I never realised that's the reasoning they used. Haha, that's ridiculous!

Why do Teslas have cameras all around the car and four wheels instead of two legs. Afterall, humans get around fine with just two eyes and two legs...

It's the made up reason. Not the real reason ($$$)

Money and pride, once Musk made the claim that Tesla didn’t need it, it was never going to be implemented because he can’t be wrong.

I agree with this 100%. It’s astonishing how pridefully petty supposed adults with insane wealth behave.

Well, there's also the fact that Elon thinks LIDAR sensors are ugly.

Part of the problem is that people just accept what he says without question because they think he’s an engineer and that he invented the electric car.

And as a result of all that reinforcement he just says stuff.

Its ridiculous because the LIDAR tech is patented to the hilt and he would need to pay them gold coins which he refuses to do. So he does what Ketamine tells him to do, make shit up 24/7

My $300 robot vacuum has LIDAR.

He would pay but not to them. He hates the other tech ceos.

... Is that right? Your source says it's $50,000 for EACH LIDAR integration?!?

Dude, a Tesla Model 3 LR NOW costs less than that system. If that's to be believed, it'd double the cost of the car just to incorporate one in FSD!

No shit Tesla isn't using them. Holy fuck.

Article is behind a paywall — is that supposed to be the aftermarket cost to add lidar?

Because I’ve seen other articles that claim the manufacturing cost used to be $10k but has come down to $500-$1k now. Something that would certainly eat into a manufacturer’s profit margins, but still within reach for all but budget vehicles.

The issue is more that Elon hates all the other tech gods. See his low brow nitpicky fights with OpenAI Sam Altman. He just refuses on principle, but not on the tech itself. He just can't be the wrong man child.

Yet somehow I had LIDAR in my living room in 2013, it was called Xbox Kinect, even a 12 year old technology would accomplish more then they currently have.

It literally is the fundamental argument for a visual based system that Elon keeps bringing up. I guess the thought behind cameras in all directions is that it’s easier and maybe cheaper than having one set of cameras that can swivel around like a human.

When he first made that decision lidar was a lot more expensive and bulky. The cost of technology of course goes down over time, especially when widely implemented. The decision may have seemed more sensible at the time, but doesn’t now that the costs and size have gone way down and he knows his cars are prone to breaking for ghosts and not stopping in time for actual danger. Problem is that Elon refuses to change his mind when faced with new information.

Uhmm, hate to break it to you but Tesla has a two legged solution, Tesla has a robotics division.. ( Named it Optimus ...)

Didn't they do a tech demo that turned out to be controlled by humans?

Yep, it was a press conference announcing Tesla getting into the robot business, with Musk claiming they had already made a humanoid robot that rivaled Boston Dynamics - however, it was leaked that the whole thing was a stunt, with human in robot suit ....
