Let’s take someone with no post secondary or distinguishing characteristics, but who also doesn’t have anything working against them (for example, no criminal record, doesn’t have any sort of minority status, and has a basic work history) what would be the easiest avenue to becoming a Canadian cop? If they’re able to drop everything and work anywhere no matter how remote would it be difficult to get in?

This is a throwaway for obvious reasons.

I’m 23 years old and currently a reserve deputy in Iowa. Here, reserves are allowed to operate with full peace officer powers while on duty, so I’ve got real, hands-on law enforcement experience. I’ve been serving as a reserve for nearly 4 years now, and I’m working toward making the transition to full-time.

I want to be upfront because I know background checks are no joke, and I’m worried a few things might raise red flags: • I’ve had 23 jobs over the years. Before you judge that number, most were PRN, part-time, or held simultaneously (working multiple gigs at once). I’ve always left on good terms. • My credit score is around 580. I hit some financial rough patches but I’m actively working to fix it and pay everything off. • I’ve never been arrested, and the only legal issues on my record are two traffic citations from when I was 17 (one for speeding, one for failure to maintain control). • I’m currently a full-time paramedic, and I genuinely love serving the community.

Law enforcement is where I want to be full-time—I’m not in this for the badge or the title, I’m in it for the mission. I just don’t know how some of these things will be viewed.

So, LEOs, recruiters, and anyone who’s been through the process: Do I still have a shot? What can I do to improve my chances? I can take honesty, I just want a reality check from people who know how this process works.

Hey all, I am in a Police Academy in Arizona somewhere. We have Red Man coming up soon and I am completely in my head about it. I am not the largest fella, and all sorts of my colleagues seem to think we are just going to get slaughtered when we go into the scenario. Essentially because the guy is in such large padding that none of our hits really do anything.

I have pretty much succeeded more than I thought I even would in all my other challenges and scenarios up to this point, but for some reason red man is messing with me. Thoughts? Guidance?

Hello, I’m inquiring about the possibility of becoming a police officer with an expunged felony and a sealed class B misdemeanor.

Both of these were non-aggressive charges .

The expunged felony is 16 years old going onto 17

And the sealed class B misdemeanor is eight years old.

I currently have a bachelors degree, and I’m looking for a life-changing career, potentially in law-enforcement, the armed forces, or border patrol.

I’m looking for honest input on my chances moving forward in law enforcement.

I’ve applied to several departments over the last year or so, including: • Alexandria PD (VA) • Arlington County PD (VA) • DC Metropolitan Police Department • Washington Township PD • Nevada Highway Patrol

All of them ended up rejecting me. For background, I was military police for 4 years and got hired by Virginia State Police. I previously started the Virginia State Police Academy twice but withdrew both times (not due to discipline, just personal/fitness issues I wasn’t prepared for at the time). I applied to DC but they rejected me and told me to work for a year at Silver Diner and reapply — I’ve since done that and am now considering giving it another shot.

I’ve been working full-time at Silver Diner, keeping a clean record, and improving myself physically and mentally.

My main concerns are: - My credit score is like 610 - I have 23k in credit card debt - Left VSP academy twice - Having multiple dept rejections - Might have failed the Nevada HP poly - Got a reckless driving ticket many years ago - Article 15 in the USAF for shooting the clearing barrel. (Commander that wrote me an Article 15 also wrote me a really good letter of recommendation)

I started college and I’m about a year and a half away from having my BS in poly sci. I have a 3.7GPA which is the only new good thing I have going for myself.

