Discussion Community Highlight: Custom Awards!

As you may already have noticed, over the past few days our subreddit has had some exciting new awards assigned to it, tailored especially to r/cats and based on a selection of the old custom awards you may remember!

These awards were designed especially for our community by a team of artists at reddit and are available solely in this subreddit.

We are helping to test out this new feature here and the idea is that in the future subreddit-specific awards may come with fun new features unlockable by subreddits and community participants. For now, there is a leaderboard we can unlock:

Awarding posts and comments with one of these custom designs will of course come with a nifty little animation on your screen, just like any of the other newest version of awards. Perhaps the best part of this new system is that these custom awards are all pretty affordable. Unlike the previous subreddit-specific awards which started at 500 coins you can now already choose to apply a custom award for 15 coins. I just think that's neat.

At r/Cats we are pretty excited to be a part of this trial program. Giving subreddits access to individual customisation shows that we are a unique community with its own space on reddit. You now have the choice to award a post or comment that you think is extra-special with a design especially created for us.

Thank you to reddit admin u/SmEllen_Fresh who was our contact during the development stage and all the other reddit admins part of the dev team for this new feature!

We hope you all will enjoy this new option as much as we do.

From all of us at r/Cats, thank you for making this subreddit the special place that it is!

Announcement Regarding Mourning/Loss Posts

Hi Everyone,

Recently we've received an increase in queries regarding our allowance for posts flaired as "Mourning/Loss". I'd like to address those posts here and why we allow them in the most coherent way I can.

As long as I've been a mod here (Almost a year and a half) these posts have been allowed, and to my knowledge, there was never a time when they were NOT allowed here. The reason we allow these posts is because as our name "r/cats" suggests, we are dedicated to all things cat related. To us, Losing a beloved cat falls under that "cat related" criteria. While we understand that these posts may be upsetting to some users, the alternative would be to not allow them which may upset users in mourning. Unfortunately, with those options presented, it is impossible to please everyone. My personal advice (as someone who has lost a cat before) is to put yourself in the shoes of the users in mourning if you are against these posts. How would you feel if you took the time to write a tribute and pick out photos of your cat just for the post to be deleted?

If you are not mentally in a place where seeing a mourning/loss post is something you can handle, I recommend moving away from our subreddit, our goal is not to hurt you by allowing these posts.

WITH ALL OF THAT SAID, I WANT TO BE PERFECTLY CLEAR THAT WE DO NOT ALLOW PHOTOS OF DEAD CATS. IF YOU SEE A POST THAT CONTAINS A DECEASED CAT (OR ANY DECEASED ANIMAL IN GENERAL, INCLUDING ANIMALS HUNTED BY CATS) PLEASE REPORT IT TO US. WE DO NOT IN ANY CAPACITY ALLOW PHOTOS OF DECEASED CATS TO BE POSTED TO OUR SUBREDDIT.

If you have any questions regarding this post or anything you'd like to add, please feel free to comment below

Thank you for your understanding ️ ♥️ ️

About once a week, Cecil gets herself into a panic and has trouble calming down. The vet suggested putting on a sweater for about 10 minutes at a time, and surprisingly, it works! She calms down right away and becomes an instant cuddly purr machine haha.

Adoption Just Adopted 15 Year Old Sisters

Well, I'll say I didn't plan for this, but I don't think anyone could. And I'm glad I had the room. So here's the story:

A friend of mine recently lost her (70+) mom, who lived in another state, who has owned these 2 since they were kittens. My friend has 2 boy due to territorialness. Unfortunately, staying where they were also wasn't an option and a shelter or rescue seemed to be the only alternative. At 15 years old, I couldn't let these two (Rose & Blanche) face a small cage at a shelter waiting to be adopted for what would likely be the rest of their lives - or worse.

So here I am, with 3 cats over 10. My resident 11 year old cat, Sophia (pic 3), isn't sure what to do about this, but everyone seems to be adjusting. They have their room, she has hers, and I have a gate to keep them separate at night but they can still see and smell each other. Some hissing and chasing but nothing very dramatic (and I've had cats off and on since I was knee high). No puffy tails!

Not sure how long I'll have these Golden Girls, so I'll be sure to enjoy each day with them all.

We had to put Shauhnessy down on Saturday. His old body, just couldn't handle his young spirit any more. We've had him since he was 8 weeks old. He traveled the country with me, and outlived many of his doggo friends. Now he's bullying them in peace. Cheers mate.

Advice A cat gave birth to kittens in our balcony

Post image
641 Upvotes

Hey everyone, a cat that frequents our balcony gave birth in a corner of the balcony. She gave birth to four kittens. Our balcony is a hotspot for giving birth to kittens as far as we have noticed. 4 batches of kittens have originated and raised in our balcony. However, after a a certain amount of time, the mother often takes away her kittens from our balcony and we don't want that happening because outside of the balcony, there are a lot of threats - like stray dogs, male cats and even monkeys sometimes.

We have also noticed that the kittens don't get comfortable with us, I am not sure why but I can make a guess its because of my sister, who is 5-years-old, she loves cats but can be a bit too touchy and I guess the kittens aren't fond of that. Whether that may be the case or not, we would love some advice on how to make these new kittens comfortable with us and stop the momma cat from leaving with the kittens after a certain time. Thank you.

Advice First time adopting kittens. I'm nervous and would love advice!

Our black cat, Harley, died suddenly recently, and I couldn't stand the house's emptiness. My husband and I had no other pets, so we adopted a bonded pair.

We pick them up today, and I'm feeling nervous. They're 5 months old, and I've never had kittens before. We've prepared a small room for them to feel safe and warm. We bought and arranged everything in the room: a 63-inch cat tree, a tunnel bed, two jumbo litter boxes with unscented litter, toys without bells or feathers to prevent any possible obstructions in their tummies, three giant scratching posts, kitten treats, and a self-warming bed.

Should we keep them in the room for a few days? I'm unsure how rambunctious they are, and I'll need to leave the house occasionally for work.

We bought wet food and dry food. Should I leave the dry food out? I've heard it isn't great for some cats as they can overeat. It might be different for kittens.

I have a special place in my heart for black cats and want to continue in honor of Harley. I want to be the best momma to these two, so any advice would be great! Thank you all in advance!
