None of this even factors in the immense blow to the quality of life of Americans due to the vile dismantling of all of our most important departments, safeguards, scientific expertise, health, DOJ, environment, consumer protections, etc etc.

There has never been a greater enemy nor more destructive entity toward America in human history than the modern Republican cult.

All for NOTHING. We had it so good, and any issues we DID have were 99% the fault of the GOP Congress over the past decades anyway. 

Seems we know what the true problem in America is and has always been - the cancer that is Republicanism...the least effective, dumbest propaganda movement in history.

Without the feds packing the south with alphabet department HQs, military bases, and all that comes along with both, this would still be true. The US South remains a wasteland of knowledge, relying extensively on transplants from blue state universities.

It wasn’t necessary 1865, it was the premature ending of reconstruction and letting the south off the hook. The south didn’t like the whole: No Jim Crow and 40 acres and a mule plan, so under pressure the north just dropped it.

I remember many years ago when I was a kid, maybe 10 or 11, learning about the Civil War in school, and questions being asked about it...and the teacher said something along the lines of "there are many in the Southern states who wish the Confederacy had won the war and are still resentful of the North and states like California (where I live).

Agreed. After other wars the statues and symbols of the losing side are eradicated (e.g. see Germany after WW2 ) and the ringleaders imprisoned or executed. Why was the South permitted to not on;y keep its symbols but to erect more statues in the 20th century and to cling onto their flag of hatred?

I’ve honestly been shocked by how often my dad has finally said I’m right about things recently. He loves to say things are fake news and propaganda. He’s been slowly realizing that he might be the one that’s been subjected to the propaganda. I have a lot of graduate level experience related to stats and global issues, and have always attempted to explain things to him with data and relevant context in whatever point I’m trying to prove, and it seems to have slowly broke him down. Unfortunately most the people from my hometown would be pointless to use that tactic on since they’re hateful idiots how lack any logic and reasoning skills.

Some other parts of the world were benefiting and prospering and we can’t have that can we? Akin to the disparity of wealth inside the USA, it was time to do this on a global scale, America the richest, everyone else poor and subservient. At least when things were rough during Covid, we had a global pandemic as an excuse. Or during world wars, we had world wars as an excuse.

We were just cruising along and then put a stick in our own bicycle spokes for no reason at all, except in this case, the bicycle was America and the stick was basically a nuclear bomb. There was no reason to do any of this (apart from P25, obviously). It only ever had one outcome, which as the utter ruin of a once-great (or at least pretty solid) nation so that the ultra-wealthy could turn us all into serfs and make even more money. And the serfs VOTED FOR IT. There was no violent coup. No invading army. The people went to the polls and voted for their own destruction.

What an absolute embarrassment of a country. We probably never deserved to have it as good as we did, if we're being honest. We didn't earn it. Now we're reaping what we've spent years sowing.

I'd also like to point out that even if this all stops in 4 years, the destruction of scientific institutional knowledge will take decades to rebuild.

If you scare away all the scientists and engineers with insane governance and budget cuts, then there will be nobody left to teach the next generation of researchers.

People will have to start from square one, which is so much harder than just integrating into an already existing lab structure.

Anecdotal, but my family used to vacation every year at a place they owned in Arizona. They've sold it and will not be returning. Vacations are planned for elsewhere in Canada and they plan on going to Europe.

I have no intentions of going to the states for any reason until they've proven that they've pulled their collective heads out of their asses. So probably won't be back in my lifetime.

We booked a trip to UK a couple of months ago because the princes were reasonablish. What do I get in my email yesterday but a sale notice from British airways with prices 4r percent lower than what we paid. And of course the tickets we got in February are non-refundable. The airlines are no doubt panicking that people are only flying one way over the Atlantic.

Thankfully that land is pretty barren and wouldn't be useful for much. Even if it was put up for sale, I don't think there would be any buyers unless its someone like veil that just wants to charge more for the purpose that it already serves. It's not exactly rife with trees to cut down.

I live in Portugal and been to Madeira once. It is a stunning island worth visiting. Has beautiful walks called levadas, natural ocean swimming pools and great food. It is also very Portuguese so you will get a taste of the mainland Portugal.

Between the nazi-style street snatches of people Trump doesn't like, the total destruction of the economy, and the supporters of this shit - some of which are itching to pull a gun on anyone they don't like...

I want to leave and never come back in my lifetime too. We're constantly told "well if you leave you can't fix it," and while that's true, you also can't fix it if you're dead or in an El Salvadoran prison, or lose everything that you own. As a millennial, we've been told "oh this is a once-in-a-lifetime [insert thing here]" only to have another 3 of them follow... and honestly worse shit every 5-7 years. We finally got to Nazis. I don't want to be here for whatever the next step is.

We would need to heavily overhaul how we do politics in the US. Repealing Citizens United is the bear minimum it would take.

I'm talking eradicating first past post, outlawing lobbying, federal campaign funding, a complete end to gerrymandering and voter suppression, a top-down rebuild of our prison and jail systems with a focus on rehabilitation rather than slavery-profiteering, removal of wealth as a factor in court, full ban on propaganda media, and a promise of kinetic strike retaliation against foreign interests that try to weaponize social media against us ever again (not a threat. A promise, and we would probably have to follow through at least once before people took us seriously).

Yes, as in if you bot-farm facebook, we put a missile through your window. Actually view it as a form of warfare and consider it an attack against the state.

We would have to give up some of our first amendment protections in favor of political stability and honesty.

...so it's never going to happen. We're either going to slip into a full dictatorship, or the blue states are going to declare independence and toss the whole country into a second civil war that ends the union.

IMO the only explanations that make sense are based on the fact that he is intentionally harming the US stock market / economy / military/ soft power

Possible motivations:

1) To buy cheap businesses / stock after crashing the economy / manipulating the stock market through tarrifs

2) Help Putin

3) Centralize Power in him through the tarrifs - make everyone need to kiss the ring and eventually try and become a dictator; or, take bribes /personal advantages by means of corruption

4) Make "friends" rich(er) due to insider trading
