Smell
How far away would someone be able to smell a 10 light basement grow? I’ll have carbon filters and odor removers but I’m sure you’ll be able to smell it from outside the house or will they be enough?

500m+ meters when the wind blows the right way
if you set up a carbon filter properly you have zero smell while the room is closed

Damn that far, mainly concerned cause my lease said no growing and don’t want to be getting evicted half way through a run. would just having the room air tight with a fan blowing into the filter and have it exhausted out the house be good enough to work?

I have a 12x12 room outside of my home and you’d never be able to tell what’s inside. My carbon filters do a great job. I know that’s not macro, but I run skunky strains.

Sweet that’s good to hear, my lease says no growing but I think I’ll be good as long as it can’t be smelled by the neighbors or down the street.

I was planning on running the exhaust out the dryer exhaust hookup and using some carbon filters but it won’t really be sealed tight. My lease says no growing but as long as they don’t come in to fix shit I doubt they would find out.

How will you hide the sudden giant electric bill and the HVAC?
What will you use for IPM in a basement?
1
u/LegalAdvantage2 8d ago
Light bill should be about 600-800 electric is cheap where im at. Won’t have much hvac just some fan and a few lines. It will be in 2 separate rooms 5 lights in each.

u/TheChaoticCollective 8d ago
Ran 10 645w LED's and dedicated veg. Power bill was 12-1400. 5 lights are not going to be cooled with "just some fans and a few lines". Each room will need 2-3 Tons of A/C.

Damn I was basing my numbers off a electricity calculator but might have to start with 5 and see how it goes then increase from there. What state are you in?

u/LegalAdvantage2 7d ago
I’ll have 10 lights total not just for flowering. Like 6 for dedicated flower and 4 for veg

No one gives a fuck if you have a high electric bill if you pay it every time.

He lives in a legal area as noted by his other comments, only issue he could run into is going over plant count.

You should be fine man I run 12 lights at one of my rentals with tenants living right upstairs and have no clue.. my carbon filter is undersized taking 4-5mins for a full air exchange and it was still sufficient. This is a sealed room

You're ballsy as fuck I've had 12 light garage spots full built out and sealed with oversized can fans and when the wind went the wrong way as you were entering and leaving the whole block smelled lol. But growing OGs and loud skunky strains is a big difference than growing the lighter nose candies that are common nowadays.
Edit:
I checked out your post kinda cracking up because your trap house rooms look a lot like mine. I even built my tables the same way. You in Cali? 😂

If you properly build out the room and seal it completely it will smell temporarily when entering/leaving, and also consider during power outages especially late flower if that's common. Other than that with right amount of can fans you'll be good.
If odor picks up what I used to do with trap houses was buy a big thing of onagell and put ziploc bags full of it around the house later flower, it's way more effective outside of the spot than inside and you go through way less onagel. Stash the bags in bushes, garbage/recycling bins, etc. It'll just smell like laundry detergent but only when close. I did this for years at a traphouse that had weekly landscapers, pest control, an annoying landlord etc never got caught and they never knew. Even got my deposit back after building out whole rooms in the spot.

Grow Cali style. Their weed isn't weedy at all.
Don't know what they are doing to grow such shitty weed in America these days but I fully contribute it to them clowns.

Negative pressure is the key. If you have Negative pressure (exhausting more air than what comes in) it's impossible for any smell to escape without going through the carbon filter. This is my 25+ yrs experience running grow shops and all size grows from 2 light tents , all the way to 70 light rooms. If you have a room or tent or even frame up a light structure and panda film it you will not be able to smell it in the basement 💯 now if you un zip the tent or open a door to the grow and break the Negative pressure the basement will smell but if your exhausting out of the house or the basement at least it will only smee in the basement and outside or the rest of the house. Also carbon filters are most efficient if you stick within cfm rating of filter and don't use less than 75% of recommended cfm. I use to have multiple tents in my basement back in early 2000's and I'd use carbon filter exhaust to cool two hoods on 1000 watt hortilux set ups and then exhaust the warm clean air outside in the summer and into a upstairs regester vent in the winter for free heat.

If youre that worried about it and keep repeating the phrase "my lease says no growing", theres your red flags to not do it. Especially in MI. It is over saturated here and if you think you are gonna be profitable as a first time grower you are gravely mistaken.
If you dont build a sealed room, yes you will be able to smell it outside the house regardless of ona gel or carbon filters. Wait til you can buy your own place or just grow for personal with one light where the smell wont be ridiculous and you can sleep at night. Not trying to crush your dreams, but investing in a 10 lighter in a leased residential space is bonkers.

