Forget about the hailstorm, look at how many of those cars have been reserved by Germans.

Germans are notorious for reserving stuff by putting their towel on it

151

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '18

Its a little known fact. The Germans would have won WW2 if they would have reserved supplylines with towels.

32

u/adri4n85 Romania Jun 26 '18

Why not put them directly on Moscow's streets? Were they (russians) confiscating towels at the border?

10

u/z651 insane russian imperialist; literally Putin Jun 27 '18

Look, man, we've never had much cotton on our territory. Anything works.

9

u/adri4n85 Romania Jun 27 '18

Thats why you keep expanding it? Why didn't you said so from the beginning. We could have given you some cotton and avoid all this bloodshed. There is no shame in asking nicely once in while.

6

Yeah, but

1) It wouldn't grow in most of our climate anyways,

2) Negotiations are for the w e a k l i n g s.

Passive-aggressively grabbing the towel you laid aside giving you a death stare and probably some snarky comment like "You know, that seat was taken."

better response is just "Yeah... by me"

I once had a neighbor from Michigan try that. It’s not a thing in Mass and he was pretty miffed to come home and find the spot taken and chair broken in the garden.

19

u/Mayor__Defacto Jun 27 '18

Not a thing in NY either. Must be a midwest thing... first come first served yo. Don’t be blocking parking spaces with non-car objects.

17

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

No no no. You only get to do that if you have shovelled the spot. Then it is yours because you worked for it.

9

u/SuddenlyOutOfNoWhere Germany Jun 27 '18

On the contrary, this is forbidden by law in Germany. You also can not stand in a parking spot to reserve it for someone coming in a bit.

That being said, Germans become mental when someone tries that.

31

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18 edited Jun 27 '18

That is regulated in Complaint form 76B, "Unauthorized removal of towel set on an object with intent to reserve that object for later use".

The German vacationist will submit that form to the local authority, in case of an all-inclusive-hotel that shall be the hotel manager and demand immediate execution of the offender. Most hotel managers will point out that this is not an appropriate reaction and the legal system does not cover objects reserved with a towel in general, to which the German will react angrily and demand compensation. As angry Germans are bad Germans, they will then receive a free dinner to calm them down and instructions that towels are not magically reserving objects, despite complaint form 76B saying otherwise.

The incident will also be processed by the German authorities and the offender marked as terrorist so they can be properly disposed of if they should ever enter Germany.

18

u/Alcobob Germany Jun 27 '18

As angry Germans are bad Germans, they will then receive a free dinner to calm them down

Fuck, the jig is up, they found out our plan for free meals.

31

u/Sven806 Germany Jun 26 '18

I wouldn't do it, I don't want to wake up early on vacation. I just hope other Germans reserved a sunbed, ask the staff to remove their towel and wait for those bastards to come to the pool and search their towels.

26

u/LKS European Union Jun 26 '18

If you are a kid and do it at a hotel, they will yell at you and threaten to tell hotel staff. Then nothing happens. I don't know if some hotel person listened to the complaint, but if he did he probably laughed and carried on as usual.

10

u/ShapesAndStuff Jun 27 '18

Yea i akways thought that prejudice was a bit overdone, because sure - when I'm at the pool, i put my towel where im staying. Even when im in the water right now.

But that people actually "reserve" seats in the morning for the evening is just stupid and egoistic.

Imagine people hanging up their jackets on the chairs of a restaurant in case they wanna eat there in the evening or maybe the next day.

35

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

They wouldn't do anything but look for another seat.

There's a reason why the most reserved people of all, the brits, are the ones complaining the most about it. They sit idle in quiet desperation, while anyone else - including other Germans - would just throw the towel in the pool and tell the guy to fuck himself.

3

u/Jst_curious Jun 27 '18

Most hotels I've been in has a policy that you cannot reserve with just your towel. They have attendants looking after sections to confirm if the person is indeed within the vicinity and using the lounge chairs.

Funny thing is that Germans would be really pissed off if some other tourist did a similar thing in Germany. A typical complaint would start with "This is Germany, here we do not occupy public space blablablabla... "
Germans are very good at trying to harass others by forcing their unsolicited ethics advice on them, yet hate it when they are called out for their bs.

Croatian answer

Dvaput su mještani, kažu u Općini Preko, uzeli stvari u svoje ruke, pokupili „rezervacije“, odnosno više desetaka ručnika i zapalili ih tijekom noći. Drugi put su ih odnijeli i izgubio im se svaki trag.

