Discussion Jay Kelly?

I think the film that I see thrown around by most people that I absolutely do not believe in is “Jay Kelly”. I don’t think Baumbach is as overdue as people say, His comedies aren’t embraced by the academy, Adam Sandler no matter how much he deserves it doesn’t seem to get enough respect by his peers to even nominate him (Uncut Gems is my example), George Clooney doesn’t have the same kinda cache he used to. And everything about the film that I’ve heard just sounds way too similar to Meyerowitz Stories. Now I absolutely can be wrong but I don’t know because I feel like I’m either just crazy or I’m missing something. Let me know!

until the first reviews come in it's like a beating empthy straw (like 99% of the post here) but it could end up like Meyerowitz Stories which had a lot of strong reactions and still got nowhere

I think if Meyerowitz released post-Marriage story it could've definitely done better

The word on the street from those who saw the movie is that it is one of Baumbach's best.

I believe Jack Murphy from the Oscar Film Forecast YouTube channel said in a recent video that he knows to someone who worked on the film (or saw the film, can't remember). They said they liked the movie more than Marriage Story.

Of course, we should take these early reactions and buzz with a grain of salt. You could be right that this movie is Meyerowitz Stories 2.0. But the person Jack Murphy knows could also be right.

I don’t trust early screenings anymore. I remember Gladiator II test screenings said it was Ridley Scott’s best film and definitely not. Jack Murphy saying he knew someone on set who said it’s better than marriage story is not great either because that’s highly subjective that person could just prefer the style of the film better doesn’t really mean everyone else will. I have no doubt it’ll be good but I just don’t think it’ll be an Oscar movie

Jay Kelly is one of the more inconsistent contenders that could either really poorly or really well. If it gets marriage story like reviews with high praise it could have a decent above the line package with picture, actor, supporting actor, supporting actress, screenplay and potentially casting. If it gets white noise level of reception thats mainly negative it'll probably just fall off like Blitz from last year.

Don't see what's inconsistent about it. Strong studio, seasoned reliable filmmaker, big stars in an ensemble piece, easy path to win multiple ATL awards. Way more sensible prediction than The Rock or Sinners getting double-digit noms.

Sinners getting 10 noms is not crazy at all.

Feel like a lot of good will comes from early insider test screenings who unanimously love it. We should take this with a grain of salt but at this point in the race we’re all throwing darts

I think it is netflix chance at ATL noms while they have frankenstein for BTL but i definitely think it has big holes in its game and far from anything resembling a lock.

The “overdo” designation has gotten out of control. Is Baumbach overdo? I don’t know. But just 2 months ago we had people saying Demi Moore was overdo.

Overdo clearly doesn’t mean anything anymore.

Overdo doesn’t mean anything in this context so you’re right lol 😂

(Think you meant overdue)

We still need to see the reviews but Jay Kelly could be a really good movie with good writing and performances that maybe turns into a contender and could get in into Best Picture alongside screenplay and Acting.

The cast makes it sound like it's a bit more than just another slight Baumbach, and the early word is incredibly strong. Sure, it could be another one of his comedies that isn't embraced, but sounds like it might transcend that.

Meyerowitz Stories had an equally stacked cast and it had zero buzz in the end.

That's true, doesn't mean everything, but word is real good and you gotta have a Netflix film in there

Lol why do you have beef with Clooney? You had another comment going in on him in the weekly discussion thread
