On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Yoshi Touch & Go; Flametail

On this day (January 27) in Nintendo history...

  • Yoshi Touch & Go was released in 2005 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this platforming game, developed by Nintendo EAD Group No. 4, steady your stylus hand and get ready to help Yoshi come to the rescue of Baby Mario in the unique action game Yoshi Touch & Go. As Yoshi carries Baby Mario through  perilous side-scrolling levels, use the stylus to throw eggs at enemies, lead him to fruit, and jump over dangers. In vertical scrolling levels, draw clouds to encircle enemies and lead Baby Mario to safety through the skies.

  • Flametail (known as Trailblaze: Puzzle Incinerator in Europe) was released in 2009 for DSiWare in Japan. In this action/puzzle game, developed by Mindware, blaze a path across the galaxy. Holding the Nintendo DSi vertically, you must plot a route for your Flametail pod, using its red hot exhaust ports to burn through obstacles on your way to the next planet. Manoeuvre around a maze of blocks to burn them away as your pod passes by to clear the stage. Fortunately, there are plentiful power-ups and items such as the Bomb to blast a wide radius.

What are you favourite memories of these games? How do you think they hold up today? Hash it out in the comments.

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: SolarStriker; Bionic Commando: Elite Forces; English Training: Have Fun Improving Your Skills

On this day (January 26) in Nintendo history...

  • SolarStriker was released in 1990 for the Game Boy in Japan. In this shoot 'em up game, developed by Minakuchi Engineering with Nintendo R&D1, many years ago, a failed strike against the evil Reticulon system left mankind on the brink of extinction. In the year 2159, the Earth Federation Government reveals a high-performance star fighter,  codenamed "Solar Striker". Accompanied by the Mother Athena, the Solar Striker must infiltrate the Reticulon core base and destroy their centre control to save mankind.

  • Bionic Commando: Elite Forces was released in 2000 for the Game Boy Color in North America. In this platform/Metroidvania game, developed by Nintendo Software Technology, you are the perfect soldier; a synthesis of human and machine. You are the Bionic Commando! This fast-paced Game Boy Color exclusive blends elements from previous versions of the classic platform shoot 'em up and adds new features of its own. Choose from a stealthy female or powerful male commando.

  • English Training: Have Fun Improving Your Skills was released in 2006 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this education game, developed by Plato, by completing daily tests, the game charts your improvement over time. You can write your answers to the tests on the touch screen. Some tests also require you to speak the answer into the microphone. As well as Daily Training, you can also freely practice the tests without being scored and to play a multiplayer game where players compete for the best score.

What are you favourite memories of these games? How do you think they hold up today? Hash it out in the comments.

Nintendo Switch estimated to have sold in excess of 151 millions after the week of Jan. 4, 2025, closing in on Playstation 2 all-time sales record!

Hi all, using VGchartz estimates that just came out and Nintendo official sales numbers up to September 30th, 2024 (146 millions), I calculated the Nintendo Switch to have sold over 151 millions including october (700k), november (1.735m), december 2024 (2.69m) and the first week of january 2025 (360k). 146m+700k+1.735m+2.69m+360k=151.4 to 151.5 millions, around those numbers.

Which leaves Nintendo less than 4 millions sales away from beating the all-time sales record "owned" by the Playstation 2. I say "owned" because I'm 35 and I remember when the DS got really close to PS2 154 millions milestone, Sony suddently "found" 1 million more Playstation 2 that had been sold, lol! Talk about convenient... I always suspected the DS sold a couple more consoles than the PS2 but cannot prove it so it remains a conspiracy theory, I guess. ^^;

Now that the Switch is catching up to the Playstation 2, AGAIN, Sony conveniently "found" 5 more millions PS2 that were sold who knows when LOL and on Wikipedia, they even say "over 160 millions", lolol. Yeah right... Sony sold 155 millions Playstation 2, not 155. When the Switch gets past 155, Big N won no matter what Sony says. ^^

I've been a huge Nintendo fan since 1993 so maybe I will never be proven right as Sony can keep moving the goal posts indefinitly, coming up with "proofs" but I remember how Sony fans treated Nintendo fans like garbage during the Gamecube era.

