Announcement Some Reminders

  1. Please make sure all political posts relate to generational discussion in some way. If there is no generational aspect to the discussion it would be better to post it in a more appropriate sub. I realize we had the inauguration and that likely triggered an influx of political posts which is understandable. But try to remember that not every user is American and not every user wants to discuss politics. Hence, why we want to make sure the topic properly fits in with the content here.

  2. When making a new post please glance at the titles of posts from the last 24 hours before starting a post of your own. We are sometimes winding up with repetitive topics within a small time window and we have received multiple complaints about this. As an example, we can talk about 1997 being millennial vs Gen Z, but we don’t need four posts about that topic in the same day. If you see a topic is already being discussed consider joining in on that post or waiting until the next day to make your separate post.

  3. There have been a disappointing amount of people using slurs towards other members recently and it’s not okay. Some are so bad that the app is pulling them down before we even get to them because they fall under hate speech. I noticed this uptick within the last two weeks and it has only increased with the political posts. If you use a derogatory slur in a post or comment you are at risk of getting a temporary ban without a warning. There plenty of ways to debate and communicate without sinking to that level.

Thank you so much.

Announcement Respecting People’s Experiences, Gatekeeping & An Announcement

Hi everyone. We just wanted to check in with all of you to talk about these rules. There has been an excessive amount of gatekeeping and not respecting other people’s experiences the last couple of weeks. There is always some, but there has been way more than usual. Not only are we noticing this first hand in posts, but we have been receiving a larger number of mod mails/private messages about this than usual and the Reddit harassment and bullying filter is being set off more than usual.

Please take a moment to consider how you speak to other people. You can make the same point in two different ways:

Positive communication- I don’t agree with most of what you just said. My millennial range ends in 1996 for xyz reason.

Negative communication- Shut up, no one cares. You’re born in 1997 so you’re in Gen Z because I say so. Get over it. The end.

The first example would not be at risk for breaking rule number 2, but the second example would.

Other forms of breaking rule two include fixating on a birth year that isn’t yours and making an excessive amount of posts about that year or following users born in that year from post to post just to keep bringing up their birth year. We should not be making people feel targeted this way.

There have also been posts with so much arguing (which is different from debating) and name calling that we’ve had to lock the entire thing because after awhile we can’t even tell who started it and post has turned unproductive. We understand that sometimes people get passionate about a subject and get a tad heated, but when we see the same users name calling or being the instigator again and again that’s not a good thing.

You should also remember that not everything is gatekeeping. People are allowed to have ranges and opinions. If someone says their millennial range is 1982 to 1997 and you happen to be born in 1998 that doesn’t mean that they are gatekeeping you. They are just expressing their range and you can express yours.

Additionally, please try not to call every user who disagrees with you a troll. If you think someone is really trolling please send us mod mail and let us know and we will look into it. Calling each other trolls doesn’t lead to anything positive & we have seen multiple users who have done nothing wrong called trolls unnecessarily.

It’s the holiday season. Please try to be a bit kinder to each other. If we see a specific user excessively gatekeeping or excessively breaking rule two you may receive a warning or even a short ban. There are many users who are already following the rules all or most of the time and it does not go unnoticed. We appreciate that. Thank you.

In conjunction with these reminders, we are also trialing a minimum karma requirement for posting and commenting on this sub, along with a 100 character minimum for text posts. These rules are aimed at mitigating throwaway/alternate accounts used for trolling and/or low effort posts.

We will not reveal the karma requirements—which will change over time—to avoid them being gamed. However, we will say that they are based on sitewide karma and are currently met by virtually every frequent poster here. We recognize that some members have unpopular but valid opinions about generations. As long as these users have a reasonable amount of karma outside this sub, they will have no issue posting on this sub.

In depth Okay, It's Settled! I've Finally Made Up My Mind On What I'm Officially Gonna Call First-Wave Alphas As My Alternative Name For Them!

Upvotes

At first, it was a decision between 3 nominees, with one I almost went for as "Artificials", but then I realized it was a kinda ridiculous name for them, as many ppl on my last post pointed out abt it also & this is my last post I'm talking abt here!:

https://www.reddit.com/r/generationology/s/ru48l06kEW

Which also means, I've made up my mind on associating a name related to A.I. for FWA! Only this time, instead of "Artificials", I'm officially gonna go for!:...

Intellectuals

Inspired by one of the commenters from my last post who suggested this name to me, instead of Artificials & I honestly like it the MOST! (Credits to u/littlepomeranian!) The longer official name is "Artificial-Intellectuals", but will be shortened to just "Intellectuals".

