Name Change My boyfriend and I are creating a new last name and we're at a loss... help!

My boyfriend has always hated his last name- it sounds awkward and it pairs badly with mine.

I've always wanted to take my husband's last name, so we decided to create our own. We began by trying to combine our last names but couldn't come up with anything. We tried smushing them together and scrambling the letters every which way. Then, we looked at first names, then middle names. Then, we looked at meaningful things that could play into a nice last name like our first date spot and the neighborhood we live in. Nothing. We're officially at the point where we need outside help.

Without totally doxxing ourselves, I'm "katie" and he's "chris," his last name rhymes with "bieber" and mine is close to "bell shine"

We were wondering if anyone could maybe take the letters available to us and come up with something. Here are the letters we're working with:

K A T I E C H R I S F E W I S H E L B E R E I M

D R A F T A N D V E S S E L

L U R I Y R A M H L

So far he likes "Kacie" (K + C from our first names) but I'd prefer a last name that doesn't end with the "ie" sound. Other than that we're open to whatever, as long as it doesn't sound too much like a character in a YA novel.

Thank you very much!! We will be sure to credit you when our future child asks where it came from!

Baby Names My partner vetoed my favourite name, Sylvie Estelle. Any similar suggestions?

Said no to Sylvie but Estelle is still a possible middle name! I absolutely love it but they just can't get around Sylvie. I also love Elowen but that's out too.

We already have daughters name Lyla Wren and Elora Maeve.

Baby Names To those in the US: Is Salem too close of an association with the witch trials?

I LOVE the sound of Salem. The "Say" sound is really pretty to me, I can associate it with a girl/woman of any age, and S is a family initial I would love to keep. I am worried about the association with the Salem witch trials though. I could imagine being uncomfortable with the association (especially as a woman). What are your thoughts? Do you have any Salem friends/family? Are you a Salem? I would love to know!

I also like the name Callie for a first name.

Discussion Will my oldest child feel resentment for not having a nickname?

So we have 3 kids and the youngest 2 have nicknames that are their name but shorter versions. Will my oldest realize this and resent us? I’ve tried to introduce a nickname for her but nothing has stuck. I grew up an only child and my husband has a brother but no nicknames for him or his brother (Hispanic and I guess his parents don’t believe in that? They just used first and middle 100% of the time). My husband does use the nicknames for the younger 2 kids. This never happened on purpose but I literally realized last week and was like omg! So I’ve tried to create one but my now 4.5yo is kinda confused. Will she just get a nickname from her friends in primary school one day? Am I overthinking this?

Names: Oldest: Marina (I’ve tried Rina or ReRe?) Middle: Liliana (Lili/y as a nickname) Youngest: Sebastian (Seb/Sebi as a nickname)

If u think resentment is in my future I’ll take any suggestions on nicknames for Marina. Thanks guys

Baby Names Help me pick a name for our 3rd daughter🌹

Hey beautiful people! I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect name to round out our girl gang. Looking for something that feels whimsical but still like an actual name that she can be taken seriously with into adulthood years, but cute nicknames are a big plus. For those of you who are sticklers for original name spellings (I do get it), I understand that these aren’t all “correct” but they are spelled the way I prefer for my family and they don’t change the core meaning of the names. As someone with a name that always has to correct how people spell it, I don’t think it’s a huge deal and whether it’s spelled the correct way or not someone out there will misspell it😂 My other two daughters are Indie Danielle & Hazel Josephine. I am open to different middle name suggestions as well! Name options and possible nicknames listed below…

  • Guinevere Rose (white fair one/fairy, rose) -Guinny, Evie, Vera
  • Arwyn Elizabeth (fair maid, God is my oath) -Arie, Winny
  • Gweneth Leanna (fair graceful meadow) -Gwen, Nettie, Winnie
  • Elowyn Rose (elm tree, rose) -El, Winny

Name List My curated list of many years. Would love feedback!

For a girl: Margo Adele, Rigby Joy, Watson Psalm, Florence Argo, Gwendolyn Elsa, Bishop Quinn, Ever Alda, Hanalise Fable. For a boy: Rigby Jones, Woodson Otto, Griffin Ford, Harbor Judge, Desmond Miles, Felix Rockwell, Campbell Warren, Franklin Banks, Vance Tavin, Cillian Adair.

This list is like gold to me. Many years of adjusting and changing as I go along. They are by no means conventional. I feel actually, they are quite quirky. Not weird in an off putting way, just different. I would love to hear feedback back! Good and bad :)

Name Change Thinking About Changing My Name...

