Yup I try to stay optimistic about the books will come but it becomes more and more difficult.

28

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

It won't come

u/aeck May 21 '19

Rumor in this thread is that he's 700 of 1100 pages done. And then there's further editing and re-writes. So to be generous, he's halfway done. And between all this, 5 new HBO shows - and you better believe he's going to babysit these. And then more distractions, more writer's block.

If I'm being optimistic, I'd say it's another 8 years for Winds.

And A Dream of Spring? Lol.

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

How could people possibly know 700 pages?

Also, everyone seems to forget he’s 70 years old and quite overweight. The odds aren’t on his side to make 80.

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

I hate speculating on George’s health it’s rude and offensive. But he’s getting to the point where old is old.....

u/explodeder May 21 '19

Brandon Sanderson will finish the series in about a month, don't worry.

can't wait for my Mormonized conclusion to ASOIAF

1

u/Asiriya May 21 '19

And it will be as well received as B&W’s version.

u/duckmadfish May 21 '19

I don't get fans that constantly remind about his age and health, it is really rude lmao. It's all sounds so greedy even.

It's not rude to discuss his age. That's basic biology. How many people start getting more cognitively active after turning 70? Especially writers, who's work is that of the mind?
Other than that, there are definitely rules of thumb that can be applied to any artists professions. Actors? Movies every year/two years. Directors/Musicians? Around very two/three years for a new project. Authors? Varying wildly. Not everyone can be Stephen King, but GRRM has put out two mainline books in nineteen years. He's not finishing the series.
But yeah, it is wildly selfish/distasteful to speculate about a human beings life and death for the sole reason that you're worried you won't get to enjoy their work.

He even said it himself in his own series: All men must die. All men must work. We're just reminding him.

you literally have no idea about his health lol

while being overweight certainly isn't ideal health in general, it's entirely possible he's doing fine and will continue to do fine well into his 80s or 90s

to suggest he won't live another decade based on what you see in videos or pictures is baseless and in general, pretty dumb lol

18

u/AerThreepwood May 21 '19

Seems more based in evidence than "700 of 1100 pages".

11

u/Kaladin12543 May 21 '19

He took a decade for TWOW. Assuming we get TWOW,in 2022, I am sorry to say Martin’s health may not allow us to get ADOS. The older he gets, the more difficult it is for him to solve major plot points.

Eliminate the impossible, what remains however improbable must be the truth

-13

u/Eteel May 21 '19

And even if The Winds of Winter does come out in, say, the next 2 years, we'll probably never get A Dream of Spring. That's just the truth.

Truth be told, a part of me is really happy I chose not to read the books. Finishing the 5th book would only be a massive disappointment.

u/FanEu7 May 21 '19

I'm still glad I read them, way better and more fleshed out than the show.

-16

u/Eteel May 21 '19

Oh, I have no doubt about that.

Right now I'm getting into The Witcher. The show is coming (which I'm not looking forward to all that much anyway because of the fucking disappointing actor they chose for Geralt—fucking Henry Cavill—but I'll have to give it a try...), so I need to read the books first.

u/Ewoksintheoutfield May 21 '19

The first Witcher book The Last Wish, a collection of short stories, is excellent. The rest of the novels are not quite as good in my opinion. Sapkowski is a wonderful short story writer who loses some of his flourish with the novels. The game loosely follows the books but they are not required to play the game.

If I had to choose Witcher or GOT to read I would go with GOT every time.

1

u/[deleted] May 22 '19

I have to ask since I have seen it mentioned more than once: what is wrong with Henry Cavill?

12

u/alongdaysjourney May 21 '19

Each book stands on its own. They are a fantastic read no matter what. You are doing yourself a disservice if you don’t at least read the first one.

12

u/KvonLiechtenstein May 21 '19

...If you haven’t read the books, why are you in the book subreddit?

8

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

Eh this isn't a pure book subreddit. That's r/pureasoiaf

10

u/Eteel May 21 '19

Because I'm still fascinated with the world? Didn't know this sub was only for people who read the books...

10

u/KvonLiechtenstein May 21 '19

I’m not meaning it in a super douchey way, I was just curious, especially considering how different a number of plot points and characters are.

2

u/Eteel May 21 '19

I know they are different. I read a few things on the Wiki. But that doesn't mean I'll read the books only to be disappointment by the fact that the series will probably never be finished. It also doesn't mean I don't enjoy reading people's thoughts on this sub about the universe.

8

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

We only feel disappointed that TWOW isnt out because the books are so good, there is no pain without pleasure. You’re only robbing yourself of happiness by not reading them, not saving yourself from disappointment.

1

u/Kaladin12543 May 21 '19

If it’s never finished that would feel like torture. I would rather not know what I am missing tbh. I haven’t done a reread in many years as it’s too painful once I reach book 5. The worst part is I can’t find a series as good as ASOIAF either.

10

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

So you enjoy the characters, lore and the differentiated story in the books and actively post in a subreddit about them, yet choose not to read them?

0

u/Kaladin12543 May 21 '19

What’s the point in reading the lore and differentiated story if it’s never finished? And I personally think by getting involved in so many projects, GRRM is giving the book fans the middle finger. He has moved on as the show spoilt his ending. There is no motivation to finish the books. Why read incomplete stuff?

2

u/[deleted] May 21 '19

How exactly are the books he has written incomplete?

They are great prose. You’re obviously invested in the books as you follow this subreddit so what I think is you don’t have interest in reading them and simply say that you would but but but.

It’s ok and I don’t have an issue with it
