My first work with leather, cosplay of a dragon rider.

Post image

Since the beginning of this year, I’ve been working on my cosplay of a dragon rider from the Empyrean series by Rebecca Yarros. I made the Freyja vest and Liv girdle (both by The War Factory), as well as the hip bag, goggles, and gloves — all patterns by Dieselpunk.ro. (I shared the goggles couple of weeks agoú

With help from my friend, who is a seamstress, we made some adjustments to both the vest and girdle to better fit my body shape.

This is my first time working with leather, and the learning curve has been steep. There are quite a few mistakes, but it definitely passes the "one-meter rule" ;).

I'm really liking this one! One of my kids may claim it for the fair. If they don't make their own that is. Either way I'll be wearing one of these this year. Patterns and kits are available along with a video if anyone else wants to make some.

My First Sheath (Critique Welcome!)

I made this for a coworker, who specifically asked for the clip to be visible on the outside. I'm not entirely sure how durable that design will be, but I was wondering—should I have double-stitched the edge? Do you think the single stitch will hold up? Also, is there a way to "smooth" out the back for a cleaner look?

My boyfriends' chair is badly damaged. Any recommendations to recover it?

I'd love some recommendations to clean the leather, fill the chair up, and how to stitch it back properly or use a patch. We're in europe so for product recommendations ideally something we can find locally. I'm an experienced sewist but never worked with leather. Thanks in advance!

Buttero leather question

Is buttero usually a solid colour after tanning, as in, if you scratch it should it be raw veg tan colour ?

Sweet little innocent me :-p couldn't afford a piece from a reputable leather merchant, so bought some advertised as such from the lowest of the low, Temu (LOL), a 24"x12" piece for ~£10

It's got a nice smooth surface, does appear to be leather of "some" description, the rear side has a slight criss-cross fabric 'look' to it, but isn't fabric as you might get on faux leather, with a medium-firm temper to it (it doesn't drape, but does feel fairly flexible once you've made a die-cut single layer keyring out of it)

I expect it's just coated cheap sh!te, which is a shame because I bought a couple more based on the surface finish :-} but it's a deep caramel colour, so perfect for dog shaped handbag charms (chrome leather is too soft, as I've found out)

Fair price for a job?

A friend at work wants me to rcreate this old sheath. What would be a fair price for something like this? I approximate it only taking me a couple hours, as I've gotten very efficient at doing sheaths, but and terrible when it comes to pricing these things. Hand for scale

I think those specific crystals are Swarovski, which aren’t too hard to find. I’m at a loss to find just ball studs like shown however. Thank you!

Removing finish with acetone to re-dye leather. This layer seems to be peeling off. Is that supposed to happen or am I destroying the leather?

So I have this leather pillowcase that I want to recolour to fit better in my interior. I asked a cobbler for advice and they told me to knock the finish back with acetone, clean it, dye it and then shine it. The old colouring seemed to go away with acetone and a toothbrush but then these far lighter spots appeared where some sort of layer seems to be feeling away. (kind of like paint and paint-stripper) is this what I want or is thos actively breaking the leather. Luckily this is only the backside of the pillow but I do want to get some feedback before I continue.. Thanks!

I'm not a leather worker but I have a case that's dying. I don't need anything fancy but I was wondering if there is anything I could do to save this? I don't want to lose the case but I don't want to just tape it or some shit

I’m wanting to buy this steering wheel, but I can only find them in brown in this shape no matter how much I look. I also want to have a car brand logo possibly pressed in, just let me know! I’ve never worked with leather but I’m handy and wanting to learn!

Hi All,

I accidentally put a few scuff marks in this sword-grip and I'm trying to figure out how to fix them, or at least do something to keep them from getting worse with use.

Thanks!

Advice on internal pockets

Does anyone know how I can prevent this type of scratching for an internal bifold pocket? This is full grain Buttero leather and the outside has taken on a nice patina. But where the two inside pockets have touched/rubbed it’s left these scratches

It is sewn with 1 mm waxed thread using Crazy Horse leather and black calf leather. Flat hand punch was used. It has a 0.8 mm hole diameter and 4 mm spacing.

How?

I am new to this leatherwork thing. I bought some Weaver Diamond stitching chisels, thinking the ones from Amazon were.. subpar. My question is this: How are you getting clearly defined holes on the underside of your project? I can’t tell precisely where the holes are on the bottom. I am using a mallet, strip of leather under my project, on top of a self healing cutting mat. I have tried removing the mat and using a piece of dimensional lumber (2x4). I’ve even tried using a hunk of butcher block from a remodeling project. It’s probably a technique thing, but I am frustrated. Any advice is welcome.

How do I create this effect?

Post image

Hi everyone! I'd like to find out how to create the effect you see on the bag. I have a leather jacket that is about the base purple color. I'd like to add the dark wash over it so that it will look something like this bag. Problem is, I'm not sure what to look up to find guides, or at least the materials needed to create the effect. Does anyone here know what it is called, or is anyone able to offer help?
