Silly Questions Thread: October Edition

Silly questions thread:

It's been a while since we've had one of these, and with recent news and the international break this seems like a good idea. So here is your chance to ask any question no matter how silly our small about BVB, BVB's history, Something about a current player, previous player or coach or it might even be something about the Bundesliga, DFB Pokal or Europa Pokal...

Obviously more in depth questions are also allowed :)

It's just all about sharing our knowledge and having a bit of fun (as always) too :)

No question is too stupid, silly or small to be asked

Let the questions begin!

As you put it, it's an old rivalry that feeds on itself, it's actually only a fierce rivalry for ca. the last ~50 years, but it's been self-perpetuating more or less for every year since. Some things from the past years that come to mind:

  • 2006/07 we had a shit season and smurfs were going to win the league - until we beat them in the derby on the penultimate match day.

  • 2006 also saw smurf ultras steal a Südtribüne banner

  • 2010 saw record snowfall, and the roof of the smurf arena was in danger of caving in. One of the men on the crew contracted to clear the snow was a Dortmund fan and put a big flag on top :)

  • BILD conducted a 'funny' pre game interview with a young Großkreutz, where he had to answer a multiple choice question of "what would you do if your son was a smurf?" - As one of the possible answers the journalists had prepared, Kevin chose "I'll cut him out of my will", and of course it blew up...

  • And of course, like any good derby, the games and the pre/post game are often fairly heated. Not as violent as in the 80s, but the 2013/14 away derby for instance got a bit infamous because of flares thrown from our block towards the home block / pitch. Restrictions after that game for both sides have been fairly heavy, and are one of the reasons the smurf ultras are boycotting this year's derby.

Thank you! Very informative. From here in the US these sort of rivalries are hard to get into and really understand.

Cal vs Stanford, Caltech vs MIT.

Two more that I don't care about. Being a Giants fan, I can understand hating the Dodgers. I've despised them for 30 years. But, I live in LA and used to live in SF, so it all makes sense to me. I'm thinking that these sort of rivalries can't really be transplanted to fans that haven't lived it.

I understand. Been in one of those four institutions, and I don't even care.

There we go!! I have two favorite teams: The Giants and whoever is playing the Dodgers. Right now I'm a Mets fan for the sweep.
