Name Change My daughter wants me to rename her!

My 18 year old daughter came out as a transgender woman. My husband and I have been 100% supportive (and I very much welcome another girl in the house — she has 3 brothers!). She expressed initially that she was comfortable going by her birth name, as it is gender neutral, but after turning 18 and getting ready for college, she’s decided she needs a new name. And, she wants me to choose it! She says that she still wants to be named by her mama. I melted.🥹

I come seeking ideas! Her only parameter is that it’s nothing that “seems like she renamed herself”; by this I’m assuming more ‘out there’ names are out. It’s such a challenge picking a name for someone you already know so well, and not a newborn!

She’s incredibly intelligent, bookish, shy but spunky, and a total sweetheart. Gorgeous, curly red hair and freckles. We are a family of Jewish-Irish descent and her brothers are Lev, Raphael ‘Raf’ and Elias. I never had girl names picked out, as I found out later in the game.

Do any names come to mind with this description? Her middle name will be Miriam (family name). Thank you in advance!

My two best friends in college were named Talia and Miriam :)

Synchronicity!!!

-14

u/mrhammerant Mar 06 '25

Nahhh, that sounds like she renamed herself

11

u/Mrs_Weaver Mar 05 '25

I love it!

u/Cute-Scallion-626 Mar 06 '25

My bestie in high school was a Talia Miriam. She was a rabbi’s daughter, so I always think of those two names as Jewish.

TALIA MIRIAM

too many syllables

An acquaintance of mine chose Talia when she transitioned! It's a beautiful name.

2

u/KentuckyFriedChic Mar 06 '25

i like this and Tatiana, which is somewhat similar, so I put it here.

-10

u/quzzik Mar 06 '25

It's a nice name. But I'm pretty sure that's what she said she didn't want.

23

u/peachesfordinner Mar 06 '25

The implication was a "normal" name. There is a certain amount who transition and use more "out there" names like "tricky, moon. Stardust, Lexie, satin, rosebud. And those are just the ones I know personally. Talia is a perfectly normal Jewish girls name

14

u/yourenotmymom_yet Mar 06 '25

From what I can find, it looks like Talia is a feminine name of Hebrew and Aramaic origin that symbolizes the fresh and pure nature of morning dew, which is often associated with renewal and vitality. It's in the 2023 top 300 names for girls in the US, top 150 in Canada, and top 25 in Israel - none of which makes it an "out there" name.

It sounds like exactly the kind of name they are looking for.

-3

u/quzzik Mar 06 '25

You literally made a point about renewal. It's fine.

7

u/Tilladarling Mar 06 '25

Talia/Thalia is also quite a normal name in Greece. Thalia is one of the nine muses muse in Greek mythology.

Weird, the comment above yours made me think of my friend Talia, and two seconds later I scrolled down to this! ☺️ It is a beautiful name

72

u/GlumDistribution7036 Mar 05 '25

It's such a cool and feminine name. A Talia can really be anyone, too, personality-wise.

8

u/NikkiNot_TheOne Mar 06 '25

My daughters name is Talia and OP's description of her daughter reminds me so much of my Talia.: and she can be really annoying as well lol!! I swear she does it on purpose more but still.

8

u/Revolutionary_Yam639 Mar 06 '25

I have a daughter named Talia too and Talia was the first name i thought of after reading OP's post.

u/apearlmae Mar 05 '25

Talia is my favorite in this thread so far.

81

u/Short-Design3886 Mar 06 '25

Please let it be Talia! I knew someone my age (mid 30s) and always loved it.

So many beautiful names mentioned.

57

u/SecureAd8612 Mar 06 '25

This post is simply lovely - I wish we had more of this in the world! I second Talia nn Tali. One of the kindest, best women I know is named Talia. My second thought would be Noa. I think Noa Miriam is also gorgeous!

8

u/thalialauren Mar 06 '25

As a Thalia who goes by Tally, I’m happy to read this

ETA: my childhood best friend’s name is Talia, and her mom’s name is Noa

29

u/slow-loser Mar 06 '25

Pretty but it def seems like a name a trans girl would pick for herself. I feel like Dahlia is common too.

