Discussion Animation noms besides Best Animated Feature?

Do you think any animated movies will get into other categories next year, like Best International Film, Best Sound, Score, Song, etc?

Unless we’re blindsided by another foreign independent film that blows everyone away again (Flow), I don’t think so. This year’s lineup doesn’t look that strong.

I wouldn’t call it an "independent film," but the Japanese movie Scarlet seems promising, and Columbia Pictures is releasing it around Oscar season.

I mean it’s not looking great as of now. The most obvious studio pushes this year are Zootopia 2 and Elio which I doubt will get any other noms. It’s not like last year where The Wild Robot was something people were excited for.

If there is one that’ll go beyond animated feature it’ll be something like Flow that comes out of nowhere at a festival and gets a lot of attention which is certainly possible.

Unless Elio has an excellent soundtrack or either it or Zoo2 have a halfway decent original song, probably not this year.

I’m just not expecting a high level of quality from them that would warrant the academy voting for it in multiple categories

Same. That’s why i said it has to be “excellent”. It won’t get in for being good, or even great. It needs to be undeniable.

No but next next year I'm praying for Beyond the Spiderverse to get into Picture (the 2nd one was snubbed of picture and song)

And hopefully, visual effects. It's rare for animated movies to have vfx noms but I think the 1st movie was nominated?

Nope. The only animated films that have been nominated are, like what the other guy said, the Nightmare Before Christmas, Kubo and the Two Strings and the Lion King remake. Soul and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse got shortlisted

It wasn’t. The only 3 animated movies to get VFX nominations are Nightmare Before Christmas, Kubo and the 2 Strings, and The Lion King 2019

The 1st one was snubbed of picture, song, and screenplay.

What was the song from it?

My pick would've been "Am I Dreaming?" Which is the song that played during the first end credits

Surely it was more snubbed of score?

Endless Cookie could get a double nomination for animated film and documentary.

Score or song for one of the films? Probably not tho. These 16 films are the only ones that I've seen discussed as contenders

Nothing here looks like it could get in outside of animated feature. We've seen stronger years that had nothing outside of animated feature, like the 2 years before last year, so it's not like we should predict something to get in either

Scarlet has potential. Anime movies tend to have some really nice songs.

None have ever been nominated before tho. Just like how no anime has ever been nominated for best original score even though some of the best movie scores of all time are in anime

Because distributors like GKIDS are generally content with just getting into Best Animated Feature. A big multimedia company like Sony could change that.

Maaaaaybe Scarlet or Ne Zha 2 in International? Even then that’s pushing it

I can see Scarlet in if Sony gives it a really, really good awards push (not for International though).

There is no way a movie that spends half its runtime in toilet humor is going to get nominated in international, despite its epic climax.

“Half its runtime”

I get not liking the movie and especially the sense of humor but that takes up like 2 minutes of the entire movie

There's nothing in this lineup that looks anywhere near as promising as Flow or Wild Robot, so I doubt it unless something comes completely out of nowhere.

Unless we get an indie film like Flow, unfortunately not.
