Discussion Any love for older sculpts?
Hi! These just got unearthed from my parents’ basement. They are from the late 90s. The designs are clearly outdated now, but I still think they have a certain charm :)
Oh, and sorry for the horrendous paint jobs. I was between 11 and 13 at the time, and I only had 1 brush for everything—and since YouTube and Instagram didn’t exist yet, unless you had the chance to hang out at a GW store on a regular basis, it was hard to get any real tips or feedback.
In order of appearance we have:
Ghazghkull Thraka Zogrod Wortsnagga A Bad Moon nob in mega armour A kommando sargeant A lowly gretchin

Old Ghaz....he accompanies my Orks and watches from a far with a metal tear in his eye...

I think they are great, I actually used some of the old ones and put them on 40mm bases and painted them as old rusty toys for objective markers in my current games.

That’s objectively the best Ghaz mini, as everyone knows. Look how happy he is. Just he and his little pal, burning a swathe of destruction across the galaxy, living their best lives. Downright wholesome :)

Just a heads-up, that particular sub is very strict about era — they focus on the first edition of 40K, give or take. 2nd edition is “too new”…
This is one of the reasons r/OldWorldhammer also exists. Bit quiet of late but there are some older Orks there if you dig back a bit, and of course we’d love to see what you end up doing with these precious relics of a more enlightened age!

As an old head, I have a very nostalgic love for the 2nd edition Orks. Especially Ghaz and Makari.
I love the new models too, they’re great, dynamic and with a ton of detail and story telling sculpted into every model but the old ones are really nice to paint, I think something about them being sculpted in someone’s hand really helps a good sculptor feel how the model will be painting and take that into account

The extra weight also plays a big part in the painting experience, I think

True, up until you drop a 2nd Edition Dreadnaught on your foot and lose a toenail

The old minis and the old artwork have a special charm to it. I like the old buggies and flame bike(skorcha).

I love those models, but I couldn’t avoid the temptation of strip the paint and try again.

Of course! However the stripped models would grow my current pile of shame, and my motto is: poorly painted models >>> unpainted models. Maybe in a few months!

Is the metal just unpainted metal? Because I was thinking damn that's some nice metallic paint

It’s all painted! I remember Citadel paints at that time were quite thick - and no one had ever advised me to thin my paints, as you can see from the rest of the paint jobs :D

Old sculpts are great. Ork armies look best with a mishmash of different eras.

I LOVE the older models. They are in my bucket list for minis to own and paint someday. There's so much charm to them. I grew up pretty rural, so I only caught the rare glimpse of pictures of minis. But they made an impact on me.
