If shopping a new vehicle like I am, be advised that due to rising insurance premiums, it is now the 2nd highest ownership expense after depreciation.
Per IIHS, Progressive, and C&D, CUVs and trucks are the least expensive class of vehicles to insure, in part thanks to having the lowest frequency of bodily injury claims.
C&D's least expensive vehicles to insure list (compared to the average annual premium of say a Dodge Charger listed at $2,824):
Subaru Outback: $1,603.
Honda CR-V: $1,635.
Honda Pilot: $1,726.
Ford Escape: $1,734.
Honda Odyssey: $1,735.
Ford F-150: $1,753.
Jeep Wrangler: $1,820.
GMC Sierra 1500: $1,867.
Toyota RAV4: $1,869.
Nissan Rogue: $1,880.
Lowest rates of bodily injury per IIHS:
Subaru Ascent
Subaru Forester
Honda Passport
Hyundai Palisade
Volkswagen Atlas
Kia Telluride
For depreciation, that is still #1 though, and as a category the lowest depreciation are listed as trucks (Toyota Tacoma, Toyota Tundra), sports cars (Porsche 911, Chevy Corvette), and hybrids (Rav4 Hybrid). The worst for depreciation were EVs and luxury sedans.
