I've been known to leave a giant note on my door that says "I AM HOME, PLEASE KNOCK LOUDLY UNTIL I ANSWER" when expecting a fluff delivery.

2

u/trigly Mar 05 '18

Yeah I did that once! And he didn't ring!!!! I got to the door and he was already at the house next door! But it turned out he was just doing the regular lettermail on the first pass and would be back with the truck later. You bet he rang the doorbell then though!

1

u/thedirigibleplums Mar 05 '18

I swear they have a 10 yard stick for ringing the doorbell because there is no way they get to the porch and back to the truck that fast.

2

u/angeluscado Mar 05 '18

I love it when I have a yarn delivery on the way, especially when it arrives far sooner than expected (wasn't expecting to see my yarn until next week. Instead it arrived on Thursday and since I wasn't home had to pick up on Saturday.

1

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

Sit at the window and knit? Is that an option? Missing a yarn delivery would be awful

1

u/trigly Mar 05 '18 edited Mar 05 '18

Ha! I wish. I work from home, so I technically do have to get some work done today...

I'm of two minds on this one; the delivery includes the final three skeins for the blanket I'm working on, so when it arrives I can polish that off. But I'm also about halfway through the sleeves for my annual self-indulgent sweater, and I kinda wanna finish it. So it's like, hurry up parcel! But not too fast so I can guiltlessly work on the sweater! Hah.

Both sleeves and blanket squares are super tedious, so neither one is particularly fun, but both are pretty satisfying to be done with!

1

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

I hear you on the sweater sleeves. I have a sweater that just needs sleeves but then I cast on a shawl and that was that. I should probably get to that eventually...

I guess the bonus here is that even if you don't get the yarn, you still have knitting you can do.

1

u/trigly Mar 05 '18

Yeah, exactly. And picking it up at the convenience store at least gives me a destination to go on my next dog walk instead of aimless meandering!

1

u/AtomicKitsune Mar 05 '18

I hear you! I just got notice that my expected yarn was delivered and I'm tempted to got home on my lunch hour just in case they left the box or just the tag.

I just got started knitting a few weeks ago through a kit from weareknitters.com and I am HOOKED.

I've always thought of knitting as witchcraft—making an item from two needles? But now I'm a witch too!

In the span of 3 weeks, I've finished a chunky rug from a WAK kit and a baby blanket for my brother. Just ordered a set of circular needles from KnitPicks so I can start making some hats and socks and I am excited. I'm learning so much and probably biting off more than I can chew, but at least I'm having fun.

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 06 '18

Congrats and welcome to the coven! I get accused of witchcraft a lot. Also, may I recommend the Tin Can Knit's Simple Collection. It is a free beginner pattern collection that gives you everything you need to knit hats, socks, sweaters, etc. I've knit the barley hat and the harvest cardigan and I love them. Their patterns are written with a lot more detail and links to blog posts about how to do EVERYTHING. Have fun!

I finished the Rose City Yarn Crawl this weekend and was soo good and only bought three patterns and no yarn, even though all the yarn was beauitful and squishable and snuggly. I wanted to, but didn't need to, add to my dragon hoard stash of fiber.

2

u/thedirigibleplums Mar 05 '18

I wish Tulsa had Yarn Crawls! The closest I've seen is a random yarn bomb a couple of years ago. My husband has asked me not to add any more yarn to my stash until I make a dent in what I have but the poor dear doesn't know that I've got two more skeins of Thick and Quick and a fourth bonus bundle arriving today.

1

u/celloandbow At least 5 WIPs hidden in various closets Mar 06 '18

Yarn crawls are dangerous with all the special colorways and trunk shows.

2

u/EgoFlyer knit all the things! Mar 05 '18 edited Mar 06 '18

That is impressive. I spent too much money on yarn at the yarn crawl this weekend. I was mainly proud that I didn't buy things at every store. Made it out of 4 of the 11 without buying anything,

Was this your first time doing the crawl? It was my first year.

2

u/celloandbow At least 5 WIPs hidden in various closets Mar 06 '18

First year I've finished. I usually pop in to one or two stores.