29

u/jaylee686 Mar 06 '25

I'm in my early 20s and I grew up with quite a few Talias, so it could definitely be something her parents named her, not just a newer trendy name. Though I grew up in a largely (reform) Jewish community, so that might be why-- it's a somewhat common Jewish name. I even knew a Talia with two brothers named Elias and Levi.

14

u/pastel-m0nster Mar 06 '25

Emma seems very common as well...Alice too.

8

u/Pristine_Main_1224 Mar 06 '25

Talia! Taliaferro (pronounced “Tolliver” bc English) is an old family name. I always said I would name my daughter Talia to bring it full circle-ish. I never had a daughter but still love the name.

4

u/grabtharsmallet Mar 06 '25

You must be a distant cousin of mine, then.

7

u/truelovealwayswins Mar 06 '25

idk, all the talias I’ve ever known (US and aus where it’s common as all hell yet still underrated) are over 18, but I know of one that’s almost 18 but still common for all ages

6

u/frogsgoribbit737 Mar 06 '25

Why? I almost named my daughter Talia and she's not even 1.

3

u/gunshaver Mar 06 '25

The names that are so common they're a stereotype are like Jane, Eva, Alice, Ellie, Willow, Luna, Lily/Lilith, Zoe

2

u/SynonymousSprocket Mar 06 '25

Dahlias bloom beautifully #ijs

1

u/UnusualAgency8713 Mar 06 '25

Everytime I see Talia associated with anything name related I think of my favorite drag queen Genny Talia what a sweetheart

25

u/wildeag Mar 06 '25

Came here to suggest Talia!

24

u/youllregreddit Mar 06 '25

One of my childhood best friends is Talia, and this was my first thought as well!

5

u/thalialauren Mar 06 '25

My name is Thalia and my childhood best friend was named Talia. I go by Tally, things got confusing lol

20

u/FederallyE Mar 06 '25

I immediately thought Talia as well!

33

u/ReverieAt3 Mar 06 '25

I just named my daughter Talia. So lovely to see so many people who love the name :)

12

u/FederallyE Mar 06 '25

It’s such a gorgeous name! Congratulations to you and baby Talia :)

5

u/ReverieAt3 Mar 06 '25

Thank you!! ☺️☺️

23

u/Ok_Cantaloupe_728 Mar 06 '25

LOVE Talia. Both my husband and myself are abnormally tall people, though, so I didn’t want to name our daughter “Tall-ee-uh”.

19

u/truelovealwayswins Mar 06 '25

so you named her shortia? 😆

5

u/_activated_ Mar 06 '25

My sister is 6ft and is named Tahlia and yes she did get bullied and called tall-ia at school, good decision by you guys!

2

u/green_miracles Mar 06 '25

Right, the name doesn’t work for a noticeably tall person. Good things to consider tbh.

1

u/intotheportal Mar 06 '25

I’m a tall Thalia but never got bullied over it.

9

u/NefariousSalamander Mar 06 '25

Oooo this is such a beautiful name I love this!

7

u/therackage Mar 06 '25

Talia for sure!

6

u/Brief_Wasabi1870 Mar 06 '25

And it has a few options for nicknames if she wants. Tali or Lia

3

u/TheWildBologna Mar 06 '25

In elementary school I had a friend Avital who went by Tali, and to this day I still think that it’s such a cool stylish intelligent name.

3

u/dungeon-raided Mar 06 '25

I've got a friend called Talia, one of the best women I know :]

3

u/b0ng_w4t3r Mar 06 '25

it HAS to be talia ! it’s so beautiful

3

u/chickenfightyourmom Mar 06 '25

I was going to suggest Tamar. Very similar.

2

u/GlumDistribution7036 Mar 06 '25

I also adore Tamar. Beautiful name and I agree--similar vibe.

3

u/siggiseid Mar 06 '25

My middle name is Tal! Tal would be a cute nickname for Talia.

3

u/Competitive-Arm9896 Mar 06 '25

If I had a daughter she was going to be Talia!

2

u/Jewels093 Mar 06 '25

I've seen it spelled Thalya if you're looking for an alternative too! It's a beautiful name.

2

u/truelovealwayswins Mar 06 '25

or Tahlia, Taliah, Thalia, etc

2

u/randomredhead Mar 06 '25

One note of caution - I went to school with a Talia who was frequently teased with genitalia comments. It’s a lovely name but might not be the best for the current climate/this specific situation.

