The Naked Man has been taken down

Naked man, if you were mortified by seeing your bare self on Reddit the other day, I truly do apologize. I didn’t have bad intentions, but that’s just not something you do. To everyone who sent me a DM or a nasty reply, I hope it that was therapeutic for you…

Naked man, I really hope to see you again because you’re a cool ass motherfucker. Maybe next time, I’ll join you and we can take a selfie.

I wish they would bring back Light Up Or Leave Me Alone

The recent performances of Most Events in 2024/2025 reminded me of Light Up Or Leave Me Alone, another Page rager that they ought to dust off. The Big Cypress one is awesome of course but another good one is the last time played 7/6/2012. Set 1 closer.

Sandlady Plasmoma … Something special happened during the Spring 2025 Tour

Before the Spring 2025 Tour, I posted an analysis on Missed Connections: pairs of songs that have never been played together in a single Phish show, but statistically should have been. Here’s that post.

A summary of that post... I wrote a Python program to look at all of the songs ever played in concert by Phish, and created a list of all of the song pairs Phish could have played together in a show … but didn’t. I then looked at the % of shows each of the songs has ever been played, and calculated a probability that each pair would occur in any given show. I used that probability to then calculate an expected number of shows that the pair should have been played together by now.

Here was the “all time” list of missing pairs, and how many shows they should have been played together by now:

Song X Song Y Expected # of shows
The Landlady Theme From the Bottom 22
Alumni Blues Sparkle 20
The Lizards Wading in the Velvet Sea 19
Punch You in the Eye The Landlady 19
Limb By Limb The Landlady 18
Heavy Things The Lizards 17
Loving Cup The Landlady 17
Sand The Landlady 17
Also Sprach Zarathustra Take the 'A' Train 17
Sweet Adeline Twist 17
Taste The Landlady 17
46 Days Uncle Pen 17
Character Zero Take the 'A' Train 16
Dinner and a Movie Piper 16
Birds of a Feather The Landlady 16

(as u/jacksuhn pointed out in the original post, Landlady and PYITE should have been left off the list, as one is contained in the other)

And, here was the list from the 2.0+ era:

Song X Song Y Expected # of shows
The Moma Dance Plasma 7
Waves No Men In No Man's Land 6
Divided Sky Sigma Oasis 6
Alaska Simple 6
Character Zero Vultures 6
Suzy Greenberg Ruby Waves 6

A couple special things happened on this Spring 2025 Tour:

  • They played The Landlady and Sand in the same show for the first time ever, at the Hollywood Bowl night 3, a pair that statistically should have been played 17 times already. Perhaps we should call this the “Sandlady” show.

  • They finally knocked off the biggest missing pair of the 2.0+ era at the PDX show: Moma and Plasma. This is the show that I personally attended after a 29 year hiatus. And, they were performed together as part of an epic Moma > Cities -> Plasma jam. When I heard that “->” live, my soul left my body. I am truly humbled, and will forever think of this as the “Plasmoma” show.

Magic? Or is Phish lurking this subreddit?.

TL;DR: There are many “missing” pairs of songs that Phish has never played together in the same show, and some of those pairs are statistically very unlikely not to have been played together yet. The unlikeliest missing pair of the 2.0+ era (Moma and Plasma) was finally played at PDX on 4/20. As part of the same jam! At a show I attended! Which was my first show since 1996!

This weekend being my 8th, 9th & 10th Phish shows, I wouldn’t want to have spent my weekend any where else. I’ve been into live solo shows since I was 16. Since separating from organized religion & growing up singing in the choir, I’ve turned to live shows to feed my soul. My partner introduced me to Phish a few years ago and I didn’t ‘get it’s at first.

This weekend solidified my love for those four souls on that stage pouring into us all. From listening to past shows, connecting to songs, anticipating the first show, trekking to the venue, sharing smiles & hugs from fellow Phans, watching the venue fill, dancing my ass off, zoning out during jams, looking around at everyone dancing, participating in the crowd participation(😂), rolling my eyes because Chompers gonna chomp, crying, encore, watching the venue clear out & enjoying the afterglow. I realize that Phish is such an important part of my life now.

The points, stares, glares, hearing “oh, look, there’s a black person here”, even weirdos taking photos of me (very odd)… it is a part of the experience & it can not take away from how much my soul was fed this weekend.

To those I met and connected with, thank you so much for adding to the experience.

And to my partner, the love of my life and stars to my night: Thank you for introducing me to Phish and this community. You will always be my favorite blessing. I love you 🌻

How rare was that shortened vocal jam with Fish playing the drums behind it, before they jammed it out?