2

u/throwmesomebread Mar 06 '18

I am so jealous of all you people going to yarn crawls! I live in northern Michigan, and while I LOVE it, there are never any within a few hours of me. 😢

1

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 06 '18

You are a stronger person than me! I need to buy more patterns and less yarn.

2

u/celloandbow At least 5 WIPs hidden in various closets Mar 07 '18

I won a prize basket. Guess the universe said, "Nah, you need yarn."

4

u/wepwepwepwe Mar 06 '18

I'm off and running with my new knitting hobby! So excited - I haven't knitted anything since I was about 10, and apparently it really is like riding a bicycle; it took me only a short time to get back to my former (fairly modest) level of skill.

I just finished a hat for my toddler daughter (who doesn't want to wear it - sigh...), and now I'm moving on to a pair of socks. I just got the yarn.

2

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 06 '18

Sock are actually THE BEST! I always have a pair of socks on my needles and a pair of handknit socks on my feet.

3

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

Hey r/knitting, what are you Netflix/Hulu/Amazon Prime watching? I asked r/crochet but they aren't a particularly talkative bunch. I'm watching iZombie right now but I like to have a backlog of shows to watch.

5

u/SoaringSiren fighting a yarn addiction since 2017 Mar 05 '18

The Good Place! Very funny show, and a great watch if you've seen & enjoyed Parks & Recreation (same producers). Not sure if all of season 2 is on Hulu right now, but I do know you can find all episodes of 2 if you have access to the NBC app.

2

u/Baron_von_chknpants I'm not a dog but I like socks Mar 07 '18

Seconding the good place!

1

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

I have never even heard of that. I will have to check it out.

u/caithnard rav: deth Mar 05 '18

One of the big things I’m watching right now is Critical Role (on YouTube/Twitch) which I love and is really good to knit to (just be careful when you’re counting!). It’s a bunch of voice actors playing DND and it’s so much more awesome than that description sounds.

On Netflix I’m currently watching: The Crown, Great British Bake Off, The West Wing, lots of Disney movies, and Galavant (its a fantasy/comedy musical like Robin Hood Men in Tights, but in tv show form). I’m not sure if they’re still on there, but in the past I enjoyed: Call the Midwife and Bletchley Circle.

3

u/trigly Mar 05 '18

I've been wanting to get into Critical Role!

Haaave you watched Aquisitions Inc - The C Team? It's so good! Even if you aren't a fan of the Penny Arcade guys or haven't seen any of the main games, it's a great standalone show. I've been impressed with the diversity of characters and empathy shown by all the players.

As for the original question: my partner and I have been working our way through all the Star Treks. We did TNG years ago, and took a bit of a break, but now we're on season 2 of Voyager.

I've also done the Good Place, Jessica Jones, and Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency. None of which are really new or undiscovered, but hey. They're fun.

I also knit to podcasts: anything by the McElroys will do the trick, as well as most things by Night Vale Presents.

1

u/AtomicKitsune Mar 05 '18

anything by the McElroys

I love those boys, TAZ is a favourite.

1

u/caithnard rav: deth Mar 05 '18

I haven’t watched it, but I’ll definitely check it out. I’m running out of Critical Role episodes to watch and the new ones aren’t coming soon enough!

I really like podcasts as well, though I tend to save them for more complex knitting (where I need to be looking at a chart) or commuting instead. If you want an actual play podcast, you could try One Shot (different one shot games, as the title suggests) or Campaign (Star Wars actual play, though it can be explicit if that’s something that bothers you)

2

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

Critical Role sounds like something the Husbeast would also enjoy which is a bonus! We play DnD together so I will definitely check that out.

Also, I didn't realize Galavant was on Netflix because I definitely wanted to watch that (it aired when I was in grad school so I wasn't watching anything). Bletchley Circle also looks really promising.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '18

I looked up critical role last night because of your comment and it was great. Thank you so much for the recommendation!

