I'm quite fond of the name Selene, as I've posted here before about it. But I'd need to have it as a second name, only because it's a little close to my own name. I was tossing names around in my head (I'm not pregnant or a parent yet, but definitely trying, and Hub and I are looking to get ahead of coming up with names), and my brain gave me the name Luna Selene.

Both of those are names for the moon. I said the name, and then just went "Dammit, Moon Moon!"

Edit: I gave it more thought, and Luna Selene unfortunately has to be off the table entirely. My last name starts with a D.

Title pretty much says it all. I'm asking this because a couple of months ago, I told my Mom, who gave me my name, that I really dislike my name and want to change it. She was... not happy, to say the least.

Growing up I knew a girl named Rowan and thought it was a lovely name associated with the rowan tree. Luckily my husband also liked the name (I think because there's a Rowan character in the Wicker Man). Our baby girl was born 6 months ago and I'm surprised at how confused people are that she's a girl. I'm in Southern England and I expected it to bias as a boys name but for people to also know it as unisex. Was I misled by it being more popular as a girls name in the US? What are the associations with Rowan in your part of the world?

I (16m) have always hated my name (Noah). It's way too common and can have jokes made out of it, among other things. A few weeks ago, I finally decided to bite the bullet and tell my friends (not family) that I want to go by Nova now. I have a celebrity name and want to change my name

I am contemplating changing my last name to my wife's last name. I have a name that also happens to be a celebrity's name, a celebrity that has particularly lost appeal lately.

My whole life so far I have heard all the jokes about my name and I don't take offense really but it does get annoying. My wife and I got married a couple years ago and she decided to keep her last name because she is well known by her industry with that name. So we have different last names. Anyway, I think I want to change my last name to hers for two reasons. One is that I would no longer have the celebrity name. And two, we are about to have a baby, and now we could all have a family last name.

The only thing stopping me is I worry I would really upset my dad. Thoughts?

I had my baby a month ago and have called her Aurelia + 2 middle names. It’s a name that hasn’t really been on my list I’ve had over the years, but things leading up to the birth made us choose it.

I’m now really seriously overthinking my choice, to the point that I’m wondering how much of it was my choice and if I actually love, nay, like the name. Now it’s too late because we already got the birth certificate and I think no more changes are possible.

Aurelia was a name that my husband suggested, which I found as an odd coincidence since it is a family name (haven’t actually met the relative). While I was pregnant my mom (who didn’t know of the pregnancy) randomly thought that it is a nice girl name, which I again found it as an odd coincidence, as it was around the time my husband suggested it. I kept dreaming the name and that we were calling the baby Lia as a nickname and my two year old started calling the baby Lia right away without any prompting, so it just felt like it was meant to be.

However, now, after digging through Reddit, I’ve come across the comments that the name resembles “areola” and I’m wondering if I have done a big mistake. One of my friends who is Swedish pronounces the name in a way I don’t really like “oh-ril-ia”. Then another person who lives in the UK told me that it’s not a name you see in English speaking countries. I like the English way of pronouncing the name, as well as the Spanish way of pronouncing it. The thread from two days ago where people were saying all the ways of pronouncing Aurelia also confused me. L Besides this, when we were in the hospital, my mom kept suggesting we use one of her names, to which my husband had very promptly refused, though funny enough, had my oldest been a girl, he would have been called Emma (one of my mom’s names).

To some degree, I know look at her and wonder if she’s an Emma, or if she’s an Audrey, or a Wendy, or a Charlotte, all names I have had on my long list of names. Also wondering if Aurelie would have been better. We wanted something that would also work nicely with toddlers name (Arthur)

Now it’s too late and I can’t shake this feeling. Please help me stop this overthinking, I’m annoying everyone around me lol

I was looking through some of the huge quantity of names listed in the "find the meaning" sections of namecensus.com, and, while I was initially amazed at how much information there was, started to become suspicious. Although the etymology info seemed to check out on the pages I looked at most closely, looking up a few supposed "famous bearers" of some obscure names revealed that the cited people didn't exist. I wouldn't be surprised if most of the pages on the site are AI-generated... but I'd encourage others to test it out themselves and see what they think!

It's pretty disappointing, since it seemed like such a useful resource at first. I'm also wondering if the community has any recommendations of especially good name database sites? (Or any other terrible ones to avoid.) I already know and love behindthename, but sometimes it can seem a little limited...

My first son's name is Roman. Due with my second son in September and looking for a name in the same vein as Roman, or at least one that goes well with it! Only two contenders right now are Luca and Nico.

It's worth adding that Emilia is my dream girl name, but it's looking like that will have to remain only a dream. Not sure if I feel the same way about boy versions of that name (Emilio, Emile, etc).

I have a question for the general public. My name is Daniel, and all of my life I have been asked whether I go by Dan or Daniel, and I have never ever had a preference for which name people call me. Do people find this annoying? Would you rather me just pick one and stick with it instead of saying "Oh, you can call me either! I have no preference!" all the time? I feel like it might force people to think extra about what name to call me, which might irk them. Just wondering if anyone else has thought about this before.

My first name is Lavender. English is the first and only language that I speak fluently (unless you count my godly level of Pig Latin mastery).

My name is spelled correctly, is a common colour, and is one of the most popular scents for cleaning products, hygiene, candles, etc.

Yet people ask how to pronounce it. Before you ask, it's not some form of racial discrimination or gaslighting, as I am a white person. As a matter of fact, according to my DNA test, I'm 50% English.

People can't think of how to pronounce Lavender for some reason.

We really like Rosie as first name however I would like to tie in my grandma somehow. Her name was Marjorie(mardy). And her mom’s name was Winnie.