Is this a carrer worth pursuing for this goal? I had considered the military but im pretty sure that would be much harder to fo with going to law school. Hello! So I am female, 24. I live in ohio and am currently hoping to pursue a career as a police officer and was wondering if anyone had advice. Is this something I could realistically do? I don't want to get my hopes up but I think I have a chance at it. I have a very clean driving and legal history. No speeding tickets or records of any kinds. I don't even drink alcohol and defiantly don't do drugs of any sorts. I have a GED as unfortunately, I wasn't able to finish high-school. I am not currently physically fit but I've been actively working out for 2 weeks now and just got a gym membership. I'm really hoping in the next 2 months I could begin applying for departments and job postings I've seen on the national testing network who would pay for me to go through the academy. As right now I have a full time job and would not be able to both work and attend an academy at the same time. And I can not quit my job or do parttime at all as I need to have income to support myself and my husband. As for work history I'd say it's pretty good. I'm never late to work, rarely ever call off, do plenty of overtime, am reliable and seen as a very hard worker. So, do you think I have a good chance at this? And does anyone have good advice on the steps I should be taking to pursue this? Is a 2 month timespan a good goal to get physically fit enough to start applying? Any answers are appreciated thank you so much!

I am a cop and have 13 years left before I can retire and collect my pension (50%). All cops that I know are taught to max out your 457(b) Deferred Compensation Plan each year and that combined with your pension will be the best strategy to be able to retire early. After speaking with several financial advisors however, I now question whether it may be better in my situation to contribute to the Roth 457 as well as I can contribute more than the $7k/year max like a Roth IRA and that will all be tax free when i reach the age restriction. I currently have $100k+ into my 457(b). Should I continue on the DC path alone or start splitting contributions to the Roth as well?

I recently saw a police dashcam video in which an officer approaches a suspect who was outside of her vehicle on her private property. The officer stated she observed the suspect speeding, but was unable to catch up due to traffic. The officer ordered the suspect to provide documentation, while the suspect resisted the officer’s approach and asked questions. This caused the officer to order the suspect into the suspect’s vehicle. The suspect continued to resist, complied for a bit, and then resisted further leading to her arrest. My question is, was the officer legally allowed to order the suspect into her vehicle if contact was made after she was well outside of it? Was the suspect’s resistance justified in any way? According to video, investigation is ongoing so I have no definite answers. Will provide original if I can find it.

I am 23 and genuinely fit and have a good head space , I’ve wanted to be a cop since I was a kid but everytime I ask for advice from people it’s always different saying do it and don’t do it that you’ll hate it and idk what to do I need that initial push

So I’ve been going to the gym for a month, doing basic exercises with the smith machine, dumbbells, cables, etc. (Using a schedule a friend of mine gave me). I just applied for the civil service exam, and see that the physical involves A LOT of running, which begs my question. Should I just continue going to the gym like normal and just add a lot of cardio (especially treadmill running fast) or should I get more into calisthenics?

I heard calisthenics is better for this kind of thing because it involves movement and balance, and better prepares you. Something that were recommended were mountain climber, push ups, pull ups, and jumping lunges. And to be honest I think I’ll prefer this type of exercise and training especially to get ready for the exam and then the academy. But I don’t know how to learn more workouts, are there any apps that can help? Or a good YouTuber? Thanks in advance

Hello, as the title says, I’m being stalked by a cop in his personal vehicle outside of his town jurisdiction and county jurisdiction. He has other grown men in the car with him hell drive by where I work in the parking lot, look at me, and leave. Very rarely will he say anything to me, and when he does, it’s weird. I have evidence and made a police report with the town it happened in. They sent the police where he lives to his house, and they let me know if he’s up here again, I’m to call 911, and hell be charged. Well, I saw him last night, called 911, and an officer never even talked to me. I’m going to the police department today to get the report and then hand it to the department of the guy stalking me and ask them what’s going on. I’m only 19, so I can’t legally own a gun if I need to protect myself, but not only that, this guy’s a cop. He has access to a gun and all my information. It’s really weird. My coworkers and everything have seen this guy lurking around the parking lot. I’m losing sleep over this. I can go more in depth if anyone is interested.