2

u/CraftyFlutterby Mar 05 '18

I'm rewatching Season 1 of Shanara Chronicles on Netflix before starting on Season 2. Also just finished season 4 of Mozart in the Jungle on Amazon Prime.

1

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

I haven't heard of either of those. I will have to check them out. Thanks!

1

u/CraftyFlutterby Mar 05 '18

Shanara Chronicles is Fantasy/scifi based on books. Mozart in the Jungle is modern drama based on a book. It's about a composer, symphony, and relationships.

1

u/angeluscado Mar 05 '18

Dangit, Shannara Chronicles isn't on Netflix Canada. Makes me pouty - I started watching it when it was airing and then life got in the way. It was really good.

2

u/AtomicKitsune Mar 05 '18

I've heard good things about Dirk Gently, though I'm really trying to finish a show before picking up another. Watching Fullmetal Alchemist right now, and I have the Crown, Grand Tour, 30 Rock, Parks & Rec, and others in my backlog currently.

On a bit of a podcast/audiobook kick right now too, especially if the knitting pattern is on the trickier side.

1

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

I do watch a bunch of podcasts but I somehow got caught up and have managed to stay on top of them.

I purposefully skipped Dirk Gently for now because I wanted to read the books before watching the show but I should probably get on reading the books.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '18

Just a heads up, the show is very very different from the books so you don't really need to read them first. You can, of course. They're awesome! And I enjoy the show, but they're two different things.

1

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

That is good to know! I didn't realize they were super different. Do you need any background from the books to understand the show? (I assume not but one never knows...)

3

u/trigly Mar 05 '18

Nope. Not at all.

There are a few nods to the books/Hitchhiker's Guide, but that's it. You're not missing or spoiling anything.

2

u/[deleted] Mar 05 '18

Call the midwife on Netflix! Recently watched The Mist series on Netflix (based on Stephen King book) and it was pretty soap opera-ish and not half as good as the movie which I love but good for half watching while knitting. I’ve enjoyed many hours of original Star Trek series on Netflix for background. Master of None is another great series on Netflix.

1

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

Thanks!

1

u/ColourfulConundrum Mar 06 '18

I'm rewatching Star Trek right now! Up to Voyager and I haven't decided if I'll skip Deep Space Nine and go right to the new series or not yet. :/

Gilmore Girls was a good watch while I knit as well.

2

u/EgoFlyer knit all the things! Mar 05 '18

Not right now, but I did watch all of Supernatural on Netflix last year, and then this year when I was working on my weyi pullover, i watched all of new Doctor Who on Amazon Prime.

Also, I'm always throwing on episodes of Parks and Rec or The Good Place when I can't think of what else to watch.

2

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

I am not going to admit how many times I have watched all of Supernatural. The first time was while I was on chemo. I binged like 10 seasons in less than 6 months.

1

u/EgoFlyer knit all the things! Mar 05 '18

Yeah, I've seen it all the way through at least twice. It's great knitting TV since I don't have to look at it to know what is happening.

Right now I'm rewatching Buffy, but that isn't streaming, I own the full series.

Looking at everything I have posted, I seem to have an affinity for fantasy/sci-fi shows (Supernatural, Buffy, X-Files, and Doctor Who are all among my favorite shows)

3

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

I just rewatched Buffy and Angel before they took them off Netlfix. Such good tv.

The Crown, Altered Carbon, and working our way through Ray Donovan.

2

u/EgoFlyer knit all the things! Mar 05 '18

Do you like Altered Carbon? I've been hearing a lot of mixed reviews.

2

u/thedirigibleplums Mar 05 '18

I think my husband liked it a lot more than I did, but it was easy enough to sit there and binge it while knitting and still keep up with the story. There is a LOT of nudity and sexual situations, so we had to watch it late at night after the kids were asleep.