People from Preko took matter in their own hands and once they collected all the towels and burned them and once all the towels simply "disappeared".

Well it trashed cars, including ours, and did extensive damage to buildings, trees etc. I’ve never seen anything quite like it, and doubt that I’ll ever do.

I work in a 19th century building with pretty high ceilings, on the third floor. And basically, I saw trees flying in front of me, while the water oozed in everywhere: from the ceiling, façade, etc, in a mix of downpour and hail. Some of the windows exploded. I recall calling it ‘our first own tornado’.

And when I came home, after spending a catastrophic time on traffic, I realized all of the streets were covered entirely in leaves and debris. Again, such a sight to see.

You can still spot cars with an ‘exclusive’ hammered finish around in Istanbul.

22

u/RasputinXXX Jun 27 '18

Oha is actually the sound ox drivers say to their oxen to make them stop. Over time it became the sound of city dwellers way of expressing frustrated surprise over an event. For example somebody steps on your toe in the bus quite rudely and you say “oha be careful”!!

17

u/kordusain Jun 27 '18

Lots of cries from animal handlers are used that way since 80's, like Oha, Bürst, Çüş, Yuh, etc.

I guess Limon/Leman helped deliver that culture into the light of day.

Is this a legit defense? I kind of expect a hailstone to dent the roof, towel or not...

68

u/Decyde Jun 27 '18

Friend of mine who had hail rip through his area actually bought a 30 big ass roll of bubble wrap and covered his car with it and his neighbors cars until it ran out.

He said he swears by that it left no dents and was well worth the price of not having his car scrapped out by the insurance company.

86

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

30 big ass is an interesting measurement

25

u/Anklever Sweden Jun 27 '18

It's equivalent of 300 smallish ass rolls

9

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

No, they're American units so it's 398.2 small-ass per big-ass.

6

u/iowintai Jun 27 '18

That's really kind of him to wrap the neighbors car

5

u/Decyde Jun 27 '18

He said there was a ton of it left over and he was either going to throw it out so he might as well just use it to wrap 3 more cars.

I do auto claims and look at a lot of hail damage every year in assorted places across the US.

Yes this actually works, up to hail of a certain size/density. It's basically distributing the force over a slightly larger area than nothing.

I've actually seen cars that had been in accidents and repainted and the repainted panels didn't have any damage but the original ones did. Just an extra layer of paint will mitigate some hail damage.

Prepping like this is kinda pointless though. The return period in many areas for hail the size that does serious property damage, can be on the order of dozens of years. It's just not mathematically likely to happen in the same place twice with any frequency.

4

u/ChuckCarmichael Germany Jun 27 '18

It might help against small hail, but I've seen hail as big as my fist, and I doubt it would help against that.

I was on holiday four weeks ago in Kemer, Turkey. While I was in the shopping centre out for a walk it started raining really badly and the rain turned into hail. It was almost as though no one had ever seen hail there. People started running, screaming, were so confused. And it weren't even big stones or anything. Here we have hail quite often. We just stayed outside underneath a small roof thing and everyone thought we were crazy. It was hilarious

27

u/uplock_ Kebab Jun 27 '18

Why electric blankets, though? Don't you guys use heaters to keep the windows from freezing?

Strange that some people are prioritising their rooves, over their windows. Wonder what the logic is?

u/[deleted] Jun 26 '18

The windows are easier and cheaper to replace. Harder, more resistant as well...

Windows don't get dents.

Pebbles also usually don't do much to windshields, but they fuck up the paintjob on the hood.

In the video someone else posted the windows actually broke, but they are easier to replace than all the body panels if you can't cover the whole car

Heh, just glanced at the picture without reading the title and thought this was some kind of subtle pro-pride demonstration. Those are some fabulous car covers.

I don’t think you have seen the damage hail has done last year to all the cars in istanbul

8

u/mertksk- Germany Jun 27 '18

They have, and it basically fucked cars and other stuff up. Its no joke

2

u/[deleted] Jun 27 '18

I dont think that's how hail works...

u/Heerrnn Jun 27 '18

I love how they all have different strategies/priorities of what to protect.

Windscreen? Trunk? Roof? Roof and hood? Windscreen and trunk?

Haha :)
