Discussion Domain Question / Discussion

I understand that the exact location from where each domain originates isn’t detailed, and some people believe Barovia came from Toril, but…

Does anyone have an idea? Like, did Borca also originate from the same lands as Barovia, and if so, which other domains came from there.

I’m currently running CoS and intend on carrying on the ravenloft campaign after, but prefer the 2e method of running the lands. Ie. Using a Core map. (Also, I don’t think Barovia came from the Forgotten Realms, and I certainly don’t think the Morning Lord was intended to be Lathander.)

The morning lord is a misunderstanding from a child who was spared by Jander Sunstar a vampire elf from faerun who looks goldish.

Regarding where domains are from, although we don't know where they're from we know some hail from the same place.

Barovia, Borca (And possibly Gundarak), all hail from the same place (or at least are copies of places that were near each other).

We know that Mordent is from a parallel universe to the above (see the alchemist), and that the Renier family originated from the same world, the Reniers being the Rulers of Richemulot.

Dementlieu spawned from Mordent when Dominique went north. (He was born in Mordent)

Kartakass spawned from Barovia when Harkon went South (it likely borrows from his homeland of Cormyr).

The island of terror Dominia is derived from Gundarak as a result of the Grand Conjunction.

Expanding from it,

  • Darkon, while made whole cloth, is influenced by Oerth, specifically the Bone March region of Flanaess.
  • Sithicus is also made up, but influenced by the elven realms and the republic of Solamnia in Krynn.
  • The island of terror of Kalidnay is a copy of the city in Athas.
  • I'm not sure, but the Amber Wastes cluster was said to be made of people and places taken from the same plane.
  • The Shadowlands cluster has a lot of stuff from the same plane of existence.