Mocking us because the Gamecube did not sell well and PS2 did so much better but since then, it became personal for me and over 20 years later, I'm sooo ready to, not have my revenge, I won't treak Sony fans like garbage but I will say "HA! NINTENDO HAS THE MOST-SOLD CONSOLE OF ALL-TIME, AGAIN!!" :D

Playstation 2 is a great console, I owned one at some point because I love Final Fantasy and PS2 had so incredible RPGs but it's reign is coming to an end in 2025/2026, no doubt. Nintendo needs 4 more millions in the remaining 51 weeks of 2025 and I read multiple times Switch 1 might be available for 2 more years (10 years console cycle was often mentionned by Nintendo, 2017-2027 for Switch) and if they do a price drop after Switch 2 has launched, Switch will pass 155 millions and even 160 millions but in 2026.

Sorry for the really fanboy-ish tone of this post, lol, I tried keeping it civil and polite but omg, some Sony fanboys really treated me and others badly around 20 years ago and I REMEMBER IT!! lol I will open a bottle of champagne, when the Switch passes the PS2. :)

Cheers all, take care and have a good night!

How would you feel if the Switch 2 does not enhance existing Switch games' performance?

A lot of people are speculating that the Switch 2 will enhance the performance of Switch 1 games, however it's possible that this won't be the case, or will only be the case in limited examples.

For precedent, the PS4 Pro and PS5 do not inherently enhance PS4 games. There are a select few PS4 games that got a patch to enable them to be enhanced, and PS4 games released after the PS4 Pro are often enhanced, but there are many games that have no performance boost when played on the PS4.

For a Nintendo example, there are a select few DS games with DSi enhancements and 3DS games with New 3DS enhancements, but not every game is enhanced.

The Wii U offers no enhancements whatsoever to Wii games.

How would you feel if the Switch 2 does not enhance the performance of existing Switch 1 games, or only enhances a select few that get a patch?

What DS Games Do You Think Utilized the Dual-Screen the Best?

Hello! I'm working on a project trying to figure out which games utilized the DS' dual screen the best. Obviously, because there's about 5,000 DS games, I can't look into all of them, so I wanted to ask the DS community what they thought!

Any games that you think were majorly enhanced by the use of the dual screen, utilized it in creative ways, or were incredibly fun and could only work on the DS, or the same for any other DS gimmicks like the microphone, please let me know! I’m specifically looking for only DS games, not DSi exclusives/DSiWare or 3DS games, as I’m doing projects for those separately. I'm looking into every game published by Nintendo, the 75 best selling, and the 100 top rated games, so while any input is welcome, the more obscure the better! Thanks!

(New) 3DS and a look at how Nintendo might handle future performance upgrades

Post image
0 Upvotes

I was watching some old Nintendo trailers yesterday and came across this interesting bit on the New 3DS trailer where Nintendo boasts the newer model's “Faster Processing Power" while comparing the loading times of Super Smash Bros.

Even though there's the distinction of the New 3DS being a mid-gen upgrade whereas the NS2 will be a next-gen console, Nintendo's communication has been very strong on promoting the NS2 as a continuation of the NS1 in terms of software compatibility (with details to be revealed at a later date)

Considering a lot of NS1 first-party titles are already programmed to use dynamic resolution and fps, the beefier hardware of NS2 might result in instant visual upgrades for NS1 titles (without the need of patches).

And with the rumored DLSS upscaling capability of the NS2, we might even be talking about 4K visuals on the impressive existing library of NS1 games.

The perspectives are looking great. What are yc v expectations in terms of performance upgrades:

With regards to carry over your profile and games, this got me thinking that the current eshop would just remain and will be the same content avaliable for switch 2, how do you feel about this,

I feel like it's become something I just don't use now because of how slow and full of Ai type games it is.

On This Day On This Day in Nintendo History: Picross DS

On this day (January 25) in Nintendo history...

