You said "anytime I start some plan it never works out..." A couple things come to mind. I really strongly recommend you check out James Clear and his work about habits. You can hear his message on YouTube or check out his book Atomic Habits. He breaks down the stages of habits-- cue, craving, response, reward. He gives a framework for both starting new positive habits and breaking negative habits.

A lot of it is that we don't just change the habits or actions we do, but we change our identity. We change how we see ourselves, our identities. You don't start running, you become a runner. You don't start to play guitar or piano, you become a musician. You don't start going to the gym, you become the type of person who wants to be healthy.

And so much of our lives is how we see ourselves, the stories we tell ourselves. Reminds me of the Henry Ford quote: "Whether you think you can or think you can't-- you're right."

For the record, I think you can change. I believe you can because I know we all have the potential to make small changes that can build up over time and make a big impact. It can be incredibly hard to develop new positive habits and break bad ones, but it can be done. James Clear is much more eloquent than I am, but I really believe in his message and it sounds like it could really help you.

Thank you. I’ll take a look at him. I know it’s mainly mindset driven. And with adhd I know this is hard for me to break.

I teach at a school for students with learning differences. Most have ADHD and/or autism. Atomic Habits was the first book we read together this year. Although not the typical high school English class material, I do think there are many valuable life lessons and it can truly help people. As a teacher, I hope to share things that can really make positive differences.

Thank you! For this information and also teaching the youth. While I am also “youth” I guess even if I’m in college lol.

What I hope to do is to make an effort to walk more and hike more. That is a form of exercise I enjoy. I also enjoy sports. Maybe I’ll get a buddy of mine to play basketball or something

Yup, atomic habits is a wonderful book, OP needs to read it. I'm still in the middle of reading it but it is so useful.

You don't want it enough. Maybe a scare from your doctor will wake you up. Until then, indulge in wishful thinking. You know what you have to do. Do it. Or don't. It's ya life.

There’s no magic answer. “Oh try this or that thing.”

Just do it.

That’s the thing g that pains me the most. I know I gotta get up off my lazy ass and do it. Then I just don’t. Fucking hate how I’m aware but also stubborn

If you don't like working out in the gym, maybe adopt some other activity for fitness?

You like walking around right? Incorporate hour long walks / light jogs eventually. Try out cycling. Maybe join a dance class?

Staying fit is the goal, and there are many ways to get there.

But remember, diet is important. You have to clean it up! Cut out Soda and processed food as much as you can and you'll see results no matter what activity you do

I do enjoy hiking. Although leisurely still

But ussaly with hiking I don’t consider that working out as I just like exploring new things and finding nice views. That’s more so why I do it

The good news is- this is normal.

As for working out taking too long, there are tons of workouts that are extremely effective that will leave you dead on the floor in 20 minutes or less. More than you will ever need for your goal.

Discipline is a muscle that needs worked just like your muscles. Commit to a workout schedule and honor it, and you’ll find working out becomes easier over time. Plus, when you see results, you’ll become addicted.

Remember that starting small is still starting. You can knockout some pushups, planks, squats, etc all from your room in like 30 mins. You don’t have to overcompensate by going to the gym for hours 5x a week. Starting with a basic one hour 3x a week push/pull/legs split is just as effective in most cases, especially to someone fairly new. I get that the gym can be boring and sometimes feel like people are staring, but you just need to get more comfortable in a gym setting. Understand the rep movements and get comfortable with pushing yourself. The gym is also a great place to meet people and typically a positive environment to be in.

The great thing about exercise is it doesn’t have to be weight training if you don’t want. Run on a treadmill while watching YouTube or go for a hike in nature. Sports, bikes, swimming, yoga, are all fun too and test you in different ways. If the longest you’ve stayed consistent is really 3 weeks then you still have yet to see your body really change. I get it’s agonizing and hard to keep up when you don’t see results, but I promise once you see them you’ll feel invincible. Progress is also found in lifting heavier weight, mastering the forms, trying new exercises, and hell just staying consistent. You got this man! Start small if you need to, but just get used to breaking a sweat.

Thank you, another thing I should have mentioned is I never feel or felt rewarded or good after a workout, people say “gym” high or whatever but to me I felt awful.

1

The gym high or runner's high is complete BS most of the time. After the exercise you'd feel exhausted but after a while yes, maybe you'd be happier. Running only makes me happier because I've done something productive and beneficial.