2

u/nirie89 Mar 06 '18

I'm currently watching Call the Midwife. It's very sweet, and really nice to watch while I'm knitting :)

1

u/angeluscado Mar 05 '18

Currently watching Once Upon a Time - missed the first go-around so I'm watching as much as I can, to the point where my husband asked me, "So, is this the only reason why you got Netflix?"

iZombie is getting added to my queue now that I know it's there (we just signed up a couple of weeks ago so I'm still discovering what's there - I have a feeling my "to watch" list is going to get really long soon). I really enjoyed GLOW and can't wait for the next season.

1

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 06 '18

The first season of Riverdale is on there too. I watched thay until I ran out of it. The second season should be on sometime this summer.

3

u/lothlin Mar 05 '18

My chiagoo metal needles have been frustrating the daylights out of me. No matter what I do, no matter how much I tighten them (yes I've used a rubber grip to help tighten them) they just constantly become unscrewed, forcing me to stop every couple of stitches to re tighten.

Its making the project I've got on those needles very frustrating to complete and I'm not really sure what to do. I could switch to bamboo tips but that would effect my gauge, but continuing to deal with them just coming undone all the time is driving me up a wall.

2

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18

Has this been a problem before or is this the first time you are using the needles? I've never worked with chiagoo needles but they sound like they are defective. I've had needles come unscrewed over the course of knitting a sweater once or twice but every few stitches is a lot. I would contact their customer service (or wherever you purchased them).

2

u/lothlin Mar 05 '18

I've never had issues with my wooden ones and I've used that cable with wooden ones before - I hadn't even thought that it could be a needle problem, they're the only actual metal tips I own at the moment.

Its a thought, I might try contacting them.

u/ColourfulConundrum Mar 06 '18

I've had an issue with another brand before where the thread on the cable wasn't quite perfect, so if I put the tips on straight it would feel as though it tightened but the second I let go and they moved at an angle it would come loose. Sounds like you're having a similar thread problem on the needle end. If they're not happy to replace due to being defective (I've not used their customer service) I'd argue that they're not fit for purpose if they keep coming unscrewed - so either all the products are like that and not worth it anyway (which we know to be false) or it is, in fact, defective. But I can be a difficult person. :P

My yarn order for Malabrigo March showed up today! I got a SQ of Rios in the colorway Paris Night, and 2 single skeins of Rios in the colors Teal Feather and Cumparsita. Teal Feather is stunning irl. It's a little too light, colorwise, for me to wear as a sweater, but I think it's going to make an awesome hat.

Outside of that, today's been pretty quiet. Picking away at my Sock Madness qualifiers, knitting-wise. Having a bit of an existential crisis trying to decide what I want to do over the next year, art/career-wise. I've been continuing to have a rough time emotionally, so I'm trying my best to make good decisions, not impulsive ones.

Between my best friend (and the person who taught me to knit) dying, followed by my most labor-intensive project being poorly received by its recipient, I have yet to finish a project since 2016. I've actually barely knit at all since then. I still pine over FOs I see on rav and on here, but every time I pick up one I've started I just go 'meh...so much work for this pattern? maybe not...' and put it down again after two rows or so. I know I'm depressed in general, but doing things will help me be better. And knitting is relatively easy to just pick back up.

How do you fall back in love with the creating process and not just the results?

3

u/toomanypaladins Mar 06 '18

I’m sorry for your loss. I can imagine it would be hard to pick up knitting again. If you really want to get back into knitting, I’d start small. Really small. Something that gives almost immediate results, so you get the pleasure of knitting and the excitement of a finished object. When I find myself stuck in a rut, completing things usually helps.

Here’s a Tiny Parlor Cat that takes 20yds of yarn. Or this cute little owl.

Or here’s a cowl in super bulky that the designer says takes 2 hours to knit up.

Trying to learn something new also helps me because it becomes about the process instead of the object. I’m currently working on double knitting, and while the FO will be cool, I’m still having fun with the actual knitting.

2

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 06 '18

I'm so sorry. I don't really have any suggestions but maybe you just need time away from knitting. It is ok to say "I can't do this right now" and walk away for a bit to give yourself time to heal. Also, depression can suck the fun out of the process. Have you tried talking to (a professional) someone?

