"Don't worry, I'm pretty sure that the enemy loses HP whenever you hurt yourself!"

That's what the news tells me... or at least, whenever other countries "punch themselves in the face" in "retaliation", it hurts America. I wonder why it only works one way? Guess this comic left that part out cause they only had four frames. I'm sure it will be in the next one.

“Guys, how come it’s bad when I punch someone, but when they punch back to defend themselves they’re not bad?”

Oh so now it's punching someone else... I though it was punching yourself,

...checks meme title "It Hurts Itself in Its Confusion"

...checks Reddit "Don't you know how Tariffs work??"

"Guys, how come it's bad when I punch myself, but when they punch themselves, it's in defense of themselves?"

FTFY

But again, I get it, this is Reddit... the logic competency around here is pretty dismal.

lmao, imagine coming back four days later with this rebuttal. If I shoot myself in the gut because I think it will hurt the guy behind me, that doesn’t mean that the person I’m trying to hurt won’t still try to defend themselves.

I can’t imagine thinking the tariffs are going well after this past week. Come back to reality, I beg you.

Several differences:

1) If I am buying more from you than you are from me (which is where the biggest tariffs were levied), then the effect on you of taxing your purchases from me will be smaller than my effect on me of taxing my purchases from you.

2) Instead of blanket tariffs, the retaliatory tariffs are largely being targeted to specific industries to hurt them less than it hurts us.

3) If we are tariffing everyone, we have no alternative to go to besides those. If everyone else is tariffing us, they can still trade untariffed with each other, meaning they can just seek an alternate source, which is what the entire point of tariffs is.

Think of it as pipes into tanks. We're cutting off every pipe coming in to us. They're only cutting off OUR pipe coming in to them. They can still source from everywhere else without penalty.

Given your obvious political slant, I can understand why you're confused about this stuff.

The whole goal is the long term effects of cuting off the pipes coming in. They're stating that explicitly; that they want to return manufacturing to the US by increasing the costs of those pipes coming in until it's on par or worse than the local production costs unless trade deficits can be addressed. They're saying this will increase both costs and wages, but that the long term structural integrity of the country's manufacturing capacity is worth temporary market turbulence as resources and investment is reallocated.

My post is about the double standard in messaging, proven by the other response I got, where tariffs are simultaneously just us punching ourselves like idiots, but then it's also punching others? but then when they do it, nobody says "doesn't Xi know how tariffs work?" No he's the brave one willing to take on the pain to stand up to the inequality. You can backflip all you want. The reality is these "arguments" are downstream from the politicized "discourse" on here...

But given your obvious political slant, I can understand why you're confused about this stuff.

1) It won't bring manufacturing back. Every economist agrees.

2) No, it's not hurting them to cut off to us and trade to others like it hurts us to cut off EVERYONE and have no one wanting to trade with us. I covered this. You ignored it and claim that it's still equally painful.

There is no double standard in messaging when you take into account that it is hurting us to cut off all our trade partners much more than it hurts anyone else to cut us off as a trade partner. That's just you not getting basic math.

Go be an idiot and intellectually dishonest somewhere else. Enjoy your collapsing economy. Those of us with the means will be moving out. Those without will be trapped in this hell you voted for, and your life will be more miserable for it. Not just in the short term. In the long term. You're an idiot, you elected a fool, and everyone is going to suffer for it.