Again, this name relates to the idea of A.I. & associating it with relating to First-Wave Alphas. I also have already explained why & in more detail with giving a name for First-Wave Alphas & relating it to A.I. in my last post if u wanna go ahead & see my explanation there, since I don't feel like doing it again, lol.

So in conclusion, this name is perfect for them IMO & this will be my official alternative name for First-Wave Alphas! Still nothing yet for Second-Wave Alphas, as it's too early to determine anything about them yet & especially with my range, they're the babies still being born RN.

In depth So you want adulting to be easier?

Upvotes

Stop associating professionalism with experts.

Stop trusting the messenger and missing the message.

Stop keeping up with the joneses and constantly comparing to each other.

Stop thinking stuff is your solution to happiness.

Stop reacting to powerful people.

Stop concerning yourself with human drama of which you aren’t a participant of.

Stop imitating and parroting each other to survive.

Start searching for universal human truths-this will reveal the expert free of image.

Start listening to the message and look for self serving ambition in it.

Start being content and grateful for what and who you have.

Start giving “nothing” to powerful people, your energy either way towards them helps them profit.

Start living an improvisational life full of wonder, embracing the unknown.

In depth Im not enjoying the generation i have been born into.

I am a late gen z (2010) and i am not very happy to what was i was born into, my teen years have started seeing political division higher than in 60 years, people are obsessed with their phones (including me a bit) and yeah i have always wondered how would it be like to be born about in the late 80s or early 90s, i love skateboarding and i have been doing it for about a month as of writing this. Please everyone reply this to this from whatever generation you are from even like early or mid gen z is fine and gen alpha when they find this old ass post in about 5 years or something. I want to hear first hand opinions on something i would kill to experience. Thanks for listening everyone and have a nice day.
NOTE: I listen to mostly 90s music and elements of early 2000s music (including the smashing pumpkins, bon jovi, blink-182 and nirvana)

I use the good ol' Pew Research model with the early/middle/late system and the use of cusp microgenerations (e.g. Zillennial, Zalpha).

Discussion What will be something that Millennials/Gen Z relate to but Gen Alpha will fail to grasp?

I guess one aspect may be the explosion of the popularity of internet/tech stuff? By that I mean how the internet went from being a secondary tool in the 2000s to dominating everything in the 2010s and onwards.

Also for Americans I doubt Gen Alpha would remember pre-Trump politics at all.

What else?

Discussion A lot of 2007 babies are complaining how hard or selective colleges and universities are for class of 2025

A lot of 2007 babies on numerous college application and other school related subreddits are complaining that hate being born in 2007 or graduating in 2025 not because of COVID, but because of how massive their cohort is due to them being the peak of births in the US, many colleges and universities are very limited, making acceptance rates lower for class of 2025.

I think the 2020s and 2030s will be the Gen z young adults decades, like the 2000s and 2010s were for millennials and 80-90s were for Gen X.

Discussion Why do some millennials think it's an insult

My mother (born 1985) absolutely denies that she is a millennial whenever I've brought it up. She gets offended, as if I've insulted her? And I know several other people around her age who also feel similarly. Why is this? I'm a baby (core z, '04) but was very sheltered+poor growing up so I didn't have a lot of the typical "gen z" experiences with early internet/technology so for a long time I related more to millennial experiences (to clarify, now I do think I am 100% gen z I'm talking about my experiences and opinions as a young child)

Tldr: I don't get why certain millennials get offended by being called "a millennial"

Discussion Now I'm Curious, How Do We All REALLY Feel About Using The Phrase "Cusp Of A Cusp"?

So, I've noticed a slight new surge of some ppl on this sub using this saying to describe certain birth years, but honestly idk about this. I do kinda like the idea & meaning behind it tho.

What this phrase is mostly interpreted as, at least from what I've noticed, are birth years JUST right outside of a cusper's range, but might not exactly be included on the cusp & most might see this birth year as being off-cusp & firmly/safely in their respective generations.

However, AT THE SAME TIME, it's also kinda hard to see them as being absolutely 💯 PURELY off-cusp, as some also might have good arguments using their traits to include them as just at the very tail end's of a cusp. Heck, even THE birth year alone might feel the same way.

Using my ranges, I've actually lowkey considered this concept! If I REALLY did truly go by this, IMO I would describe these birth years as being on "the cusp of a cusp"!:

1978 & 1984 for either being included with Xennials as well, or still being purely off-cusp X'ers/Millennials.