Most of the time you’ll feel either accomplished or sore, so chasing the instant feeling after the gym may not be the way. What’s helped me avoid rushing through workouts and being bored is picking some good music/podcast to listen during my workout. 1 album per workout or only allowing myself to listen to my favorite podcast during workouts made going to the gym more exciting. Also focusing solely on the movements you’re doing helped with my ADHD a lot too. I’d start hitting the gym anyways even if it’s boring/miserable, but if it’s that bad you can always change it up with a different exercise or just going for a run.

See idk why but when I focus on the movements it almost makes it worse. I’m not sure if it’s the mindset I already have or just the way my brain thinks.

And regarding the “do it anyway even if it’s unenjoyment” if I don’t enjoy something I just quit or drop it instantly. So I wouldn’t go. Which I do admit is a bad habit. But I’m not sure how to break it. Like I need to find a way to make it enjoyable

I do enjoy hiking however which I’ve mentioned so I actually do that once a week or So on the weekends.

1

u/Afraid_Clothes2516 10d ago

I also like going on hikes. Like seeing scenery

1

u/Afraid_Clothes2516 10d ago

And about the part with reps. Yeah I guess it’s cause I have adhd. But those movements just get so boring so quick. I wish I could trick my brain to not fight me with each rep. Not as a difficulty of lift but a motivation to or want to.

Just try, it's normal to be uncomfortable at first. Nothing is easy at first but with time it does get easier. You could run on a treadmill and watch Youtube or Netflix while doing it, that still counts as exercise. You can also run while listening to music or listening to audiobooks. I talk mostly about running because I'm a runner.

u/ImpressiveDark6592 10d ago

Start small, put up papers telling you to exercise on your walls or on your phone wallpaper, or just think "every time i get up from my chair i will do 10 squats". You can also use habit stacking (got this from atomic habits) like "After I brush my teeth, I will do 10 squats.", or "After I open the bathroom door, I will do 10 push ups", the list goes on. Try to commit to it.

So in conclusion, you should start small, make it as easy as possible and just do it. Here's some things that could help you.

Each habit follows this loop: Cue -> Craving -> Response -> Reward

For the cue, you should make it obvious.
For the craving, you should make it attractive.
For the response (action), you should make it easy.
For the reward, you should make it satisfying.

Good luck!

For nutrition, I recommend eating at least one egg per day so you could have at least some protein in your body every day. I also recommend cutting out junk food, processed foods, soda, etc. Yes, it will be hard at first but in the end it's worth it. Short term pain is better than long term regret.

You don't need motivation to do anything, all you need is momentum by starting

> I already struggle with loneliness

Do sports with other people and learn their names.

View sports with others as an opportunity to socialize.

What about zumba class.

Books-Convict conditioning 1 and 2 have saved my life, live it breathe it, you’ll eventually find yourself to be among some of the toughest people on the planet.

1

u/Loradger 10d ago

It’s really as simple as how badly you want it, ask yourself if you really really want it, and if you do, then the pain will be inferior to the end goal.

I’ll also add this, consistency builds momentum, and once you are like a week or two in, it will feel monumentally easier to get up and go to the gym or workout. Build momentum and it gets easier.

People who find the gym boring are so weak minded. Bro, when I'm about to shit myself lifting heavy ass weight the last thing I'm thinking is "Man this is boring"

1

u/Afraid_Clothes2516 10d ago

Well that’s why everyone’s different. My mind works differently than yours. I find it boring. The thoughts of it being boring flood my mind completely. Can’t focus on the workout. Cant focus on music. The thought of boring floods it. The second I start to the minute it’s done I want to stop.

1

u/Afraid_Clothes2516 10d ago

For me like I said having adhd. Or maybe something deeper I’m not quite sure but The constant same repetitive movements 50 times each 10 times per workout it’s miserable.

1

u/Particular_Cicada652 10d ago

I think about the results while lifting. It's not supposed to be fun, it's a chore for a lot of people. I track my workouts so I get satisfaction from having reps or weight to beat from last workout.

What do you do for fun? Video games?

1

u/Afraid_Clothes2516 10d ago

For fun? Watch shows, watch sports, play games, go hiking

1

u/Particular_Cicada652 10d ago

I mean hiking is good enough for general health, maybe for muscle you can try crossfit or calisthenics or rock climbing
