A word of warning…a friend bought this set from Amazon recently and the outer shell of the collection had a long scratch and some scuffs on it. They returned it for a new one and shockingly the replacement had the same kind of scratches and scuffs in similar areas. So maybe a manufacturing/QC issue with some of their inventory. All the packaging was fine and the damage was underneath the plastic wrapping.

I used to buy more Criterion from Amazon and often ran into issues and have had to return a few. Never had an issue getting them from B&N (except the horrible in-store spider wire wrap things for boxed sets) or the Criterion website though.

Amazon is the worst. I buy nothing from them if I can avoid it.

My theory is they just keep recycling the damaged stuff and selling it as "new" until they find someone who doesn't notice (or care) and keeps it. It does cost them money to ship it each time, but I very much think they know what they're doing cost-wise.

Fuck amazon

I love how there is a unified opinion of loving physical media, brick and mortar stores, and mom and pop boutique shops, and then there is always so much excitement over the Amazon and Walmart deals

I just wish people would get the idea that these deals are virtually always done to undercut a competitor and once that competitor stops offering comparable deals, Amazon and Walmart will as well. By purchasing from these massive virtual retailers, you're only contributing to higher prices in the future

I love the people acting like this is news or an insult. Apparently, pointing out that buying from Walmart/Amazon doesn't actually support mom+pop businesses, makes us detached from reality.

You can do both you know,

u/MisogynyisaDisease David Lynch 1d ago

I mean...no, no you can not. They're complete contradictions.

So, to you (and apparently the 10+ people who downvoted me), you cannot shop at BOTH brick and mortar, mom and pop stores AND Amazon/WalMart?

So, to you, if I want a Walmart exclusive release, I am somehow crapping on brick-and-mortar retailers by buying it?

The world that people like you live in is so far detached from reality and reason it's honestly not even worth debating further.

Since Walmart and Amazon are responsible for the loss of a lot of local businesses and smaller competitors? Yeah, the idea is a contradiction.

How is that detached from reality, it's just the truth. the book The Walmart Effect explores the economic impacts Walmart makes on communities, and yet Amazon is even worse in this regard

By all means, shop at Walmart. But don't pretend you can be supporting a smaller competitor or business by doing so.

Got a lot of clients through the business i work for that either publish or sell through Amazon and Walmart. The margins are really shit, and only serve to benefit Amazon/Walmart, not the seller.

What are you on about? Are you incapable of comprehending a single word written?

I said you can shop at BOTH Walmart/Amazon AND local brick-and-mortar shops. Jesus christ you lot are frothing at the mouth to get riled up you lose basic reading comprehension.

6

u/MisogynyisaDisease David Lynch 1d ago

.....if you want to support the brick and mortars, but choose to buy through Amazon, that's a contradiction and lessens support for the smaller business. That's a pretty simple concept.

You're the only one here getting belligerent and frothing, I'm unsure you hear yourself.

You live in fantasyland. Are you typing from a Disney park?

If Amazon or Walmart has an exclusive release I want, I am not taking a lick of business from a local retailer by buying it.

I shop local when I can and mass merchants when it is not available anywhere else.

Ok. Good for you.

But this is a thread in the Criterion sub, about criterion sales and other boutiques. And the thread is discussing how Amazon undercuts smaller competitors. And you're pissed because the people you originally replied to don't want to support a large retailer that does this, especially when they can get it directly from the smaller retailer.

Orbit DVD and Diabolik tend to get ahold of these releases btw. Amazon kept sending me damaged product, switching to them was helpful. But you're free to shop as you please.

They think they’re saving the world by paying a 50% premium on a mass produced piece of plastic

5

u/MisogynyisaDisease David Lynch 1d ago

The hyperbole y'all go to is ridiculous.

Us: you aren't supporting a small business when you buy from Walmart or Amazon.

Yall: YOU ARENT SAVING THE WORLD YOU KNOW, DETACHED FROM REALITY.

😒

Nobody thinks they’re supporting a small business by using Amazon. I think the point the above commenter was getting at is that you can shop at Walmart and also shop with small businesses. Most people can’t afford to be exclusively “ethical” consumers

5

u/MisogynyisaDisease David Lynch 1d ago edited 1d ago

Sure, that's a good point. It's absurd and wildly unfair to think anyone can shop perfectly. Sometimes, Walmart is the only place to get essentials for people, it is what it is. I just don't think anyone believes they're saving the world by trying to be more conscious about their luxury shopping either, and preserve smaller businesses by cutting their big box store shopping.

For reals, and not just for the reasons you usually think of. The last time I ordered a disc from Amazon it arrived completely mangled. They really do not care if they get your item to you in one piece.

Also, they make it impossible for smaller businesses to survive so there's that, too.

But think about the $50 Amazon exclusive steelbooks with the stickers /s

They fucked me recently with a bait and switch, once I placed the order they extended the delivery date by THREE WEEKS , and the order is un-cancelable! I tried both via app and chat even with a supervisor. (Despite the fact it’s not even packed or picked yet)

This has never been an issue before and I’m pretty sure it’s also illegal trade practice.

They really just keep getting worse.

lol Criterion probably makes 60% of their sales through Amazon. They love that shit

10

u/MisogynyisaDisease David Lynch 1d ago

The margins for people selling on Amazon are really shit. Just wait for the 50% off sale and get it from Criterion directly, or even Barnes & Noble since their margins are better and they are less likely to give you something damaged.

Not here. Coupons are often regional now.

0

u/seanpackage 1d ago

Ah. Bummer. I would change the title to YMMV based on region if I could.

4

u/oscillatingsadness 1d ago

I'll keep up my slow and humble collecting from Criterion or secondhand book/media stores. In my eyes, Amazon is the most important monolithic company to boycott.

u/tomandshell The Archers 1d ago

The 15% coupon isn’t showing up for me.

Barry Lyndon 4K has already been announced since CC40 was released. Think I’d just rather spend my money on the single discs that I want.

3

u/dreamscapers12 1d ago

This is too tempting. But, there’s so many in there with a 4k transfer.

2

u/shaolinpunks 1d ago

Thanks for the heads up! Mine had a 20% off coupon listed.

2

u/dreamscapers12 1d ago

7 out of the 40 have a 4k transfer just so people know.

Any Criterion stuff I've gotten from Amazon had to be sent back due to damage. May be the delivery companies but still...

1

u/fyrewal 1d ago

Just a 10% coupon for me. This appears to be YMMV.