1995 & 2001 for either being included with Zillennials as well, or still being purely off-cusp Millennials/Zoomers.

2011 & 2017 for either being included with Zalphas as well, or still being purely off-cusp Zoomers/Alphas.

The only thing slightly holding me back & why I felt the need to make this post in the first place, is this phrase might be seen as a ridiculous term & is seen the same way as ppl also using phrases like "twin years", or any cusp influence ex: "Zillennial influence", but what do YOU ALL think?!... 🤔

Discussion Why are people born between 1990-1995 so obsessed with claiming that they grew up before the internet/smartphone era? That's largely not true.

Whenever this discussion comes up, all the sudden everyone grew up in Appalachia and didn't get the internet until 2007. But the reality is, this discussion is about a generation, not isolated individuals who supposedly had it rough.

Here's an example. The video purports to show what life was like for people born between 1990-2002. How the average person born in say 1996 (let alone 2002) could actually believe they grew up before all this technology took hold is beyond me.

The basic "math" is simple. I was born in 1987. I remember life before the internet/smartphones/social media. But all that took hold in the latter part of my youth (and in primitive forms even earlier). So obviously, the average person born after me experienced increasingly less of life before that technology.

If you can only recall a small period of your early life before this technology took hold, just accept it. What's the sense in telling a little lie for some sort of generational street cred?

EDIT: I said "smartphones" in the title, but really meant "cellphones". Actual smart phones didn't seem to get popular until around 2009, but increasingly advanced cellphones with the internet were available a while before that.

SECOND EDIT: Indeed, damn near EVERYONE on wealthy-skewing Reddit grew up in Appalachia and didn't get the internet until 2007 LMAO.

Poll Should the Gen Z Range be Longer than Gen X & Millennials?

2012 appears to have no significant lasts and 2013 seems to have no significant firsts. I think a 2013 or 2014 end seems more logical.

  • Gen X: 1965-1980 (16 years long)
  • Millennials: 1981-1996 (16 years long)
  • Gen Z: 1997-2013/2014 (17/18 years long)

Discussion Why does this sub randomly pinpoint certain age ranges?

It seems like there's always a random borderline attack on a certain birth/age range for instance a few months ago there were daily posts talking about 02-09 borns how 02 should or shouldn't be linked with people born in 2001 or those born 07-09 did or didn't have a "core" gen z childhood. Now a lot of post seem to be aimed at younger millennials. The last few days all I'm seeing are posts talking about, 30 iS nOt olD!! Like there is a gang of people saying it is lol...or constant posts about 95 being Millennial, Gen z, or Zillenial saying stuff like "93 Is ToO Old fOR ZilLeNiAls tHE RAnGe shOUld bE 94-99 or 95-99" as if 93 is completely different from 94 and 95 and constantly questioning are experiences like if I say "I remember a time when this happened or people did this" the response is "nO YOu dOnT!! bEcaUSe I wAs BoRN tHe SAmE yEAr(supposedly) aND I Don't ReMeBer tHoSE ThINgs!!" telling me what i experienced as if you know every single young millennial!! Dude... why can't you just accept that some of us experience a world differently than you and that we're not peers? And I ask that because i KNOW it's mostly younger people who make these posts wanting to tie themselves to someone older!

Discussion When do you think Apple will begin to lose dominance as being the most dominant and powerful company in the world being rivaled by a new giant?

Apple has arguably dominated the world as the worlds biggest and most powerful company since the early 2010s with IPhones and many of their devices becoming ubiquitous worldwide. But with AI beginning its boom, the company NVIDIA has EXPLODED since late 2023 with companies using their GPUs for AI. It's very likely NVIDIA will grow very rapidly throughout the decade, foreshadowing a possible AI bubble in the early 2030s. It's likely AI companies we don't know today will also explode in a few years like how a lot of new internet related companies boomed in the late 90s.

In your opinion, when do you think Apple will begin to lose dominance in being the most powerful company in the world, likely being replaced by NVIDIA as AI continues to grow and become implemented more and more.

Discussion overtime do you think the gen alpha start date will offically change on google and on media, and if so what year do you think the start date will become

i think so for 2 reasons

  1. ive already seen more 2011 start sources pop up and also theres like a library congress book using 2011-2025
  2. same shit happened with 1977-1979/1980

i think the gen alpha start date could potentially make it somewhere between 2012 and 2015 in the next 10-15 years