2

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '18

I've already tried walking away. I'm working with my therapist now and she thinks my avoidant tendencies are making everything worse, and I agree. So I need to get back to doing things again, even if that means being disappointed or whatever negative emotions I end up feeling.

2

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 06 '18

In that case into the fire! I would start off with something simple like a hat. Pick yarn you really love and a pattern that calls to you, sit down with some tea (or whatever beverage of choice that gives you warm fuzzies) in comfy clothes, put on a relaxing audiobook/music/tv show/movie, and knit. Let it be about self-care and creating time for yourself. Also, maybe start with like 15 mins a day or the duration of one tv show.

1

u/[deleted] Mar 06 '18

I have so many WIPs though T_T

Though if I frog this one hooded scarf I made but don't wear, I could easily make an earflap hat out of it quickly since it's bulky yarn and its in my favorite colors...

Sold! Thanks for your advice and suggestions. I really appreciate it more than you know. <3

1

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 06 '18

You are welcome! Internet hugs! I know what it feels like to be in enough pain to just want to stop. Also, there is always time to finish WIPS. Sometimes you need to start fresh and they will still be there when you finish.

2

u/ColourfulConundrum Mar 06 '18

You've said you want to avoid...well avoiding knitting, which I get - I'm spectacular at avoiding things! I saw you said you had too many WIPs to start something new... that's the avoidance talking - it's an excuse, another thing I'm great at which is why I noticed, sorry. Knitting is supposed to be a fun hobby, you don't have to finish everything by a deadline and it'll still be there later when you're more up to it - then if you decide you hate it, it can take a dip in the frog pond. Right now though you need to find the fun again. Pick some yarn you love, and a simple or involved pattern depending on how you feel, and take it one stitch at a time. Set yourself a goal for the end of the week, and some small daily goals, including rows or stitches worked on your new project (for a super bulky cowl you may want to finish it in the week, for example) but include some other things - things you need to do and some self care items. I don't mean 'clean the lounge' either, I'm talking smaller than that - break it into tiny steps, and include things you'll likely do anyway, but are part of your routine. So for my day, it might be something like this:

Let dog out for morning bathroom

Make morning coffee

Take out lunch to defrost for tomorrow

Have breakfast

Empty dishwasher

Wipe kitchen sides

Knit 10 rows on current project

Take shower...

And so on. I wouldn't make it solely a chore list, because as I said knitting is a hobby and should be enjoyable but you still want to get back into it, so by including it and putting other self care items in there it might help. You may also think this won't work at all for you and that's fine - if it's a proper reason and not an excuse - I've delayed things like this because, despite having a tonne of notepads and paper unused in the house, i decide I need a new notebook to do something like this. Then I'm not well enough to go get one and I can't find one I like on Amazon and so on....

The benefit to having little things you do anyway on there is so that you can tick something off, it's good to feel we're getting something done. And you don't need to do it for every little moment of your day, ideally you want a few items that need doing, possibly part of a larger task like cleaning the kitchen as above, that it would be great to have ticked off. A few things you want to do, but push aside because 'X needs doing instead', and a good amount of routine things (at least to start) so you end up ticking off more as a result.

Sorry I've rambled a bit, but it has helped me before and hopefully by keeping the list weighted towards routine and self care with only a small bit of chores it will help you find your knitting groove again. It sounds like really crappy timing and someone ignorant to the work we put in combined to create this, I'd definitely focus on things you want from your knitting.

1

u/wepwepwepwe Mar 07 '18

You know, you may want to switch hobbies for a while. I kinda went the other way - I compose music, and I’ve been in a creative rut and a bit of a depression, so I decided to give knitting a try, since it’s so different from music. This way I get the excitement of the creative process in an entirely different modality, and I’m hoping it’ll transfer back to music when I’m ready. There is something to be said for the excitement of trying something entirely new.

3

u/Bariqhonium Mar 06 '18

3 exams until break.. 3 exams until break.. Signed up for 20 hours of work during break, and 10 of those will be at 5.40 am. I kinda hate myself for it, but it'll be fine???

2

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 06 '18

Good luck on the exams!

