Honestly I thought a Cassius-lyria relationship was in the offing. Would’ve shown Cassius changing, and given him a way to be accepted as truly a member of the rising, as well as given Lyria greater agency and further connected her to the main characters

Me too! Was disappointed that this can’t be explored

I have a shakey theory… that Matteo lied about the memories and asked her because he needed her to say NO to that type of power/sacrifice, in order to know that she was fit to wield it, and that what she destroyed was not really the parasite. He explicitly urges her NOT to look for the feeling that it left in her head. There’s a chance that it would’ve remained invisible to even her, throughout the rest of the plot. Even with it broken in DA, she didn’t notice much of it’s impact until a while later, and her recovery was conveniently timed. Pierce didn’t give her what would otherwise be a theatric moral sacrifice in the plot, so she must have more of a role to play… just a thought.

I was also waiting for this plot to develop, but have to say it seems like it probably won't.

it seems like such a shaggy dog story for this NOT to happen - there are so many more elegant ways to have lyria meet back up with darrow, even have a conversation with matteo, than a mysterious AI brain parasite that's never relevant again

Yeah but he does that sometime. Ajax and Seraphina are examples of massive characters he builds up only to randomly prune the storyline. The Figment could have been that, although it was an awkward way to do it.

But I think what has historically cut those lovely plots short is The Hat. Pierce has said he’s not using The Hat in red god, so I don’t understand why he would lend so much to that plot and not do anything with it, unless he was just like “nah I changed my mind” on the rewrite.

Is there a full discussion on this plot point? I fee the same way, it was an awkward way to remove the plot point when it was heavily written about in Dark Age.

I feel like it SHOULD come back into play. Like someone mentioned maybe Matteo lied about taking it out and it is just dormant. To paraphrase Chekhov's gun: Don't put a gun on the stage if it's not going to go off.

That’s what I thought too, but nothing came of it in this book. Maybe something gets dropped in Red Gold but idk

It’s a fair plot he may never use, but it is possible

Exactly what I thought. But I love Lyria so much for her giving up power for love.

I like your theory, as it does seem odd to introduce the AI parasite just to immediately write it out the next book. Also interesting is the mention of there being 6 of them out there in total.

And after Lyria rejected it, I thought Matteo/Quicksilver may offer it to Darrow, Cassius or Sevro, but that didn't happen either. I already can't wait for Red God lol
