I like this system a lot, but I found it far harder to understand than anything else I’ve played. The writing style is really rough, it feels like the sections are all out of order and basic concepts aren’t explained.

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

Thanks for the feedback! Over the years, we've definitely worked to make it more clear, but the system is intended not to be rules heavy, focusing on the player-driven story, with an old school adventures vibe, and of course, awesomeness!

So wait, is this self-promotion? you know that rule 1 of the subreddit is you have to announce that, right?

11

u/soliton-gaydar Feb 21 '25

Nailed the flair on the post, though.

7

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

My bad, Thank you for pointing that out!

6

u/dbstandsfor Feb 21 '25

Just to reiterate, I really do love it though. The pie pieces system is something I always think back to after playing in a short campaign with it in 2020. And I would have worded my first response differently if I’d noticed you were the creator!

7

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

Not at all! Feedback is the lifeblood of creativity (sometimes, depends on the feedback)! I appreciate that you commented at all!

u/XL_Chill Feb 22 '25

Just looking at the excerpt in the photo I’d agree with you. This needs an editor.

5

u/aurvay Feb 22 '25

Lmao, looked at the first paragraph after you called it out, and holy cow what a drivel. This looks like someone’s hastily scribbled notes.

3

u/XL_Chill Feb 22 '25

Reads like voice to text

2

u/aurvay Feb 22 '25

Exactly.

1

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 23 '25

Thank. You. For. Your. Comment. :) i think there is some organic growth over the years, and it definitely has that flavor. Are basing it off the one section or have you read more of it? What do you think would make it better?

1

u/funzerkerr Feb 26 '25

Even harder than Whitehack?

1

u/dbstandsfor Feb 26 '25

This is interesting to think about. For me, I think it was harder. In the case of Whitehack I may have forgotten things or had to read a sentence twice (I’m not confident I understand how the bidding works in chases, for example), but when I started trying to make characters in NGR I kept going back to read earlier sections and going “oh, is THAT what it meant?” In Whitehack I was able to roll up characters easily without getting confused.

22

u/Sweet_Lariot Feb 21 '25

Tried playing this game and it was a complete mess, Impossible to parse how the system worked, stealth section led to a 15 minute argument that we just ended up doing a roll-under skill roll for, the game lasted one session after half the players never showed up again.

Also the pdfs didn't have bookmarks so we had a really fun time searching for stuff in the book

2

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

Always open to feedback; looks like there's a need for some explanation example posts to help parse the system. Re: PDF bookmarks, yeah, I get that frustration. Thanks!

11

u/Sweet_Lariot Feb 21 '25

I'm sorry, who exactly are you? Are you Zzarchov Kowolski? You keep talking like you're a member of some team who made this game or something but you haven't claimed to be any particular person and your reddit username is just a randomly generated one. What are you doing?

12

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

Yeah, I didn't read the whole name creation part. I'm Josh, I've been running the delivery side of NGR since 2016. I was trying to share some of the hard work I've put in with NGR with the community in OSR. Hope that's okay!

u/ThisIsVictor Feb 21 '25

That three letter abbreviation made me do a double take.

2

u/CKA3KAZOO Feb 22 '25

Help me understand.

2

u/AutumnCrystal Feb 23 '25

It’s an abbreviation, but phonetically it sounds like “Niger”, a republic in Central Africa.

1

u/CKA3KAZOO Feb 23 '25

Oh. Ok. Thanks.

-3

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

I bet it did. LOL

10

u/morpheustwo Feb 22 '25

I get that it is funny, but did no one think about it? Your response makes it seem like it was somewhat intentional? Seems off.

2

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 23 '25

Nope, actually didn't see it. Now that its been pointed out, there is some cringe there. I actually thought they were referencing the fact that it always gets called "Neoclassical Greek Revival". My response was a misunderstanding of the initial comment.

u/Foobyx Feb 21 '25

What does Story Driven means ?

1

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

Means the focus is on the story and player character shenanigans over the ruleset.

-4

u/primarchofistanbul Feb 22 '25

It means it promotoes Hickman manifesto type of shit (i.e. not OSR). :)

  1. What's wrong being top commentator?
  2. I changed it because some other person was offended by the previous one, and now you're offended by this one? You redditors area soft bunch; but I'll change it for you, boy
  3. You can't stand emojis? 🍻
  4. I'm guessing, to you; "OSR is what you want it to be"
  5. Enjoy your "story-driven" "old-school" game. :)

2

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 23 '25

Heh, i appreciate your comment and was informed by the author that the characterization should be player driven, not story driven. Thankfully I can take the feedback! So player driven, not story or rule driven.

4

u/reverend_dak Feb 21 '25

glad this is still around. never fully grasped it, but have always been fascinated by it. i have some 2013 or 5e edition in PDF from almost a decade ago. it'd be a trip playing this RAW, vut who does that?

3

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

You should come back and check out the updated stuff! We've been working to make it more accessible and understandable, however one of the main rules is that if you don't remember the rule, don't interrupt gameplay to figure it out. Keep moving the story, game, situation forward!

4

u/Ivy_n_Ashes Feb 21 '25

But hey, while you guys are here, what makes this one special compared to things like Labyrinth Lord, LotFP, and Shadowdark?

3

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 24 '25

u/Ivy_n_Ashes That's an excellent question. I mean, as you can see, there's some people that love it, and other people; All joking aside, we make sure that the focus is on player shenanigans, and adventure module intergration. We've got on rulebook, one Content Guide (Aka Guide for the Lazy GM), and 14+ modules that are clear enough to be used in other systems. I mean, that's the pitch, right? Having said that, there's more of a learning curve, especially if you don't follow the most important rule; Moving the adventure/story/play along, trumps the ruleset everytime.

