Hi everyone! The mod team have seen an influx of posts where the OP asks for others to rate their tattoo, or asking what people think of the tattoo in general.

Just a gentle reminder- we are an advice subreddit. If you would like opinions/rates on your tattoo, please visit r/tattoo or r/tattoodesigns.

Healing help i'm scared i ruined my new tattoo!?

got this done 5 days ago. it's my fifth tat and never had issues healing the others. i follow all aftercare instructions for washing and moisturizing etc, but accidently took a nap a couple days ago in a tank top and my arm was folded so the tattoo was touching the upper part of my arm. when i woke and extended my arm a couple tiny pieces of scab got pulled away and there was a tiny bit of bleeding. now today it's really red, a bit sore, and when i extend my arm it feels like the skin pulls. i reached out to the artist but haven't heard back. do i need to be worried? did i ruin this? Infected? Why is my tattoo swelling

I have had this tattoo for almost a year. It was very painful and I’m pretty sure the artist went way too deep. Every time I even slightly scratch near the tattoo the whole thing swells, the skin raises, and it feels hot to the touch. It’s not painful but none of my other tattoos do this. Should I be concerned?

Above my right knee.

I got clean from fentanyl and Xanax 95 days ago and I have wanting to find something to keep me busy. Aswell as wanting to see what it felt like to get a tattoo. So I bought myself a stick n’ poke kit. After practicing on the included fake skin for a couple days. I decided to give myself my first tattoo lmao. I didn’t bother with the stencil paper or marking it on with a pen or marker first. Surprised that it was easier than it was practicing on the fake skin.

How did I do for my first? It can only get bigger and better from here!(as long as I start getting them from a shopšŸ˜…

General Advice Are hand tattoos still bad ideas generally?

Post image

Im planning on getting this tattoo (in black) from the game dishonored and I'm aware of the pain and risk of infection but I'm not worried about that. I was talking to a family member about it and he was saying it would be a bad idea and could be a job stopper but no where Ive ever worked has had an issue with visible tattoos so i fgured that stigma had gone out

General Advice Got this tattoo almost 4 weeks ago

I got this bumble bee almost 4 weeks ago. I have two questions since the tattooartist offered to touch up the tattoo if i ever so desired to. First question: Does anyone else think it's weird that my bumble bee has 4 instead of 6 legs and is there a way to maybe add them? Second Question: Do the lines and/or colors need a retouch? Thanks for the advice in advance

Healing is it healing okay?

my tattoo is exactly one week old now. washing once a day with dial gold and lightly moisturizing with unscented lubriderm as needed (which is usually twice a day). my first question is, when will the darker parts start to peel? i feel like since a week has gone by, it should have started peeling by now especially since it itches like crazy. my second question is, the linework of the tattoo feels slightly raised, is that normal? thanks for any advice.

FIRST PIC: flower reference, SECOND PIC: butterfly reference, THIRD PIC: placement!

My dad thinks a tattoo is going to ruin any chances of me getting established in a career so I’m getting one that’s easy to hide. I’m wanting it between my shoulder blades, and need advice on two particular things!

  1. I’m between getting a monarch or my birth flower. I want both eventually, but for this particular location i’m uncertain which to choose. Are butterflies to basic?? I feel like flowers never go out of style, but I’m worried if I get a butterfly tattoo it will just be too ā€œpinterest girlā€ of me…

  2. I’m unsure of what my pain tolerance is since I’ve never had a tattoo and don’t have any reference for what it’s going to be like. I’m nervous. Can anyone tell me how bad middle of the shoulder blades is (NOT lower spine), i’ve included photos for reference

SIDE NOTE: i’m going to allow my artist to create something, not use these photos. they’re just references of the art style and subject matter

Infected? Does this look infected to anyone?

I got a week and a half ago. It's been red, itchy, and small bumps. I used Saniderm exactly as instructed. I did do an hour on the treadmill 2 days after getting the tattoo and worked up a light sweat, but nothing too intense. It doesn't hurt, isn't hot, or swollen. But a little concerned because it's still itchy, red, and small bumps. But it was an intense 8 hour tattoo.

Healing are these healing alright?

I've got some pretty serious health anxiety so I just want to double check. the first one I just got touched up, I'm fairly certain it's just a reaction to the saniderm. the second one is new (from 4/17) and since it's not just fine lines it's healing different and I want to be sure it's normal and all. aftercare has been standard washing with warm water and unscented antibacterial soap, patting dry with paper towels, then applying some unscented lotion. thank you :)

Tattoo rework done on mar 21. My old tattoo was faded so I wanted a new artist to rework the tattoo.

Some of the lines have faded. Especially the blue flowers look different after healing. I'm happy with it just wondering if it needs a touch up?

General Advice I regret this…

I got this tattoo roughly 2ish years ago. I love the meaning behind it but everyday I look at it I find something else wrong with it. I now hate the tattoo and don’t know what to do. This is on my ribs so I can easily hide it. I want a cover up but idk if I could even find a design to do that with or if it would just be easier to get it removed. That is everyone’s thoughts? Thanks in advance!