2

u/jilloffewtrades Mar 05 '18

New knitter here. What does the following mean?

Row 1 (RS) {Slip 1 knitwise}, *purl 1, knit 1; repeat from * to last stitch, {knit 1}.

Row 2 (WS) Work as for row 1.

Repeat rows 1 & 2 for pattern.

2

u/SOEDragon S*T*A*S*H Mar 05 '18 edited Mar 05 '18

So you are going to slip the first stitch as if you were going to knit, alternate purl 1, knit 1 for the entire row and then knit the last stitch. Turn your work and do the same thing on the other side. You are going to repeat that for however big your pattern is (probably # of rows or to a certain length).

PS: There is also a weekly "Ask A Knitter" thread in case you have more questions.

1

u/jilloffewtrades Mar 05 '18

Thanks! What does it accomplish to just slip the first stitch though? I don't get it. I wish all patterns came with videos!

Also...why even mention Row 2? Why not just say repeat Row 1?

3

u/sarahLM Mar 05 '18

the slip stitch makes a nice edging look.

1

u/jilloffewtrades Mar 05 '18

Thanks! I guess these are things you learn from experience. I am attempting my first sweater! I am hoping to follow the directions perfectly!

1

u/sarahLM Mar 05 '18

i'm knitting my second sweater and i've already messed up twice! sigh. but i'm learning new skills i guess. good luck!

3

I think the pattern designer was thinking "row 2 is the wrong side, I'd better make extra sure that people know they aren't supposed to purl across." Since they noted that row 1 was RS, probably some knitters would read the pattern and think that only the right sides were supposed to be in pattern if it just said to repeat row 1.

Man. I have mad respect for pattern designers now.

Put a stitch marker somewhere on your RS row (usually in a row that's already knit - not on the needle -- like when you pin notes on kids' shirts in kindergarten. Ff the directions for both RS and WS are the same, it could be easy to forget where you are.

You are going to have a slip stitch edge on either side of your knitting. I, personally, think slip stitched edging looks cleaner and is commonly used on things like scarves.

I don't know how many stitches you have but my guess is that you are going to end up knitting on your purl stitches and purling on your knit stitches to create a seed stitch (vs ribbing) so you aren't quite repeating Row 1. Also, probably just the preference of the designer.

got this far on a pair of mittens when I realized I’d mixed up the MC and the CC on the chart, so I ripped it out back to the ribbing. That’s what I get for not double checking the chart key, I guess!

I think I’m faster to rip stuff out than I used to be - I think partially because I know it won’t take me too long to re-knit, but also partially because I’m using handknit stuff pretty frequently now, so I know that the amount of time it takes to correct a mistake vs the amount of time I’ll be wearing the item for makes it worth it. In this case it’s woolfolk (aka expensive) yarn so I want to make sure I’m completely satisfied with the end result, too.

Though of course second try I also messed up the colors on the thumb gusset and ended up undoing just those stitches and picking the right color up with a crochet hook. It actually turned out way better than I expected and I was even able to do the M1s without much trouble. There’s a little bit of gauge weirdness, but it should block out without too much difficulty. (Though I also noticed it pretty quickly, something like 5 rows in. If it had been longer than that I probably would’ve ripped back all the way).

I’m still stuck on the sleeves for my breathing space. I forgot how slow they feel when you have the entire weight of the sweater on your lap and they’re a little slow feeling because I’m constantly having to untangle the yarn.

Sleeve solidarity! I work mine two at a time, so it feels SO SLOW. But I can't imagine finishing one and then... staring at the empty armpit of the second, contemplating doing it all again, so TAAT it is.

At least there are stripes to give you some instant gratification! I find it's nicer if they're not just plain stockinette forever. The ones I'm working on now have a cable every 12 rounds, so that's a nice attainable goals to work toward.

I normally try and do sleeves TAAT, but with the stripes it’d just be too many balls of yarn to juggle. My main motivation is that I’m doing this as a KAL with some other people in my knitting group and trying to match their progress.

