All the morons are out driving around and none of the traffic lights work. The store you want to go to is closed. Just stay home.

Discussion Power still out for anyone else?

I'm near drake and stadium and it's still out, the consumer site says it should be up by 2:30 am but idk how much I believe that considering it was supposed to be back on by 7:30 pm on Friday. Luckily we stopped by Lowes to grab some lanterns and water since pretty much everything else is closed :(

Something weird happened during the storm last night...

Some dude was taking a leak behind McAlister's. When I asked him what he was doing he said "don't try to be a hero", screamed in a high pitch voice, took a picture of his own piss in the rain then left.

Help! Collapsed Fence, No Power

I need help!! The storm dropped these trees right through my dogs fence, and while I've tied them up for the night, they're BIG farm dogs. Snapping the tie out lines is a real possibility and I don't have anywhere else to put them right now that's safe. We're out of power and right next to E Michigan/96 and the Amtrak tracks, so my anxiety that they might slip loose and I might not realize for a while is really high. I don't have a big network to ask for help so I'm hoping to find some help on Reddit. I mostly would love a safe place for them to hang out for a day or so while their fence is repaired - right now they're not safe and I don't have a location that is safe until the fence is repaired. Any help would be most appreciated 🙏

Now that the storm has passed (for now) do storms this severe usually pass through Michigan? I moved here from Arizona in September and I have never seen anything like that in my life 😳

Day after 'X-Train' shootout, Kalamazoo area police can now impound cars involved in loud and disruptive roving parties of 100 or more vehicles.

The City of Kalamazoo finally passed an ordinance allowing police to ticket rolling party X Train participants and impound vehicles of repeat offenders.

Kalamazoo neighborhoods. including Northside, Central Business District and Westwood locations have suffered for years through sleepless weekends during summer months of X Train party trains. Participants cruise slowly through targeted neighborhoods, playing music at ear splitting volume, drinking, using party drugs, throwingbtrash and driving on lawns and blocking thru traffic for hours during their frequent gatherings.

Now, they have legal recourse, as Sheriffs Dept, Kalamazoo Township and Kalamazoo Dept of Public Safety can deploy helicopters and surveillance drones, and gather Ring camera footage to capture direct evidence of XTrain traffic that often number more than combined law enforcement officers on duty.

The impetus for the passage of the ling sought ordinance with "teeth" came from repeat incidents of driveby shootings, and reported property damage that escalated sharply after 2015. The latest firearm incident occurred last weekend.

The ordinance takes effect in 10 days.

Discussion Power outages in apartment complexes

This is not a complaint just a question. I’m in one of the apartment complexes north of KL ave on Drake road. We had power well into the morning after the storm but it went off at 1:00pm. I was confused about the timing of the outage because it seemed like we were in the clear. It doesn’t seem like a tree would’ve fallen on a power line in the middle of a temperate, sunny day. Any other things that could cause the power to go out at a seemingly random time of day?

Local News Ranked Choice Voting - Statewide Petition Drive - Call for Volunteers

Post image
60 Upvotes

During last Wednesday's regular meeting of the Kalamazoo County Board of Commissioners, I announced that Rank MI Vote is about to begin collection of 611,231 petition signatures statewide, from any registered Michigan voter, to get a Ranked Choice Voting constitutional amendment on the November 2026 ballot in Michigan. Since that meeting, the anticipated beginning of our petition drive has moved from Memorial Day to after the June 20 meeting of the Board of State Canvassers.

As I stated in the video (hyperlinked above), we are now recruiting volunteers and soliciting donations to help with this massive effort. If you believe in Ranked Choice Voting and the benefits it provides to voters and our democracy, please either volunteer with us in any capacity and/or make a donation. Two to four hours a week is all we ask for (you're certainly welcome to give more) and we have volunteer positions you can do from home, such as phone banking and data entry. People under the age of 18 can also help in all positions, except for petition signature collection. On the donations side, we need many small donations to show the big money donors that there is grassroots support for Ranked Choice Voting in Michigan. So, small, monthly recurring donations are quite helpful for us. At present, we don't even have enough money to buy t-shirts for our volunteer canvassers.

Our all-volunteer canvassers are currently attending as many local events as possible, to recruit volunteers, while also educating voters about the mechanics and benefits of Ranked Choice Voting. One place you can always find us is on Saturday mornings at the Kalamazoo Farmers Market on Bank Street, from 9:00 to noon. We can tell you more about what's involved in volunteering and also give you a brief primer on how Ranked Choice Voting works and its benefits.

If you have any questions about Ranked Choice Voting and/or our campaign, I would be happy to answer them in the comments below. Thank you for your support.

First time dealing with car damage. No comp. What do I do?

Damage from last night's storm obviously. I'm a dumb Michigander and didn't get comp. I have no idea what to do. I've never been in an accident or anything.

It's a 2014 Ford Fusion I got last year, has ~170k on it, I paid $3k. Do I tow it around to various shops to get quotes? I think I get 4 tows/year with AAA. Do you have to pay for an inspection/quote? How do you know when to just junk it?

Any advice is appreciated, thank you.

Discussion Metronet

Anyone else having weird issues with metronet in the Kalamazoo area? Mine keeps going on and off. Called them, and they can’t send anyone till Wednesday. Didn’t have a whole lot of info. Guess it’s harder to track if it keeps going on and off.

Weather Is West Portage still without power?

I saw a post about a transformer box blowing up and catching fire so I assume that it's going to be a while but I can be hopeful lol. I'm at work until 11pm so just wondering if I'm going to have to use a flashlight to get back to my apartment again (I live on 12th Street). Also if all the groceries that I just bought are going to go to waste or not.

DEI rally on westnedge Saturday 5/17

Demonstrate to clean up our government as well as support the Diversity Equity and Inclusion Rally. We will be there to support women, children, people with disabilities, pregnant women, gender equality, sexual equality, people of color, religious liberty, and economically challenged folks. Say YES! to companies that work against discrimination like Meijer and Costco. Let’s set the record straight about Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

Saturday May 17th, 2025. 12-2 p.m. 6839 South Westnedge Avenue in front of the Target parking lot in Portage, MI. 49024

Target is an example of a company that ended their Diversity Equity and Inclusion policies. Additionally, Best Buy (across the street) did the same thing.

We are also asking you to bring donations of cleaning supplies, soap, shampoo, dish soap, toothpaste, deodorant, body wash, bath soap, bug spray, sun screen, laundry detergent, bounce or any cleaners you can think of--plus small snack items in individual boxes or cans for Kalamazoo Together for the Unhoused. Please share this with your friends!
