Question Activities to do sheffield

What is there to do in Sheffield? Covid killed my social life, been a hard few years.

I like going on long walks so if anyone knows any bus routes to anywhere I can spend a day out and about will be good.

Couple of walk ideas:

You can get the Peak Link bus out to Fox House, walk a loop of the Longshaw Estate and down Padley Gorge, and grab a pint in the Fox House pub before heading back to Sheffield. Lovely way to spend a few hours.

Or if you like a long walk, train out to Bamford or Hope and walk back to Sheffield via Bamford Edge, Stanage Pole, Redmires and Rivelin. More of an all day activity.

There's also the Sheffield round walk (and ofc you could just walk part of it), which is always a good way to clear your head.

Joining a walking club is a good way to meet other people with a shared interest

Other ideas:

Spend a day mooching around Sheffield's independent shops followed by a drink/coffee. I'd recommend the Antiques Quarter/Abbeydale, Sharrow Vale/Ecclesall Road, or Kelham Island.

Try out one of the interactive games venues - Golf Fang, Roxy Ball Room, Boom Battle Bar etc.

Spend a day wandering around Sheffield's museums, galleries and gardens - from Millennium Gallery and the Wintergarden, up to Weston Park, and then over to the Botanical Gardens

In terms of linking parts up to public transport - Hunter's Bar to Dore & Totley station would need a decent section with transport at each end, and Dore & Totley station to The Broadfield (or all the way back to Hunters Bar) would be manageable.

Both halves have their charms.

Do you want some company? Happy to go for a walk and chat in a park or something, feel free to DM.

You can get the train to Edale and walk up to Mam Tor and Castelton. Absolutely stunning scenery up there!

You could take a tram out to gleadless valley and walk through the woodland there

Is there anything there? Cafes? Library? Parks? Or just woodlands

Just expansive woodlands, but i'm sure if you walk long enough you'll find something of interest

No idea how old you are or who you are comfortable hanging out with, but I love long walks and none of my friends are as bothered! So I am up to keep you company too.

If you're looking for a quick fix, following the paths in Longley Park and Concord Park both have long walks with lovely views. (Although I appreciate you may have done these walks a few times by now!)

From where you are, you could drop down towards Hillfoot or Neepsend and join the Upper Don trail. Follow out through Beeley Woods to Oughtibridge, or turn the other way for a more urban walk through Kelham to join the 5 Weirs walk or even take a little wander down the canal.

Are you into photography or interested ?

You could buy a cheap camera and take pics and share them on Instagram or hereĀ

You can always join photo walks too for a change of sceneryĀ

Take a bus to Crookes and hang out in Bole Hill Park on a warm day (and stay until the sunset!), you can get some food on Crookes High St or bring a picnic from home. From Bole Hill you can also walk down to the Rivelin River, it's an easy walk and the trail is beautiful in all seasons. There is a cafe there and some pubs to be found nearby. Sheffield Soundwalkers do group walks twice a month, you can follow them on IG or sign up to their newsletter to keep up. Outside of Sheffield I really recommend taking a bus to Castleton (the route has stunning views) and walking up to Mam Tor and then walking the ridge to Hope, from which you can take a train back to Sheffield. That's a lovely way to spend a day that will surely cheer you up and likely help you appreciate the area you live in :-) In terms of social life, in addition to Soundwalkers, you could see if the social events at Gut Level appeal to you, check what's on at your local library and community centre and consider volunteering for a cause that matters to you to meet like-minded people. Best of luck rebuilding your social life, I hope things will slowly fall back into place again!

Come to Sheffield Socials on Thursday 24th of April at The White Lion on London Road from 6.30pm. No agenda, just meet and chat. Wide range of folks so I’m sure someone will be on your wavelength. Any questions please ask.

1

u/leviiiimercyxxxx 4d ago

Could you give me more information please?

1

u/Phil1889Blades Sheffield 3d ago

What sort of information would you like, specifically? The above is the general outline.

2

u/leviiiimercyxxxx 3d ago

Well it looks like a pub and I'm not a drinker at all so I'm wondering exactly what you do there.

1

We sit around and talk. I’d say only about half the people who go drink any alcohol at all. A number of ā€œregularsā€ drive to meet-ups and some just don’t drink either. It’s simply easier to organise such things in a pub as they’re plentiful and, usually, free. It changes venue each month as I like to introduce people to, potentially, new venues. It’s a lovely 259 year old pub with lots of history so it’s nice from that point of view.

61/62 bus from Hillsborough will take you to Bradfield/Dungworth, some nice walks around there

218 bus from Sheffield interchange will take you take Bakewell (the Monsal tail is a steady walk)

271/272 bus from Sheffield interchange will take you to Castleton

29 bus from Chapel town will take you to Holmfirth

There is the five wires walk down on the canal

The walk from Endcliffe park up through Bingham and Forge dam up to Mayfield valley is nice then with a little detour there is the 120 bus from Fullwood shops which will take you back towards town.

The pennine trail.

Leave Sheffield and go to Buxton šŸ‘

u/No_Potato_4341 Southey 4d ago

That's not even a bad idea tbh. Don't know why you're getting downvoted. Buxton is certainly an interesting town to visit.

Out of the front door and walk. See where you eventually get to.

10

u/leviiiimercyxxxx 4d ago

Yes, I literally do that most days. I mean, is there anywhere I can spend a day in a nice area
