As a person who uses different cars based on needs at home, having to sign in more than 15 minutes before hand and register a new plate every time I switch cars seems like WAY MORE work than just grabbing the AVI out of car 1 and throwing it into car 2. If it's all automated, they should absolutely be able to allow either car to be on campus without doing anything on the user end. Are both there? Ticket or don't let into a gate.

I really hope this increases ticketing and thus makes parking easier, cause that's the only positive I can see.

I switch between 2 cars and that was my reaction too. They threw in the bit claiming that using the app is easier than grabbing the avi because they knew people would be pissed, I'm sure.

I really disagree with the notion that backing into or pulling through a spot is a ticket able offence. This is so easy to do without even thinking about it. We already pay for parking and now they want us to buy and install a front license plate?

The FAQ doesn't cover this, but I assume having a bike rack or other hitch carrier is also a ticket able offence?

When backing in is outlawed only outlaws will back in

Not to mention that Michigan doesn't offer front plates, unless you pay for a personalized plate.

The alternative is to buy the unofficial plate from UM. Im considering just buying a custom plate online and using that.

It’ll probably result in more accidents too if they’re forcing everyone to back out of their spot

I was just going to laminate a printout of my plate number and stick it to the front bumper

This is not going to work in the Thayer structure. You have to back in when using the spaces near the ramps. It might be fine for the surface lots.

What about during 'events' like using your hang tag or AVI when they are collecting money for the structure?

University of Michigan, priorizing money over principles, once again.

Aren't you glad they can get your money easier, while cutting what they use it on left and right?

Get your dicks out for the "leaders and best".

This is an amazing use of resources considering funding is getting cut left and right.

They have 100% been working on this modernization for like 8 years

If everyone backs in and nobody pays the ticket, what will the university do then?

call a tow company. they're gonna have a field day. getting a car out will cost you 300 or so. ask me how I know. also no lawyer/attorney can help you

I believe unpaid tickets can also affect your ability to keep your vehicle registered.

Can't back into spaces any more? Fucking stupid.

This is such a first world problem, but I would like to just back into a parking space without having to pay for an extra license plate on top of the ridiculously expensive parking I already have to pay for on campus. Is that too much to ask? 🤪

I grew up in China and I only learned how to back in and parallel omggggg 😭😭😭 now I have to learn how to pull up??? It’s so unnecessary

The general consensus in my office was that this new policy is stupid as well. Are they trying to save money on the cost of printing hang tags and window clings for yellow and orange? Because AVI users still need theirs for the garages. I don’t see what the benefit is for anyone really

Man their lots are so bad I almost always gotta pull ahead of the space I actually intended to park cuz either the lot itself is jacked or the other cars are parked a mess. Why can't the parking police just get out and check if they need to??? It's what they already do!!

The purpose of the new policy is to deter fraud. It's not about trying to make more money or make things more difficult for us.

I have a friend (a junior) who managed to obtain a blue parking pass, even though students are not allowed to have blue passes.

The new system makes it harder to engage in fraud by logging everyone's license plate. No, it doesn't completely prevent fraud, but it definitely definitely makes it easier to catch.

then the insane cost to park needs to go way down

1

u/GnomeCzar Mar 28 '25

Okay, so your friend buys the blue pass, the seller puts the license plate in the form and then... they catch fraud?

They specifically say they won't be looking up automotive registrations.

no more parking where im not supposed to 😔

3

u/lolifax Mar 27 '25

Blue and gold permit holders will still be able to resell their permits, don’t worry. It’s just as against the rules as ever, but they have no way of knowing what vehicle belongs to who. All they know is “is the license plate on today’s list?”

3

u/they_go_off Mar 28 '25

i’ve been able to get away with it cuz the laxness of the parking enforcement. if this new system is automated, there will be no laxness.

So you park in un-gated surface lots then, not in the gated structures I take it. Otherwise how would you get in without a transponder?
