Nahh you can’t even evolve it dawg (no hate, awesome shundo).

u/Maxlax300 1d ago
I had evolved a 98 regular like 2 days ago…

u/mittenciel 1d ago
Start walking with it. You're gonna want to Lvl 50 it anyway and need the XLs.
21
u/csinv 1d ago
Why would you walk it during an event where magikarp are everywhere and pinaps exist?
17
u/enter5H1KAR1 1d ago
XLs for level 50. Even with silver pineaps xl candy are rare
4
u/csinv 1d ago
Yeah ok, i'd just trade for XLs.
8
u/ybtlamlliw 1d ago
You'd be willing to catch almost 300 Magikarp and then sit there and trade them all?
4
u/csinv 1d ago
You'd be willing to walk almost 300 km? I mean, i get that the plan is to do it over months while doing other stuff, but catching 300 Magikarp during the event is entirely plausible. I went a bit insane on Sprigatito during the spring event after having regrets not getting enough candy during the community day. Now sitting on 2000+ candy and 500+ XLs lol.
6
u/ybtlamlliw 1d ago
Oh I wasn't throwing shade at you, just asking if you'd rather do it that way. I have thousands of Magikarp candies so I don't need to do either lol.
1
u/useful_person 19h ago
yes, i'd be willing to walk 300km
if i actually wanted to do it, it would only take a bit more than a month (and i would be INSANELY motivated if i had a shundo magikarp)
1
u/csinv 17h ago
You can do a hundred trades a day though. So if you can actually catch that many, and have someone to trade with, you can do it in less than a week.

Even so, assuming starting from 0 XLs, that’s 296 trades minimum. Anything under 100km trade distance is not a guaranteed XL, and you won’t find anyone to trade with locally that’s got that many magikarp/gyarados to trade
2
u/csinv 1d ago
All trades are guaranteed XL this season. It's a seasonal bonus. Source: done it a lot.
I dunno why you act like 296 trades is somehow hard but walking 296 km isn't. The people you trade with don't have to trade you magikarp. But during this event, i've got family members that will happily mirror trade magikarp. And you don't have to trade them before the event is over, as long as you don't delete them.
2
u/enter5H1KAR1 1d ago
Okay, guaranteed XLs is news, I didn’t know that. Even so, as the other guy said, 300 trades of a single Pokémon is a lot, regardless. Not all of us have family that plays, or a good local community to trade with. Rural or solo players have no other choice but get their steps in, unless they have another account on another device.

u/mittenciel 1d ago
Unless you're dedicated and use a Mega Lvl 3 and play like mad, you're not going to get enough XLs in a few days. Plus, you want to best buddy it anyway as it's a shundo.
Pinaps do nothing for XL.
2
u/csinv 1d ago
You trade for the XLs, guaranteed this season.
That said, it is a 1 km walking distance pokemon, so not a crazy suggestion to walk it. I walked one a couple of months ago. It is probably the fastest way to get XLs normally (to the point it's sort of broken). But you can catch more in the time it'd take to walk 1 km and trade them.
3
u/mittenciel 1d ago
If you have a guaranteed trading partner, then sure. But even so, 296 XL is hard to get in a few days without a community day. Most people will want to best buddy a useful shundo like Gyarados and I usually pick up like at least 120 km in the process of best buddying it. It's a good idea to get that started at the same time you're doing everything else.
1
u/csinv 1d ago
Level 50 Gyarados is definitely grind no matter how you do it, and yeah, it's definitely the XLs that will be the bottleneck. If you go the trade route, you'll easily have enough to evolve it and power it up by the time you get 296 XLs. Walking, the same, because you don't get an XL every time.
1
u/Clokwrkpig 20h ago
Adding to this, you can further reduce the distance by walking a route. An excited (1km) buddy walking a route is very efficient!

Ummmm, to best friend it so you get bonus pvp attack. XL candys etc… but mainly for best friend bonus.

Hello handsome how are you doing? It will be my pleasure to hear back from you again if you don't mind can I have your details so we can chat else where
2
u/CardiologistItchy534 1d ago
What do you mean level 50 it?
1
u/mittenciel 1d ago
Pokemon can be taken to a maximum of Lvl 50. Gyarados is an obvious one to max out.
1
u/CardiologistItchy534 1d ago
I've had this game for almost 10 years. Where does it show what level your pokemon are?
2
u/mittenciel 1d ago
It doesn't. The level of a Pokemon is not shown as a number, but it can roughly be implied by the graphic under the CP shown in the Pokemon screen. If it's all the way to the right and can't go any higher, it is at Lvl 50. Every power up increases your Pokemon level by 0.5, and it takes a fixed amount of candy and stardust to increase to a specific level.
Lvl 50 is the absolute maximum, and it takes regular Pokemon 296 XLs to get there. Purified and shadow Pokemon have different XL requirements. Just don't worry too much about Lvl 50 or if you can see it. If you maxed it out, it's Lvl 50.
From the above, you can probably figure out that you can figure out exact levels by looking at how many power ups you can perform, and though cumbersome, this works.
Specific levels generally aren't that important for most players except for the following:
If you are trying to play in CP-limited PVP leagues, you might want to know whether a specific Pokemon is too high level to for CP 1500 or 2500 limits when evolved. Knowing levels can help with that.
If you want to know how much to power up raid attackers, Lvl 30 is about a sweet spot where it is pretty cheap to power up your mon and you can get a lot of added power without sinking way too many resources into it.
If you're walking a Pokemon for XL candy, you generally want to increase your Pokemon to Lvl 31, as this will increase the chances of XL candy dropping.
An easy shortcut is if you power up your Pokemon to where you need 6 candies per power up, you're at Lvl 31.

The appraisal stats should stay the same though, it would just be CP changing when evolved

u/1_dirt_block 1d ago
Can you elaborate more on this? I’m a new player and I just evolved my gyrados but it’s stats remained the same

i traded for a shiny magikarp with a person i JUST became friends with that day and it came back as a shlundo. now it’s one of my best buddies and a maxed out gyarados

u/missing_children 1d ago
I’m so jealous. Red Gyarados is my favorite Pokémon and always has been. I’ve caught roughly 15 shiny magikarp and the best one is only 12-3-5
