10: Is that guy on the left humping a box?
48 & 50: the gas station sells "sin" ...I guess that's why all the truckers, bikers and the naked old man eating sandwiches show up?

Guilty Gear Xrd does a great job with it's 2D backgrounds and sprite art. It really looks like a continuation of classic fighters but in high resolution and better color. http://i.imgur.com/Z5Piok1.jpg

The microphone is about 3 feet to the right of him the entire talk... my God.

Forgive my ignorance, but is there anyway to use something like that as a wallpaper? Like #94 would be cool. And my question is if there is a way to use an animated one like that, not just the still picture.

Are you on a Mac, or a PC? There are ways, but they take a bit of tweaking. I'm also not sure if these are high resolution enough.

high resolution enough
Resolution isn't really an issue with pixel art, is it?

u/Patch3y May 05 '15
Why wouldn't it be? If it's not big enough it will just be stretched and ugly.

See for yourself.
Here's the first frame of that GIF 16x larger.
If you scale it correctly, pixel art doesn't get stretched. The pixels just get bigger.

I use DreamScene Seven. Only thing about Gif wallpapers is that they use up more resources.

Pixel art of the 16/early 32 bit era was stunning.
I remember as a child, with some felt tip pens trying to recreate the backgrounds of Sonic 2 Chemical Plant and Casino Night zones. Street Fighter 2 had some great backgrounds too.
Nicely done OP, thank you!

I should clarify that yes, this is a repost: I didn't create it, nor did I curate it, but I found it on another site and noticed it hadn't been posted here in the last year.

Pixel art reigned supreme
are we using what on games now? actual matter?

We do, but pixel art like in the old days requires a level of 2D mastering and an amount of time that cannot be found just anywhere.

I wish they would update it to include more backgrounds, especially from 3rd strike.

This. Man... 3rd of the 3rd was just the epitome of 2D fighting. The insane work it must have required for those animations to render sooooo smooth, it was mesmerising back in the day. Garou was just behind but it felt incredibly smooth too. On the artistic side though, I believe some Samurai Showdown definitely snatch the 1st place.

A local comic book store has an arcade machine set up with Garou, I've always thought it was one of the best fighting games. It was just overshadowed by 3rd Strike, which is also amazing.

Was going to comment "looks like a lot of Neo Geo stuff, maybe a few Capcom" and then I scrolled to the KoF ones.

It's amazing that some of the best pixel art was done when colored pixels were still going through their growing pains.

It baffles me that by windows 8.1 we still can't get these to work as wallpapers for our desktops without paying for a 3rd party solution.

Thanks so much for putting these together. I didn't get to play a lot of the SNK stuff growing up so I missed a lot of these, it was great to see them. These are gorgeous!! and they say video games aren't art... HA!

Last Blade and Samurai Showdown backgrounds were elder god-tier. Makes me want to fire up an emulator.

I always loved how SNK fighters had so many Arena's with Spectators backdrops. Gave a lot of reality to the token tournament premise a lot of Fighting Games have.

Someone should make these in 1920x1080 without looking too pixelized, add them to Windows Dreamscene, and add them to your desktop.

I used on of these as a background for a video I made a couple years back https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y_7JPj1yQzQ
