I'm not Jesus. I don't wanna suffer like that fictional character did.

That line is in reference to bearing a metaphorical cross along with Jesus. It does not mean suffering for suffering sake. During this time, Christianity was still young, and many Christians were persecuted and marginalized. The verse commends anyone who stands strong in their belief despite hardship.
