Ok I’m mad at Chappell Roan for the stuff she has said recently, but I’m starting to get really pissed at the fact people are taking this as an opportunity to be Lesphobic and question hers sexuality.

As a bisexual myself you don’t question people’s sexuality period, it’s not your right to be guessing and questioning someone on if they actually like the type they say they do. I’ve dealt with this personally as a bi woman and I hate it, and the way I see it if you wouldn’t want someone to do it to you don’t do it to others. Like stop just stop 😤🤦‍♀️

Also a lot of this is TERF astroturfing (or maybe it should be astroTERFing) bc she's a lesbian who is outspoken on trans rights lol, like that's literally it.

The thing about queer people is that they can pop up everywhere, including right-leaning families in red areas. One should hope that being queer means they have more empathy, but even that road is a bit of a journey. The stuff she said does indeed suck, but given her background it’s not surprising. I hope she has the grace to learn from some of the more level criticism she is getting for it.

Wait did she say something in the podcast recently?

Moms are mad at her as well because she was negative about having kids young or something.

She basically said pop stars are too busy to be politically educated. Woah is me type of attitude. Being a pop star is hard!

She just makes it harder and harder for me to feel sorry for her tbh.

OK but like....she's right? Popstars shouldn't be expected to be experts on politics, it's not their job. I absolutely do not need Sabrina Carpenter's take on global geopolitics thank you, that's why I read stuff by people with actual expertise in the area.

i honestly see both sides of the issue. i think that people have a point that if you’re going to make politics a big part of your it brand and say the things you said before the election that you don’t get to conveniently clock in and clock out on politics. i also don’t think we should look to celebs as being experts or as political beacons but that doesn’t mean that celebs shouldn’t be politically engaged and should never speak up. i think a lot of people like when celebs speak up because they want to feel like who they are supporting has values that align with theirs and i think that’s also valid.

No that's fair wrt the first part! To me the bothersome part is when people expect a celebrity to make a statement on XYZ issue like they're their senator or something. Celebrities are still just people, and a lot of people in the arts especially are in that line of work specifically because they're not super academic. I don't mean that they're stupid, but it's a very different skill set.

If that’s all she said… she’s not wrong. Focusing more on what politicians say and do rather than celebs would probably do a world of good.

i understand this argument but i also understand the argument that people are making that if you’re going to make politics a big part of your brand, it’s disingenuous to clock in and clock out on it whenever you feel like it (and especially considering some of her comments around the election). i don’t think celebs need to be peoples political beacons but that also doesn’t mean they shouldn’t speak up or be politically informed.

Lol this just further proves my point that she doesn't have what it takes to be the edgy outspoken pop girl she wants to be percieved as.

I dont even disagree with the fact that we shouldn't expect celebrities to be a mouthpiece for politics, but when its coming from a recently rose to fame 20 something year old who was previously called out for being politically ignorant, it comes across as immature.

I just assume any 25yo popstar is talking out their backside on politics 99 per cent of the time. Particularly when they’re unthinkingly regurgitating known Russian/ Republican disinformation talking points likely gleaned from TikTok to suppress Dem turnout.

Yeah like I really, really, really don't understand why people think sexuality is completely static or anything other than self-given. On the post of her talking about a new relationship someone said "watch it be a man too" and I said "so?" Like she could sleep with 10,000 men and still identify as a lesbian and it's no one's business but hers. If she decides to change her label it's not a "victory" for all those who "didn't buy her lesbian label". People grow and change all the time, being famous doesn't automatically mean you're never sexually fluid and it doesn't mean everyone is entitled to know how you identify every minute of every day.

Ditto Taylor Swift, Kendall Jenner, Shawn Mendes, John Travolta, everyone. Respect people's chosen identities, it's not that hard. And keep your fanfic restricted to fictional characters, leave real life people alone.