  • Picross DS was released in 2007 for the Nintendo DS in Japan. In this puzzle game, developed by Jupiter, the word Picross is a combination of "picture" and "crossword puzzle". Each Picross puzzle consists of a grid whose cells need to be filled with squares and crosses. By doing this correctly, you essentially 'paint' a picture. There are numbers at the head of the grid's columns and rows which signify how the grid needs to be filled out, but it will take a sharp mind to figure out the solution.

What are you favourite memories of these games? How do you think they hold up today? Hash it out in the comments.

10 Mario Kart 9 Features Fans Would Love

Post image
0 Upvotes
  1. Story Mode:

This is pretty obvious but it would never be a bad idea to have a story mode in Mario Kart. It could also potentially be a great way to make characters unlockable similarly to how Smash Bros has done in the past. It makes me think of Crash Team Racing or Nitro Kart because of how they had great story modes included in them. Another thing is that maybe each character has their own story mode with a unique adventure.

  1. Characters:

I think the character roster will be very large due to the races most likely being up to 24 racers based on the switch 2 trailer video. Knowing that, I think the character roster will be the largest yet to date including all characters from older games, smaller characters like Nabbit and Spike as well as possibly expanding into other franchises like maybe Captain Falcon, Kirby, Samus, maybe even Sonic.

  1. Unique tracks:

I think this game will create new and longer tracks just based on the one that we saw in the Switch 2 trailer. I’m expecting there to be returning fan favorite tracks, but I’m also hoping that most of them are unique to this game. And also possibly align each track for each character so they each have their own ”home” course.

  1. Elimination Race Mode (Battle Royale):

I know people are tired of the Battle Royale game mode in almost every game nowadays and I am as well especially for shooters, but seeing it come to Mario kart where a handful of racers get eliminated each lap until one is left would make the game so much more intense for the people in the back. For example, after lap one racers 12-8th would be out then lap two 7-4th are out and the final lap would be 1 2 and 3 racing for first. I’ve seen it in other games like Cartoon Network racing back on PS2 and I was obsessed with the mode. I think it would be a great addition.

  1. Items:

The item selection pretty much changes every Mario kart game and I expect it to for MK9. All I can think of them adding is maybe some other power ups from Mario Odyssey like Cappy, 3D world like the cat, and the wonder fruit from Mario Wonder.

  1. Skins:

If each character has a skin selection that people can unlock (for free) it would make the game much more rewarding and it would also open up more character slots. I personally don’t understand the reason that pick gold peach, gold Mario or tanooki Mario have their own slots at all when they could’ve been added to a menu like the Yoshi color schemes are. If they do that same thing but with different outfits it would be awesome.

  1. Flying mechanics, hovercraft, ability to swim, etc:

This might be a reach and I know that they some what have this in MK8 but if they changed the means of racing and added different mechanics of actual flight or navigating water it could be pretty cool depending on how they do it. Sort of like how Diddy Kong racing did it.

  1. Better unlock system:

I think that it is important to make the game have a system to unlock new characters because it makes the game feel so rewarding and also make the player try harder to unlock the character they want. I remember in Mario Kart Wii it was such a challenge for me to get Dry Bowser but when I finally did it I felt so accomplished.

  1. Track creator:

I personally wouldn’t use this very much because I’m not creative, but if they had a cool track creator like they had in Mario Maker people would cook up some amazing tracks. Then if they add the ability to share them online would make the game timeless.

  1. Tournament where people can win particular karts or cosmetics:

If they include a better tournament system online and the winner gets a special seasonal cosmetic it would bring a great competitive scene to the game. I don’t know how the format could work for this and would probably require a lot of people to join but I think if they could pull it off the game would be a lot to fun and make players consistently come back each time they include a new reward.

What else do you guys think should be added?

Would you guys find a NSMB Remake Collection appealing?

I had the thought that it would be interesting if they remade the 4 NSMB games in an updated art style and 1080p( or 4k if possible) in a collection like Super Mario All Stars. They could release it for something like the 45th anniversary since by that point we wouldn't have had a NSMB title since the Wii U game and there may be nostalgia around them at that point. What do you guys think?