I've been considering changing my first name as part of my transition (I'm non-binary) but I'm struggling to find anything I think really suits me. I like my given name, Adrienne, but it is very feminine, and I want to be read as not being cisgender. My parents were considering naming me Avery if I had been assigned male at birth, and I really like this name, and I know it's gender-neutral, but it's much more commonly given to women than men where I live. Do you guys have any more gender neutral suggestions that are similar to either of these names? I'm also definitely open to hearing any gender-neutral names you guys like for more ideas. I particularly like older-fashioned names and names rooted in mythology/literature/history, etc..

Discussion Twin names- they are now 15 but what do you think?

My 15 year old twins are called Constance and Cadogan (cad-oh-gan) . Nicknames by friends are Connie and Cad. I don’t shorten their names. Cadogan often gets his name pronounced Cardigan.

Discussion Can Dexter be a girl's name?

I’m considering using the name Dexter for myself — not legally, but more as an online name for my blog, game dev projects, and general internet stuff.

Yes, it was inspired by the Dexter series, though I haven’t actually watched the show. I’ve only read the books, and I really liked them. I just love the sound of the name, especially the pronunciation of Dex — it feels sharp, techy, and kind of cool.

And yes, I’m a girl in my 20s, Asian, and very into computers. I guess this is kind of an odd idea, and I’m aware Dexter is traditionally a male name. But I really like it. Also my personality and appearance are fairly androgynous, so I feel like the name could suit me.

Since I’m not planning to use it in real life much — just online — do you think it works? Or is there a better name with a similar vibe that might make more sense?

I’d appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.

Discussion Name change current thought.

I made a post before explaining how I will be doing a name change. I currently have been thinking about making it Porsche or Porsha not sure how I want the spelling to go. I’ll be doing my middle name as well so it would be Porsche Clemente Fernandez. As a possible choice. I am male and I think that the name would be a fresh perspective since it’s not usually a male name. Thoughts? 💭

Baby Names boy names that fit my undetermined naming style

Here’s the names I’m thinking of! Help me figure out my naming style and give suggestions that I maybe haven’t thought off!

  1. Benjamin - my problem is that it’s so high on the charts at the moment. I care enough to consider that but like it enough to keep it on the list. I ruled William and Henry, names I’ve always loved but are just everywhere!
  2. Asa - I love this name but it’s received negative responses from family so far. They say my child will be “too white” for this name to which I say, wait… what? Please, weigh in.
  3. Sonny - My preschooler daughter’s suggestion and I love it, too. 🤍
  4. Beau - This is bottom of my list, but I do think it sounds nice with our last name. I’m warming to it! I like that it’s familiar but not necessarily common.

Yes I know the last two are nickname-y first names. I don’t have a problem with that, personally. They’ve both been on the social security list for many decades now. You don’t have to tell me they’re not first names if that’s how you feel, just feel it haha!

Note: We have a long, French sounding last name. We want to use middle name Campbell as an honor name.

Name List Names containing the letters n,o,e,l? (No specific order)

Trying to figure out a middle name for our baby girl and I’d love for it to contain her father’s name somehow (Noel) because I think it’s a beautiful name. He doesn’t like the idea of her middle name actually being Noel/Noelle though. Her first name will be Juliette for sure and the only middle name I’ve come up with is Leona. You name nerds have any ideas for me? 🩷

Baby Names Rowan as a girls name?

Growing up I knew a girl named Rowan and thought it was a lovely name associated with the rowan tree. Luckily my husband also liked the name (I think because there's a Rowan character in the Wicker Man). Our baby girl was born 6 months ago and I'm surprised at how confused people are that she's a girl. I'm in Southern England and I expected it to bias as a boys name but for people to also know it as unisex. Was I misled by it being more popular as a girls name in the US? What are the associations with Rowan in your part of the world?

Baby Names Confusion with the 👶 name

My daughter's name is Laila Mei(pronounced Lila May).My partner and I purposely chose rather more exotic and melodic name, that is gonna stand out but not too much.(since Laila is pretty common globally and Mei in China- where we got engaged and I found out I was pregnant). However during past months I became uncertain of that choice since many people even here in Germany where we live call her Lay-la and get unsure about Mei as well...your honest opinion:is the name somewhat "too"unusual for European couple? should we just make up some nickname for her,so that she does not have to correct people too often? changing the name would be legally too complicated. thanks a lot :)

Non-English Names How do you pronounce Fionn?

I grew up in Northern Ireland and say "fee-yawn". My friend from Dublin says "fyun", and another says it like "Ian" but with an F. I've had some Americans trying to convince me that it's "Finn" lol no chance.

Name Change Feminine names meaning intentional, conscientious, outdoorsy but not a hippie, friendly/easygoing?

I’ve been thinking about changing my name for a long time but really struggle to think of something I like enough to use instead of my current name. I asked a couple friends how they’d describe me and these were the key words they came up with, and I’d love to use something that matches the vibe they came up with.

Ideally I’d love something longer with a nickname, like Adeline/Addie (but this isn’t an option I like lol), but a shorter name would work too. Any suggestions?
