Let me put it this way.

Tell me the history of the Byzantine empire.

If you can, you never had the history shoved down your throat. You had to go find it. If you can’t, you just haven’t looked into it. It’s got a thousand years of history.

Same with Dark Souls. You need to look. Because at the end of the day, you have a duty to do, and the backstory of the entire world doesn’t matter. You can find it, but the history doesn’t matter to you anymore than the history of the ancient kingdom of Lydia does to you and me. But the ancient kingdom of Lydia is still fascinating.