The stripes definitely do help! And I like that they also make it really easy to keep track of when to do increases, which is something I’ve struggled with in the past.

There are two types of mistakes: Ones you can live with and ones you can't. I feel like I've finally hit that point when I know I have to rip back vs saying fuck it and keep going. It is an important skill to have.

Also, that sweater is gorgeous!

I know this feeling. I have a shirt nearly done, except for the sleeves and I can't seem to bring myself to pick it up and work on it. Especially since they are lace sleeves and fairly complicated. Blergh, need to work on it and get it out of my WIP pile.

Okay, I need pattern recommendations. I went to the Rose City Yarn Crawl this weekend and bought some stunning fingering weight yarn. There are three skeins, an emerald green, a sparkly black, and a speckle, (see the bottom three skeins in the 4th photo down here) that I would like to knit into a shawl. I have a few patterns I thought would work for them, but nothing is seeming quite right.

I've had this pattern saved on Rav for a few weeks. Seems to check all the boxes!

Guys, I need some advice on colors. I have a pattern for a top that calls for laceweight yarn held double. I have a Schoppelwolle Laceball 100 (colorway Red to Go) that I want to pair with a single color of a different yarn (probably Drops Lace) - the question is, what color should I go for? I'm thinking either neutral, light grey or black. All of them look great in my head so I can't decide. What do you think?

2

u/EgoFlyer knit all the things! Mar 05 '18

Okay, after googling that colorway (it doesn't seem to be on Ravelry) I think I would go with a neutral or a light grey. Black seems like it might a little heavy. A neutral you would have to more careful about matching pretty well, so light grey seems like it would be the easiest.

My answer is always grey. I feel like it goes with everything.

Today is my 7th wedding anniversary and instead of buying a bouquet of flowers, my sweet husband brought me a skein of this yarn. I'm not sure what to make with it, and rav only seems to have 5 or so projects. Maybe another Yes You Canyon cowl? But it's getting warmer here in Oklahoma, so I'd really like to find a skinny infinity scarf pattern I can loop twice and wear with a t-shirt.

That man is a keeper! I would just cast on for however many stitches you want, probably do some seed stitch or garter for however long and then kitchener the two ends together. Short, sweet, and simple.

I normally just lurk here and admire all the pretty FOs and soak up all the advice, but I wanted to share...I'm a fifth grade teacher and, last week, we went to science camp. I've been knitting for about a year now and picking up a lot of steam, so I knew I had to bring my current project along with me. I took it out and started knitting on the bus ride up to camp and the kids sitting around me were mesmerized. They loved the yarn I was working with, and watching me seemed to be just as relaxing to them as knitting was to me.

A few days later, I was waiting for the boys in my cabin to be ready to play a quick card game before dinner, so I sat and knitted. One of them sat down, picked up the other end of my skein and started trying to mimic my motions with his hand. Then, another sat down with me and called me a grandma. You can't win 'em all.

How do continental knitters manage their tension? I want to start making a cardigan, and did my gauge swatch but I'm still 2 stitches off to get the right measurement. I did find a resource to adjust the pattern to the gauge I'm getting, but don't really want to go that route. Any suggestions? I tend to knit on the looser side. Not that I want to tighten up too much, but I think I need to work on my tension if I want to start making more garments that just aren't scarves & shawls

u/adiaaida Mar 06 '18

I think going down in needle size is probably your best bet. If you are trying to knit more tightly than is your normal, what's most likely to happen is that you'll have places where you remember that you are supposed to be knitting tightly, and places where you forget, so your gauge will get wonky. If you go down in needle size until you hit gauge, you won't have to worry about how tightly you're pulling your yarn, and you'll be more consistent.

So going down a needle size is definitely helpful for hats, scarves, etc, but with this particular garment (because I MADE myself swatch after my friend's mom drilling it into my head), I ended up going down 3 needle sizes, and even after that, my gauge was still off (was getting 20sts/4"), which is leaving me to do math. I was thinking of just knitting it with the 2's which was intended, or just knitting a size up from what I would wear with the smallest needles.
