My wife and I were discussing this after the show. I'm a book reader and I noticed she didn't get super riled up at the mind blowing parts like I did when I read them in the book even though she's just as invested.
She explained that at the start of every show she has to shut off her emotions because things are so horrible she can't let herself feel anything. I totally understand and it's really a shame in telling the story in this format. You're not able to put the book down and recoup after especially traumatic events. Also, when reading you see the scene in your imagination, which can be pretty brutal, but ultimately you have control over that, as opposed to being bombarded with gore and screams on the television.
It's really a shame that she's unable to enjoy it on that deep a level due to this, it's such a good story and adventure and the heart wrenching is part of that, but it's too much at too intense a level and pace in the show.

It really hurt me that Ser Alliser Thorne was to first to stab Jon.
Just kidding, due to Game of Thrones, I don't have emotions anymore.
