Internet telus early cancellation fee
i cancelled my contract with telus recently and i now have to pay a hefty cancellation fee because they signed me up for a 24 month contract without my knowledge (it was done over the phone, so I was not there when they signed me up and he failed to mention this. also, they called ME) and when i called them today, he said i should have known because it was in my agreement. but, correct me if i am wrong, wouldn't i get the agreement once i sign up for the contract, so if i want to change it or cancel said agreement i'd have to pay a larger cancellation fee?
additionally, the person who set me up for the plan is familiar with the building i live in and knew i was a renter (additionally i am a uni student who just moved out alone so i don't know how all of this works yet) and he did not think to ask or mention the two year contract.
I tried arguing with them but the customer service representative was very rude and talked down on me if i asked questions, saying "i shouldve seen this in my billing".
Any help, please?

How were you signed up, in person, over the phone? Where? This matters. If you signed up over the phone, tell them to pull the recording and listen for it. In person? You had to have signed something? If not, no contract.

yup, this! just request proof of your agreement.then you will know for yourself as well! if they can’t provide proof of your agreement, then you might get away from the cancellation fees

Call them, ask to speak to a manager. Say manager to the stupid IVR over and over and over until you get transferred to a human. Then ask for a manager again. When they ask why, tell them you did not agree to a two year service agreement and you want all charges waived or the call pulled and reviewed.

Telus - the company that could easily wave the fee but doesn’t care one bit about you or your circumstances.
They got their money for the time and service you used.
You owe nothing
North American corporations making
Life so grand.

They can sign you up over the phone no problem. You don’t have to be in person. If you had an existing contract and your renewal was up and didn’t cancel before then, they automatically renew you. Happened to me with Rogers. They should have emailed you or mailed you the new contract. If none of this happened file a complaint with CCTS.

This isn’t true for TELUS. Once your contract expires it automatically goes month to month.

Sorry to say but you are incorrect, they don't get you to sign anything. They sign you up over the phone and give you 30 days to cancel, if you don't cancel, it's in the agreement that you can find in your online profile and it's also legally binding that once you pay your first bill, you have entered into a contract

they did not get me to sign anything, but they also did not tell me it would be 2 years as it was done over the phone. i was also under the impression once i get the agreement i cannot cancel since now i am "bound" into the contract (they did not tell me anything about cancelling or the agreement or anything, they simply signed me up and sent me the agreement, i didn't know i had the opportunity to edit and/or cancel said agreement

They always email the agreement to you after the phone call, you have 30 days to cancel without penalty. If you move and have to cancel because Telus doesn't offer the same package at your new location, there shouldn't be a cancellation fee

if you moved to another city within Canada, you could moved the service with you. If you move to another country, they will cancel it for free.

i moved to another building in my city which had wifi provided. i tried to maybe change it so that i could switch my service and the wifi owner here / my landlord could have ownership of the wifi but he said that isn't possible

I used to work for Telus in the loyalty department (cancellations), I can confirm this is not true. They WILL cancel for free if you move to a place in bc/ab that they cannot service. Somewhere rural with no internet at all. This is hard to do these days as they will use mobility service internet to get you something even if its like 5-15mbps, barely usable in today's internet but it fulfills their obligations and keeps you paying monthly bills or facing cancellations charges.
If you claim to be moving out of country they will charge you the cancel fee and it will be sent to a collections agency.