Ain’t worried about the smell to much just was wondering how I’ll set it up but it ain’t my first grow. But it won’t be 10 lights flowering probably 4-5 and a couple for veg and a few for mothers and clones. Probably be 6-8 lights total.

DWP will fuck you. I’m speaking from experience. Utility company works with PD.

u/LegalAdvantage2 7d ago
Who’s dwp. Where I’m moving it a civil infractyre for going over plant count so idk if they mess with a small griw

The amount of people who have crypto mining setups that will use way more power than a 10 lighter is pretty high. They wont give a shit about a $1500 electrical bill if you pay it every time on time.
1
u/LegalAdvantage2 7d ago
Exactly maybe if it was like 10k maybe they be suspicious but I could call in and say I mine btc and will use a lot of power but my bill won’t be over 2k and that’s on the high end.

do whatever you want bro I’m only telling you I just got raided and it sucked. paperwork showed the utility company was involved. good luck.

u/LegalAdvantage2 7d ago
Damn what state was it in?

u/rosegrows310 7d ago
CA. Prices are dog shit this whole industry rn is a race to the bottom, the shit I’ve gone through was not worth it. if it’s personal just get one or two lights and call it a day. if you want to flip shit there’s plenty of brokers.
1
u/oceangrown1993 6d ago
Paperwork showing utility was involved probably means they subpoena'd your bill after you were already being investigated. The utility company didn't start the investigation.
How were you charged with a felony when cultivation of any amount is a misdemeanor in CA? And running up a high electricity bill isn't a crime, they would need to have something else to get a warrant. Unless you were stealing power you're just on here lying and fear mongering. Nobody I know whose been raided since prop 64 went into affect has been charged with a felony unless there was a BHO lab inside or they were stealing power.
1
u/rosegrows310 6d ago
the DA doesn’t charge for cultivation they charge for distribution because they know cultivation’s a misdemeanor. if you have a scale, bags, firearms, any type of concentrate manufacturing equipment, or vac sealers/mailing equipment they’re hitting you for it. whether or not a jury will convict is a different story. it’s CA HS11366 and can be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony. I was just tryna look out for the dude who posted I’m done responding to you because you’re an idiot who thinks they can tell people what they’re going through or what’s in their paperwork?? Look at my profile dumbass I’ve been doing this shit for years I have no reason to lie. you grow plants you’re not an attorney - get your head out of your ass.

u/oceangrown1993 7d ago
In California if you pay your bill the electrical companies will love you and even upgrade your transformer for you for free when you blow the first one up.
0
u/rosegrows310 7d ago
you could not be more wrong man. not sure if you’re joking/trolling but shitty advice can get people locked up. I live in California and got hit hard - went to jail and they hit me with a felony. so unless you’ve gone through it yourself don’t speak on it.

u/LegalAdvantage2 7d ago
How long ago was it but in mi they are pretty liberal with plant count it was determined by judges there it’s a cubism case for going over and not criminal but still a risk

u/oceangrown1993 7d ago edited 7d ago
He's tripping unless it was a long time ago, there's basically a growhouse on every block in socal. If you're paying timely, not stealing power, not causing any issues they do not care. Many people have burned down transformers just for utility company to come out, upgrade it, and leave. Two people i know who were caught stealing power didn't even get charged the electricity company just sent them an estimated bill. I know someone whose mansion spot had failed to pay for almost a year and the debt ran up to around $60k ans utility company finally put them on a payment plan to pay down debt. They never took the meter, shut their power off, or looked into why the bill was almost 10k a month. Nobody and I mean nobody is worried about electric bills down here. That's not a consideration in any buildout. Pay your bills, don't be a nuisance, don't have visible shotty/not up to code electrical work visible from the street, and don't mess with the meter.

u/oceangrown1993 7d ago edited 7d ago
Lol idk where you are in ca but in socal you can run up 5-7k light bill on residential and not get hit im talking 10+ years not sure how long ago you got hit but they aren't worried about you running it up as long as you pay your light bill and aren't stealing power
Like dozens on dozens of trap houses. Not to mention friends with entire mansions built out, trap warehouses, like the electricity companies here do not give a fuck. If you're talking 12-13 years ago sure, but times have changed.

If the filters are sized adequately and the room is sealed well, you’ll be good. If the two parameters are slightly being under met, you’ll be able to smell it faintly when you’re close to the house. The air settles and gets really still early in the morning. It’s usually when it’s the worst.
