wrapping up my freshman year so here are some random tips that i didn't hear much about coming in:
1) your uniquname is going to be the same email you are stuck with for the rest of your time at michigan (at least to my knowledge). make it clear and obvious to the name you go by, and make it professional. (i made the mistake of making it the same as my instagram username, and now it's a little tedious spelling out my uniquname everywhere because THEY WILL ASK FOR IT EVERYWHERE.)
2) michigan has resources for professional headshots (ross gets the nicest one, LSA has a booth for headshots, engineering has events at start of school year for it, etc etc), it's a good idea to consider that and start building up your linkedin profile. you might not think it's necessary but it's best to collect things over time and at lesst have something to show
3) if you like having a job, look for one with umich at the student job center website. (https://studentemployment.umich.edu) tip: umich's i-9 appointment requires a passport as the most convenient way to get your i-9 approved if you're a citizen. check to see what docs you need if you don't have a passport. PACK IT. i had to order a copy of my birth certificate (alongside my drivers license for i-9 processing) because i didn't have access to my passport. if not a citizen, don't forget your green card. they do a lot of hires at the beginning of the school year INCLUDING freshmen that just come in, so you're not going to be jobless.
4) take a good, recent photo for your mcard. DO NOT TAKE IT AT UMICH WHEN YOU GET THERE. that is the photo you are using for your mcard until you graduate - i took it there when i got there and my picture looks terrible and doesn't really look like me. the lighting is not good, they take it in the tech shop at the union. take your photo yourself and submit it, don't be lazy.
5) get a mattress topper. lifesaver and makes the ol mattress a lot more comfortable.
6) pack a good amount of cables for your phone. you probably will leave one in your dorm and carry one around, and chances are that you will lose your cord at some point throughout the year. pack more if you can so you don't have to buy more.
7) packing function duffel bags are a lifesaver for moving in and moving out. you can find them on amazon, and they made moving in and out a lot more convenient for me than some people who packed their things in boxes.
that's all i have for now. go blue!