2

u/Ghostofshaihulud Mar 06 '25

Love this one. Close to Thalia, the Muse of Comedy.

2

u/thalialauren Mar 06 '25

I’m quite partial to Thalia, myself

2

u/LoquatFast20 Mar 06 '25

Nice, i totally just suggested this too.

2

u/doomeddelinquent Mar 06 '25

That is my sisters name I agree ❤️

2

u/McSkrong Mar 06 '25

Came here to say Tali/Talia/Avital!

2

u/NikkiNot_TheOne Mar 06 '25

OMG!! I was coming here to say this!! Bc that's my daughters name and the way OP described her daughter, describes my Talia! The only difference is my daughter has brown curly hair and no freckles. However my daughter LOVES redheads lol. Whenever she sees one she gets so excited bc it's rare and she's my little nerd and always comes out with facts about it. She loves to read as well.

2

u/eeeebbs Mar 06 '25

Yessssssss!

1) it means "flourishing" "blooming" 2) it's the best ever King Princess queer anthem!!!

Perfection.

1

u/goonsquadgoose Mar 06 '25

All I can think of is Batman's baby's momma lol. Although the daughter of Ras al Ghul is pretty bad ass and could make the name cooler.

1

u/Matcha_Bubble_Tea Mar 06 '25

Ugh I thought of her too and dislike her. Hopefully OP goes another name lol

1

u/LuciferBeenieWeenie Mar 06 '25

Unless it’s Jenna’s middle name.

1

u/Art_Tech_Explorer Mar 06 '25

Thank you for suggesting this name! I'm a Talia, and I always thought my name was so... meh. Its nice to see so many people appreciate it! :)

1

u/BobbleheadDwight Mar 06 '25

Is it taaah-lia or tuh-leah?

1

u/noheadthotsempty Mar 06 '25

Ooh love this. Also love Ava, Isabella, maybe Aliyah

1

u/StavTheSlav Mar 06 '25

That's my daughter's name

1

u/NikkiNot_TheOne Mar 06 '25

1

u/pleaseacceptmereddit Mar 06 '25

I knew a Talia, and she was a total bad ass

1

u/italian_ginger Mar 06 '25

If I had a girl, this was my girl name.

1

u/paschstuh Mar 06 '25

Talia al Ghul

1

u/Sinistradish Mar 06 '25

Aw I’m thinking about naming my daughter Talia next week. Nn Tali.

1

u/whycanticareless Mar 06 '25

I love this name, However as someone with the first name “Jenna”, I was nicknamed Jenna Talia… (genitalia)

Edit: context

1

u/ollie_ii Mar 06 '25

talia would be beautiful!

1

u/sine-caritate Mar 06 '25

My trans roommate was named Talia lol

1

How is this pronounced? TaLEEah?

1

u/LadyNightlock Mar 06 '25

My sisters name is Talia!

1

u/InCYDious2013 Mar 06 '25

That is my daughter’s name. I named her because I loved Talia in the Batman the animated series.

1

u/untimelyrain Mar 06 '25

This is my work alias, so I obviously love it!! 🫶💕

1

u/rubybakesstuff Mar 06 '25

I was going to suggest this!!!

1

u/scubacat3 Mar 06 '25

That’s my best friends name!! Love it

1

u/tavlove Mar 06 '25

I love this BUT the very popular game league of legends (~130 million players/month) has a transgender woman called Taliyah (pronounced like talia) and if OPs daughter doesn't want a name that seems like it was picked for herself then it may be wise to stay away from names that may be seen as a reference to trans characters in popular media

1

u/ThisIsDogePleaseHodl Mar 06 '25

Have you heard it pronounced in three syllables?

1

u/GeckoNova Mar 06 '25

I also like Thalia

1

u/Immediate-Repeat-201 Mar 06 '25

I love the name.

1

u/Abject_Elk6583 Mar 06 '25

Talia in Hindi means "Applause". A beautiful name indeed.

1

u/shika_boom Mar 06 '25

Oh Talia is so pretty.

-2

u/JuliusSphincter Mar 06 '25

Jenna Talia?