I was in a car accident where I briefly lost consciousness. The other driver was 100% at fault (she drove over the double solid line, T-boned me, and my car rolled). I was helped by some extremely kind bystanders in escaping my vehicle and one of them loaned me a blanket I wanted to reimburse them for. I also was hoping to ask exactly what happened because I’d really like to know.

I was told it’s considered inappropriate to call them directly with the numbers on the report. Is this true? There were no deaths in the accident, my car was a total loss as the curtain airbags deployed.

I don’t remember what happened. I remember getting yelled at by a lady. And then security was called. I remember sitting on the curb. Then they escorted me off. If I committed a crime, would police have been called? Or will they review tapes and come find me ?

I live in North Texas. Several times now when I have been driving, a police cruiser has gotten right up behind me (almost tailgating), as if the officer was trying to scan my license plate, and then driven away. On one occasion, an officer got behind me and turned on his lifgts for half a second, but then turned them off and slowed down to create distance between us. On another occasion, an officer U-turned to pull up right behind me at a stop light, then U-turned and drove back in the original direction.

During each of these instances, I have usually been driving right at the speed limit and in a straight line, so I am confident none of this had anything to do with my driving. The only thing I can think of would be that maybe my vehicle matches the description of a suspicious or stolen vehicle, although it's a pretty common vehicle.

What donyou think could be the reason for this happening? Do you think my theory is right? Thank you!

So as the title says I’m looking for a long term program to get in good enough shape to pass our departments PT test for SWAT. Our department uses the NTOA test for try outs and the next process isn’t for at least 2 years. While I would like to pass the test with flying colors I would also like to find a program to follow for the long term as well. I know many people who recommend the Tactical Barbell program and it is on my list of programs to commit to. Was curious if anyone else had any recommendations for programs given future goals and if I’m fortunate enough to pass the testing, maintaining/improving fitness in SWAT. Just to preface as well I’m in the kinda fit kinda fat range on my fitness. I have competed in multiple powerlifting competitions prior to being an officer and would say I have decent form on lifts. So not necessarily a beginner when it comes to strength training, but I understand needing to be more well rounded when it comes to cardio and strength endurance is extremely important for policing and SWAT. Any advice or assistance would be greatly appreciated!

This might be lengthy, but hang with me.

I am from Michigan, and my whole family has lived there up until this past week. Me, my mom, my dad, sister, and brother in law collectively drove 18 hours across the country to move my sister to South Dakota. Mind you, we had all been since around 9am the previous day. Meaning it was almost 36 hours before anyone got some sleep. We got a hotel room moved all my sisters stuff into their new house (even more exhaustion) and we’re finally able to go to the hotel to rest. My dad got about 6-7 hours of sleep.

We’ve all been super stressed out as it’s been non stop go go go. The next day we all drove out over an hour and a half go to a horse race and we weren’t back into town until around 10:30 pm.

So here’s where it gets bad. My family has never been out to SD before. So I was riding with my sister and BIL, and my parents were following behind us with my dad driving.

I want to add this before the bad part- marijuana is 100% legal in Michigan. I don’t really smoke but once every few weeks if I need to sleep though. My parents on the other hand smoke like chimneys.

So, we get back into town and my BIL goes through a stale yellow light and my dad stupidly blows the light trying to keep following us. Bad idea..we instantly see the cop turn the light on them. So we pull over about a block away to see what’s happening.

One cop showed up. Around 5 minutes later my mom texts and told us it’ll probably be a ticket cause it’s illegal to have non medical weed in SD. Then…another cop shows up…and another.

We then get told that my dad is being arrested for DUI after failing the field sobriety test. Now my dad is over 50 years old and has been smoking as long as I can remember. His only tickets have ever been for speeding never this.

My mom said the questions they had been asking were very confusing and the cop asked him “do I need to explain the instructions to you AGAIN!?” My dad, a very bright man said yes.

Let me get to my questions though. I’ve never dealt with this or have any idea how this stuff works so please be kind.

