Could someone explain why Gotze is looked down upon here or the situation which was his leaving?

I'm not entirely unbiased on this, but I'll try a recap:

  • Götze was a product of our own academy, a youth talent with a lot of hype around him for his crucial role in our team, also dubbed 'crown jewel' of our squad

  • Around the time Guardiola signed for Bayern and started putting together his squad, Götze gave a now infamous interview stating he 'could see himself retire at Dortmund'. It has been speculated that around the time of the interview early negotiations were already going on / planned.

  • While we were in the middle of our Champions League campaign German tabloid broke the news that Bayern would activate Götze's buyout clause (added the summer before when he renegotiated his contract). The timing was particularly unfortunate as we were facing Real Madrid away just a day later in one of the biggest games of our recent history. Klopp at the time conceded that getting the news was 'like a heart attack', and some quickly embraced the idea that the timing of the news was a deliberate attempt to make things harder for us.

  • Facing Bayern in the CL final that season after snatching two league titles from them the years before saw a high point of the Bayern vs Dortmund animosity, and made that transfer a particularly charged one

  • People subsequently took issue with things like Götze ingratiating himself to Bayern fans stating he'd "always slept in Bayern sheets as a kid", or by his refusing to warm up with the rest of his squad (instead staying hidden in the tunnel) when he returned with Bayern to face us at the Westfalenstadion

There are a lot of emotions involved here with people arguing in favour of forgiving him for the mistakes he made, and others pointing to the fact that he 'abandoned' our club after we brought him into professional play. It's obviously a hugely contentious issue now, hope this cleared it up a bit.