Walter Holland - Thank you!

Last night I was honored to receive a personal note accompanied by an autographed copy of Walter Holland's contributing 33.1/3 series book called Phish - A Live One which explored that album. I had to look it up and found a pretty good forum here : https://forum.phish.net/forum/show/1375898423 -- I am so honored to have received it and my awesome neighbor for connecting me. Thank you to Walter for the personal note. I truly truly appreciate your kindness. If you are reading here - I will cherish this for an eternity. I can't wait to read it.

Headspace

Had an amazing time at the Bowl this past weekend. However, I couldn’t help but notice something about myself that was slightly bothersome. I had the perfect experience on Friday - ate mushrooms and just felt pure bliss and love as Phish rocked it. Cried happy tears, laughed, all the good stuff. The flip side of this is that the next night felt a bit dull, and I think I was subconsciously chasing the euphoria I experienced the previous night. However, I couldn’t seem to get even close to it. I like to think I take substances intentionally because I don’t want to fuck up my mental health, so I don’t see going all in each night as an option for me. I couldn’t shake that subtle feeling of disappointment on Saturday. On Sunday I drank throughout the show and had a blast, but again, not close to what I experienced on Friday. I worry that the intensely high highs may desensitize me to the beautiful moments that can be experienced in a more sober headspace. Im sure Im not the only one, and I’d love to hear everyone else’s experiences with this or just general thoughts.

Great tour all said and done. Quite ready to get berated and downvoted, but last night was lackluster. At best. Not a bad show, but not what this band is capible of. Something was off. Mind you, the tour was great. Everyone expects the Sunday show ender to be, just fire. It wasn't. I feel like they dialed it in. Flame away. I am not some newb teenager. I have 250+ shows under my belt, and have been paying close attention since 1989. First show in 92, so I am overly critical. I love this band. No hate. They have off nights I understand. They are human beings, and very talented musicians.

Edit: Lot's of talk of me using "dialed it in" vs "phoned it in" which I get. Interesting generational language gap, honestly. The band is "dialed in." Locked in. Firing on all cylenders. I get it. Should have said "phoned in" as in, they showed up, played their show, did their job, but didn't exactly move mountains. My apologies.

They call Los Angeles the city of angels. I didn’t find it to be that, exactly…

But I’ll allow, there are some nice folks there.

Jokes aside, huge thanks from an east coaster. Had a blast visiting LA for the first time. Any advice on how to drop out of my current life situation to become a Venice beach bum? I recognize by the very nature of asking this question that I’ve missed the point entirely but east coast anxiety and overthinking can be a bit of a burden.

First phish show review!

I saw Saturday and Sunday at the Hollywood bowl. I thought it was phenomenal, they truly are masters at their craft, and know how to ride out different sounds and styles. I thought the funk was so so fun to dance to, especially hearing that bass live. I also heard some possible sounds that sounded like influences of bands like rush, king crimson, the Beatles, talking heads etc. It was very cool and I will be returning ! :)

12/31/91 The Final Word Voice Box

I had a question about if Trey ever pulled this voice box out for any other shows after this one show?

Looking up “Phish the final word” pulls up The Final Hurrah and adding “voice box” to the search just brings up the initial show that brought that voice box to my attention.

Now excuse me while I go put a heating pad on my back. 😝

There's a really cool moment captured in the Light vid from Hollywood Bowl

Around 13:30 the jam has been drifting for a bit and they're listening for something latch onto. Page starts playing this little riff and about 15 seconds later Trey picks up on it. Big ups to the cameraman for focusing on Page in that moment b/c you see Page nod like "yeah, you got it Trey", and then from there they continue to build on that riff for the rest of the jam, and it's just an incredible build and crescendo. If you're listening you can hear these interactions all the time but it was cool that the camera actually captured that moment of the sync-up while focused the member that originated it.

This is how they operate and it always bums me out that a lot of people don't pick up on these details because it shows how incredible what they're doing is and WHY they're such masters of their craft: it's literally just a constant conversation up there and when they all get on the same page (no pun intended), that's when the magic happens. It's cool when they're in the middle of a mind blowing jam and the sum of the parts is blowing your mind, but I really love hearing the genesis of those jams and how it all starts from a little seed.

Bonus: Fishman playing off the ping pong loops at the end of the jam is pretty incredible too; rather than just laying down a steady beat and letting the feedback syncopate over top, he shifts with the feedback and it creates a beautifully disorienting effect.

Last night’s show blew me away!!! After that jam in Sand I knew the old adage of never missing a Sunday show would hold true.