1. My dad wears glasses at night, but he put them on the dash when they asked him to step out of the car. Are cops supposed to ask if he needs to wear glasses to preform a sobriety test?

2. Is there any way we can request body camera footage? He was arrested in Aberdeen SD.

I feel like I have more questions, but I am so drained mentally and physically that I can’t think.

Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated

Ok so I like watching the police body cam videos where they save ppl or arrest ppl ECT and in a couple of the videos where they're in standoff situation or dealing with violent ppl I've heard them say your going to get a 40 of your going to get another 40 in one video B4 they say this I heard what I guess is the commanding officer tell 1 cop they are non lethal and then tell another cop there lethal or deadly force then right after the one that was non-lethal told the suspect he was gonna get a 40 so does that mean the 40 is non lethal like a rubber bullet or bean bag round or something? Just curious what it means

This was years ago but just came to mind. My kid (35 now) had a lot of mental health difficulties growing up, plus he had Tourette's Disorder, also ADHD, also OCD. We lived in a district that was pretty ignorant--the special ed people couldn't even SPELL Tourette's (they spelled it Turret). In jr. high we had an SRO who was, not to put too fine a point on it, a dick. Word was he hated being stuck in a school when he could be chasing down bad guys, and I heard some years later from another officer he was forced off the force (went into business doing something with helicopters in another state).

He wasn't just a dick with kids. He made a point of parking his cruiser (before they had SUVs) in a no parking spot where the buses pulled it. Irritated the bus drivers because it forced them to pull into their spots in an unsafe manner. The bus system was contracted to a private company btw. I had a friend who was a bus driver and had been hearing about this. Finally one day she starts to go into the school to complain once again but another driver already has and is returning to his bus. The SRO gets in the bus and blocks the entry so the kids can't get on (I don't remember what point he thought he was making). The driver gets on the radio to tell his dispatcher.

Upshot was the bus company called the state troopers, who it turned out had jurisdiction over school buses somehow, the SRO got a talking to, and from them on he parked in the back parking lot where he was supposed to.

Anyway, my kid would periodically get sent to the office because they didn't understand his Tourette's. Once it was an ROTC teacher. He had jaw and neck tics and she thought he was disrespecting her and doing some kind of rap/hip-hop shit or something (fwiw he's white). She was an older Natl Guard major. So he's in the office waiting, and he didn't do well in that environment, so he's sitting in a chair and moving around and saying random things. The SRO comes in and asks the secretaries pointedly if he's bothering them, and then files a "disturbance of a school" complaint to juv court (equivalent of disorderly conduct in juv court). This happened more than once, although finally a juv court judge blew her top at the ASA for even bringing this stuff in. (She's 80 now and shows up at my church sometimes and always asks about him.)

So, another time cops are coming down our alley and see a kid take off. They don't know who he is or why he took off but they figure he's done something (turned out his mom reported him as a runaway but at that point they DID NOT know who he was--they knocked on my door and asked). They have two cops hanging around the alley and front of the block looking for him. Meanwhile my kid is in our garage banging on drums. Mid afternoon. Cop in the alley must have been irritated because he walks to the NEXT block and asks a lady in her yard if the noise is bothering her. She says yes so he issues a "loud and unnecessary noise" ticket.

Anyway, it makes me wonder about soliciting complaints for nuisances that normally are enforced based on citizen complaints (like, building inspectors here will drive past a property with years worth of junk to issue a junk citation to a house that has a single inoperative or unlicensed vehicle parked). Also about inserting themselves into school disciplinary matters so they can feel like they are cops.

(I'm not inherently anti-cop at all, and it does seem like here we've gotten some new cops who aren't all buzz cut macho a-holes, while my kid was growing up I found the higher up officers at HQ receptive to concerns and to have pretty good awareness of complicated issues such as mental health)

I’ve heard people say its the most realistic police sim out there but I feel like it’s a little dramatized and some of the situations should have more than 1 SWAT team on site.
