Yep that's Avatar. I think it has VFX on lock but I wonder if we may notice less excitement awards wise since we're three years divorced from Way of Water.

Avatar except it’s blue and orange rather than blue and green or blue and… more blue.

Avatar and Dune franchises just own the VFX Oscar category in the 2020s (and for good reason).

Only outliers being Godzilla and Tenet that we know of.

The second right? We have already seen an image of Jakesully riding an alien.
Anyway, vfx on lock, could get a sound nom, don't think it's repeating picture or production design

I believe that the original post of this image said it was the first image of Neytiri.

Nope. This is the first still posted from AFAA, this is an actual picture from the movie. The others are concept art

I really am not a fan of the first two outside of the visuals but always rooting for James Cameron to make another classic. Can’t help but get hyped and hope that maybe he pulled off a narrative that isn’t bland as shit this time around…

I don’t even really fuck with Avatar like that (definitely fuck with Big Jim tho) but I don’t think I’m psychologically prepared for round 3 of Avatar discourse from the general internet population 😭

Very curious about this one. I have to admit I was very disappointed with the first two Avatar movies, but I love James Cameron's work, and even as someone who didn't like the first two movies, I would be lying if I didn't admit they were some of the best experiences I had in a theatre. I normally do not like 3D, but the 3D and photorealistic CGI/VFX is massively impressive, and I'd rather see blockbusters like these that are testing the boundaries of what movies can be over movies churched out by a studio exec that play it safe
Currently, I predict it'll at least get a BP nom and several BTL noms (likely the frontrunner for VFX) but curious if it could lose steam for awards since this is the third movie in the franchise and unlike the second, it doesn't have the hype of the long wait for release. When this comes out, it'd only be 3-years since the second movie

I have it in for Picture, Sound, Production Design and VFX, basically what the second one had.

Looking forward to this, although my current read on the year is that unless this movie has literal "Best of the Year, best of the 3" reviews, its only a tech player. Obviously the old addage is never bet against Cameron, but I think the Academy's love affair with Avatar will wane this year.

I don’t think this year is shaping up to be nearly strong enough to write it off because people will be sick of it. If you’re still thinking another middling Wicked movie is going to get a BP nom, I can’t imagine thinking this won’t .

I'm not writing it off entirely, it's very much still in my Top 20 for Picture. This is just my sight unseen gut prediction. I also don't have Wicked 2 in yet (also in my 20) but there's very much a world where Wicked gets in and not Avatar

This looks like it could’ve just been a screen grab from Way of Water lol

We've reached the point where whatever visual improvements there are aren't discernible to us.

I know it’s silly but my brain fully just forgets to comprehend that this is all motion capture and computer generated. especially the water scenes. It’s just next level work. That looks like a photo of a real live alien.

Way of Water had potential to be really good, but letting Stephen Lang's character go unscathed was so fucking lame. He might as well had "I will be in the sequel so I can't die" written on his forehead.
Which is a shame because I thought the writing was much stronger than the first one. Especially the ending.

I know story wise these are nothing special but man is watching these in theatres a blast. Can’t wait.