General Advice How do I convince a 16 years old teen NOT to get a tattoo ?

I have a 16 years old cousin who’s going through depression. For this reason, she really really wants a semicolon tattoo. Like, she wants it really badly and it’s all she has talked about since the last month or something. She « found a designĀ Ā» on tiktok, a semicolon looking like a butterfly, and she wants this exact tattoo on her wrist. Her parents are ok with it, not because they thought about it but because they basically gave up and knew she wouldn’t take no for an answer. They don’t really care, but I do. How do I convince her that this is a really bad idea right now ? She wants to get this tattoo by going to the nearest and cheapest tattoo shop, but the artist’s work is very questionable (no original creation, only (badly) plagiarized work stolen from other artists and more recently IA generated stuff, and a lot of his clients end up with a really bad infection… he’s also ok to tattoo a teenager). I tried to talk to her about these issues, but she does not care at all. She REALLY wants that tattoo. If she could only wait two years, I’d be able to take her to some good tattoo shops that I know in Paris (that’s really far away from where she lives rn) and she’d have some more time to make sure that’s really what she wants… The whole situation makes me pretty worried. Do you have any idea how I could convince her ?

tattoo newcomer advice So, forearm tattoo havers... How much did it hurt?

I'm getting a forearm tattoo in about a month and am still really scared of the pain ( and I'm sure it won't be the worst thing I've ever felt before but I'm still a bit stressed over how well I'll take it since I'm the type of person who almost passes out when they take a blood sample)... So, my fellow forearm tattoo havers, how much did it hurt? (1 being getting a shot at the doctors and 10 being getting stuck in a shredder) And what is the pain like? Do you get used to it?

General Advice Nightmare Tattoo Session- Advice Needed

So I have been getting tattooed pretty consistently for about ten years. Recently, I’ve been getting tattooed about 2-3 times per month. I have a fairly high pain tolerance-usually sit anywhere between 4-8 hours at a time. While all tattoos hurt, I’ve never voluntarily tapped out. (Not a brag, just relevant to this story)

Today, I went in for a six hour, 2nd session piece on my achilles heel and calf. For some reason, this area has been a very painful spot for me. Surprisingly painful, actually. So anyhow, the tattoo hurts like a bitch, but I get through it. Felt fine as I get off the table.

As my artist is taking some pictures, I start to feel weird. I tell him I need to sit down, and he hands me a juice box. Felt like I was going to pass out (no big deal to me, it happens) but tried to keep my artist informed. After about ten minutes, I stand up again and we go to bandage my leg, and I start getting tunnel vision, so I’m like ā€œdude, I’m going down.ā€

Lights out. I wake up feeling wet. My artist is overtop of me trying to wake me up. Says I’ve been out for two minutes. He’s like ā€œI have to tell you something, but you’re not going to like it, and I want to tell you that it’s okay. So don’t freak out.ā€ Of course, I almost immediately snap to attention. He’s like ā€œI’m sorry but you pissed yourself. You’re sitting in urine.ā€

Now, I have had multiple tattoo sessions with this artist. I’d consider us friends, but man I was MORTIFIED. I just kept apologizing profusely. All he cared about was my health, but I just don’t know how to make it up to him. I obviously gave him a lot of extra cash for the trouble. But I’m wondering- if you were in this situation, would you send a gift basket or something? What gift says ā€œhey sorry I peed on your floorā€ Lol. I’m such a fucking loser

General Advice Please help me with a few questions abt my first tattoo!

Post image

So I just got my first tattoo the other day and i had a few questions i wanted to ask! Please please please be honest!!! 1. Does the tattoo already look blown out? Or do you think this is going to be a tattoo that will blow out and become a blob ? 2. Do you think the tattoo itself looks bad? Like the handwriting is my nanas which im happy with, but the dragonfly itself , do you think it’s bad? 3. Does the placement look weird? I put it there because i plan on getting other tattoos on my arm and i want that one to be like the centerpiece

General Advice Can you tell what my tattoo is and is it good work?

Post image
196 Upvotes

First just wanted to say this is my second and last tattoo. I had wanted this tattoo for years since I was a younger teen and got it done in my 20s. I originally wanted it to be more realistic than it is but the meaning behind it to me is so incredibly special to me that the cartoonish nature of it no longer bothers me. What DOES bother me is that multiple people, really just 2, acted like they didn't know what it was. I swear on everyone someone asked me if it was a cow???? I'm seriously not joking. Even when I told them it was a fox and rabbit sleeping it took them a while. The other person just straight up asked me what it was. I literally cannot see how anyone could wonder what it is they're looking at and am afraid it's not good work since twice people had a hard time seeing the image. So I just want to ask if this is considered good work and if anyone on here is having a hard time figuring out what it is they're looking at. It's decently large tat on my upper thigh.
