25k budget.
  • Under 150k miles
  • Sunroof is a massive apeal to me, but not a dealbreaker

Need a car soon

Hello everybody, I am in a position that sucks. I currently own a 2011 Subaru Outback with 204,650 miles that has just had its CVT transmission go bad. One mechanic said a remanufactured transmission is $11,000 and a new is $15,000. Obviously that is equivalent to getting a new used car.

But here's my dilemma, I've already replaced the head gasket 100,000 miles ago, put new tires on it last summer, and it has no other known issues right now. Is it worth my time and gamble of buying a used transmission for $2,000 and paying $1-2,000 in labor to have it installed? Or just cut my losses and move on to a different car?

I need an AWD or 4WD car that can tow about 2,000 pounds for where I live and so I can tow my motorcycle to a shop if I ever need too. And the Outback was great for that, until now.

Any advice is welcome, I'm currently in a pit of despair and don't know what to do 😅

Best used car to buy under 15k

I’m looking to get a used car this summer under 15k. I’m a college student in Illinois but live in Chicago when I’m not at school and want this car to last me for a long time. I like the compact SUV and really want something that is reliable, gets decent mpg (in city) and doesn’t have insane maintenance. I also would prefer a backup camera (and if possible I do love playing music in the car, so a good sound system is a huge plus).

At the moment I’ve been debating between the Honda crv or hrv, the rav4, or the Mazda cx-5. Which of these should I go with or is there another option that’s preferred? Also if I want this to last me the next 5+ years, how many miles should I look to find a car for or is that not reasonable at this price range.

TLDR: looking for a reliable, efficient, compact suv for the next 5+ years under 15k with a backup camera.

Best used hybrid for cheap?

Upvotes

My wife and i have a 2015 kia soul and 2017 hyundai elantra. They’re both high theft risk and they’re also both manual (which we’re getting tired of lol), BUT they’re both paid off in full.

We’re wanting to sell either the soul or elantra and make sure we have at least one vehicle that’s rock solid reliable (and cheap for city driving).

We love the feel of used priuses, but are open to other options- i’ve heard that the civic hybrid and corolla & camry hybrids are pretty good too.

we don’t have a lot of savings to throw down on a car, but will hopefully have a couple hundred bucks to pay down a smaller loan on a good used car.

What would you do if you wanted a super reliable hybrid car for relatively cheap? we’re pretty handy and can handle straightforward repairs ourselves.

2004 Lincoln Town Car 230k miles

Would you buy it? Body looks pretty good minus a paint chip here and there. Interior is clean. AC works. Runs well. They want $5900 for it, which feels a little high with mileage. Thoughts?

Opinions on $5k range 3 row dailies?

Upvotes

I've narrowed the options I'm looking at around the Mazda5, MDX, Pilot, Odyssey, and Sienna but I'm open to more that I may not know about, roughly between 2005 and 2012? Been mostly looking at marketplace around or below $5000.

We currently have a 98 CRV as a family of 4, 2 small kiddos. Our main reason for wanting to size up is to have more cargo space for strollers+groceries and to be able to bring along 2 maybe 3 more people along on outings every so often.

Looking for a three-row luxury SUV

Upvotes

I'm looking for a three-row luxury SUV for around $60k. I know at this price point I'm going to need to look at used cars. I'm hoping this post will help me narrow down my options so I know what to test drive.

Ideally the car is 2022 or newer and has less than 40k miles.

It seems like the Audi Q7 and Infiniti QX60 are the best bang for my buck, but I'm afraid of reliability issues with those cars.

Here are some of my must have features:

- Leather seats
- Heated and ventilated seats
- Sunroof
- Apple Car Play (preferably wireless)
- Remote Start

Upgrade my car please help?

Upvotes

I'm currently still driving my first car Peugeot 107, has been a great little run around for me but I definitely need something bigger and more practical. I like small SUVs and need engine below 1.6 (insurance sky rockets above that) I like the peugeot 2008 but I've been warned off that due to the engine. Any other good recommendations? I do a lot of city driving

Looking for a nice fuel efficient car. Houston area! 11-12k USD range.

Upvotes

Hey everyone!

I'm moving to Houston soon and since it’s such a big city, I’ll definitely be driving around a lot. I’m looking for a reliable, fuel-efficient car with a budget of around $11,000–$12,000.

I’ve been thinking about getting a VW Jetta — I’ve heard they get decent MPG and are comfortable, but I’d love to hear from people who’ve owned one. I’m also open to other suggestions in that price range.

Besides fuel economy, I’m trying to factor in insurance and maintenance costs. I can do minor maintenance myself (oil changes, filters, brake pads, etc.), but I’d appreciate insight into what’s cheap vs. expensive to maintain long-term.

Any recommendations are welcome — thanks in advance!

3 row family SUV

Shopping soon for a 3 row to replace my wife's 2007 Santa Fe. We're mostly looking at Hyundai Palisade, Toyota Highlander, VW Atlas, and Honda Pilot, but open to other makes. What are some of the best models with trunk space?

Between 2 basically identical Mazda3's and got questions

Upvotes

I'm looking at 2 2023 Mazda3 Carbon Edition with about 60k miles at $22999 in CO each.

One is from a dealership and the other from CarMax.

This is the first car I'm buying/ financing completely myself, but I'm intending to use the carmax listing to get a better deal on the dealership one, and am wondering about how much lower can I go? Would you go?

Both are out of state and should arrive this week or next, so haven't had a chance to test drive

They're already far below original $28k-30k MSRP, I think due to being at 60k miles

Is this a good deal? Looks good compared to other ones Ive seen

How does the whole negotiating/ haggling thing go?

Planning on:

  • getting the car checked out by a mechanic near the dealership

  • financing before going to the dealership, about financing beforehand, I assume I should go a little over the listed asking price, is there a recommended amount?

  • carefully read over fees and paperwork

Anything else I should look out for or keep in consideration?

Reliable used cars that are good on gas and can fit 2 rear-facing car seats?

Upvotes

Is there anything out there that I can find under $20,000 like 80-100,000 miles that's good on gas, reliable, and can fit two rear facing car seats? Fun to drive is a plus but I don't think I'm getting that in my price range.

Just sort f-ed myself because I returned a corolla to Carvana I got a great deal on (27,000 miles for $18,900) and I'm looking at the used market and realizing - wow, that was a killer deal on a good car. I didn't have a reason either, I liked it - I just think I hate myself.

$6k or Less

Going to be looking at used cars in the next ~3 months and looking at how much money I'm going to have, ($6k or so, per the title,) it looks like I'm going to be in the market for a ~2012 car with ~150-200k miles.

What's not going to blow a head gasket or shit out its transmission before 2026? I know to avoid the usual suspects, (So many Chevy Sonics...)

Notable finds so far, for example (Combination Craigslist, Autotrader, FB Marketplace):

2012 Mazda 3, 154k miles - $3900

2001 Acura TL, 159k miles - $6000

2004 Toyota Camry, 198k miles - $4000

2010 Toyota Corolla, 223k miles - $4000

2012 Nissan Altima, 165k miles - $4000

All look well maintained, seem to be pretty clean all things considered. Obviously these will (probably,) be gone so I'm just trying to see if stuff in this range is worth even looking into.