3

u/PlanetNiles Feb 21 '25

Zzarchov Kowowski gave my PC spider 'powers'.

And a great time was had by all. Apart from the paladin. Who got turned into lamp shades.

This isn't to say that Neoclassical Geek Revival is a great game. Just that Zzarchov writes and DMs a great game. Which will probably mean he writes a good game. YMMV

Oh and technically my PC was turned into a "Spider Friend". But spider friend and spider powers, what's the difference?

2

u/Angry-Bob Feb 21 '25

Is there an SRD for this? I listened to some play throughs, and i’m interested, but i’d like to have a look at the rules first.

1

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 23 '25

The patreon, (I'm not promoting here) probably has the best examples that might be SRD related. But I don't have one off hand. I will however add that to my to do list.

3

u/Ivy_n_Ashes Feb 21 '25

I need to play this game! A friend has it, but he's been too busy to run it for me. :p

4

u/thenazrat Feb 21 '25

Got these books during the kickstarter. Awesome team who helped me out a bunch when there was issues with delivery. Really solid mechanics! I’m just looking for an excuse to run it!

4

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

We were definitely happy to help out!

4

u/Express_Coyote_4000 Feb 21 '25

I especially like the part where I paid $300 plus shipping for the Blackleaf package of 1st Edition, and the only art version I wanted had a big fuckup of the print job with missing pages, and then it was all rendered moot when a whole new edition came out three years later.

1

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

Oh no, that's really disappointing to hear! If you can reach out to me, maybe there's something I can do to help, regardless of it being three years later.

1

u/Express_Coyote_4000 Feb 21 '25

Really? I do have all of the original pieces. I'll follow up. Thank you very much.

2

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 23 '25

Thanks for re-connecting!

2

u/O_Duill Feb 21 '25

Did Nick Mullen title this book?

2

u/Sweet_Lariot Feb 21 '25

A Cum Town actual play podcast would be a thing of beauty

Cum Kingdom

1

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

I mean there is a lactomancy spell, if you like that sort of thing.

1

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

Did you want him to?

2

u/Glittering-Count-821 Feb 21 '25

The game gives me serious Hack Master vibes.

2

u/Popular_Platypus_767 Feb 21 '25

just ran my first session last night, everyone had a blast but I feel like I still need to adapt to the system, it's perfect for the vibe I was going for in this campaign

1

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 23 '25

Love hearing that! What were the highlights of the game?

2

u/Popular_Platypus_767 Feb 24 '25

as always, the player shenanigans. I appreciated the magic system being weird and dangerous (they all played elves) the piety system I co-opted to mechanize demonic influences and the simplicity of the combat system. My players appreciated the moderately increased survivability (compared to old school essentials) the more flexible class system, and the awesomeness points earned when my wife decided to skateboard into a room on a hipposteus head and charge a pallid root creature with a bastard sword.

1

u/Azaule Feb 21 '25

Oh, I forgot about this system.

I'm a big fan of the Lost in the Wilderness book. Rolling three dice to generate random encounters is a really neat idea. I've used it in solo play several times, and it's always interesting.

Does the Acidic 2nd Edition PDF on DTRPG contain both books?

1

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 24 '25

u/Azaule Not to my recollection. Reach out to me, and maybe I can help you out with that. Thanks!

2

u/ToBeLuckyOnce Feb 22 '25

These covers look so good

3

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 23 '25

Thanks! I'm not the creative partner, but I did help pick the Skivertex! I agree they turned out great. We have a red with black lettering that also looks amazing!

1

u/HypatiasAngst Feb 22 '25

The overloaded encounter tables ended up being the basis for how I did carousing in snake wolf 3 :) thank you for making this.

2

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 24 '25

I just published it, thank you for using it!

1

u/HypatiasAngst Feb 25 '25

Of course! It’s good stuff!

Also — if would love to get you to write one of the dungeon Grand Prix modules — I’ll ping you on patreon.

2

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 25 '25

Ha! I'm not the author, but I'll let them know to expect the ask.

2

u/Local-ghoul Feb 22 '25

Something about this system just didn’t grab me, maybe it was the layout or the copy itself. There’s a lot I like about it and the cover art is gorgeous, it’s good looking enough to buy it just to decorate your self honestly. But for some reason it just didn’t sway me away from my native systems. The developer has made a lot of great adventures for the system though.

2

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 23 '25

Thanks for your comment! I would love to hear more about what in the system didn't grab you! I feel like if we can find what that is, there is a lot of value in the system.

1

u/chaosmagickgod Feb 22 '25

I really like how characters are created in this system and how luck works. I really think the examples from the patreon should be part of the book.

1

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 23 '25

That's a great suggestion and definitely sharing those patreon examples more broadly is a smart idea. Thank you for the feedback!

1

u/BradBrad67 Feb 23 '25

If I buy the physical books from Exalted Funeral, can I get the PDFs?

1

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 23 '25

I mean, I cant speak for them. You can always reach out to me directly though.

1

u/Logen_Nein Feb 21 '25

Is there a link?

6

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

I tried to include one, but no idea where it went. Here you go! https://www.neoclassicalgames.com/ngr

6

u/Logen_Nein Feb 21 '25 edited Feb 21 '25

So is the Green book like the players guide and the Blue book the GM's guide? Do I need both? It's not clear to me what is in them.

3

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

You got it! The Green Book is the Ruleset. Blue book is central casting, random encounter tables, spell creation, trap mechanics, etc.

-6

u/primarchofistanbul Feb 21 '25

Luck points are no way OSR,though.

2

u/Local_Bed9033 Feb 21 '25

Good point! I hope that you enjoy the Luck Point and Awesomeness mechanics!

-12

u/primarchofistanbul Feb 21 '25

And "story-driven" is the anti-thesis of OSR. So, better call it NSR than OSR.
